Best heartburn tablets/remedy

I suffer from heartburn quite a lot after having my gallbladder removed. Rennies don't seem to do much, and I hate chewing chalky tablets. I did find some tablets called Ranitidine in home bargains which were good, but they seem to have stopped stocking them now. Can anyone recommend anything else that works? Is the liquid gaviscon any good? Last Christmas I only had one glass of fizz with lunch and couldn't drink any more, or eat much either.

Sorry if this is a daft question but should I be binning all my ranitidine? I bulk buy it at costco. I only take one 75mg tablet a day before bed but cant sleep with just gaviscon. During the day I use gaviscon double action tablets. I used to need omeprazole but I managed to wean myself off after reading scary stories of stomach cancer in the future

Bicarbonate of soda. Works instantly. I get loads of heartburn and this is my go to remedy

Honestly I have found Superdrug heartburn tabs (fruit flavour) to be excellent (used to take Tums but the firm stopped making them). They are in a blue packet. They aren't chalky and taste nice! Similar ones were Boots own brand but they were crap! Yes the person mentioning the GP saying the stronger stuff ruins your tum is allegedly true because they halt the acid yet you need some acid to digest your food!!!!

Good old-fashioned Milk of Magnesia. Works instantly. Do not, whatever you do, resort to milk. It might give some short-term relief, but actually you are just exacerbating the problem.

Id also recommend bicarb of soda. Mix a teaspoon in a small amount of warm water and swallow it as fast as you can as it tastes horrible. After that you will probably do a few big burps and feel the relief :)

I'm on the Omeprazole bus! Amazing stuff - had this prescribed when I was pregnant and had terrible acid reflux. I think (not sure, I'm not a medical pro) that it's the same drug in Nexium, which someone has already mentioned and you can buy off the shelf.
