Best heartburn tablets/remedy

I suffer from heartburn quite a lot after having my gallbladder removed. Rennies don't seem to do much, and I hate chewing chalky tablets. I did find some tablets called Ranitidine in home bargains which were good, but they seem to have stopped stocking them now. Can anyone recommend anything else that works? Is the liquid gaviscon any good? Last Christmas I only had one glass of fizz with lunch and couldn't drink any more, or eat much either.

Ranitidine is what I was prescribed from the doctors but it did nothing to me.

The only thing I could have that worked was the gaviscon double action tablets and liquid

I’ve been really suffering the last couple of days. Never had any trouble before but this has coincided with a cough and a cold. I’ve just taken 2 gaviscon tablets and I feel better than I have all week!! Has anyone taken them long term or should it only be a now and again thing?

dementedpixie · 22/12/2019 16:02

Ranitidine has been recalled due to possible contamination with a carcinogenic substance. You won't find it anywhere at the moment.

Nexium is very good. I'm in Ireland but I would think you can get it over the counter in the UK as well.

HarrietThePi · 22/12/2019 16:08

They're still selling ranitidine in some discount shops - I've seen it in Savers. It's been mostly recalled as pp mentioned. Nexium is available here OTC, it's more expensive and takes longer to work because it works in a different way to ranitidine, but it does work.

I've recently been prescribed Omeprazole from Dr for a constant dry cough due to acid/reflux. It is great and saving me a small fortune in rennies and gavison advanced!

If it is a constant problem try your Dr. I found gavison advanced the best OTC tablet, although they stick in your teeth which is annoying.

I bought some Tesco's heartburn and indigestion liquid to take on holiday. Found it very effective and quick acting.

My Gp told me not to take anything like gaviscon, rennie, ranitidine. They destroy stomach acid she said
Instead take bicarbonate of soda in Water..
I’d also take digestive enzymes.cut back on fatty, sugary Dairy wheaty things
When stomach feels more settled..take a glass of warm water on a morning with a freshly squeezed lemon to alkalise the body

Layoverlife · 22/12/2019 17:39

Bicarb in some water, it tastes absolutely disgusting but works almost instantly!

Crystal87 · 22/12/2019 17:52

Liquid Gaviscon or the shops own brand were the only thing that helped me in my pregnancies.

ncge · 22/12/2019 17:53

Nexium or omeprazole

Troels · 22/12/2019 18:35

We like pepto bismol it's pink liquid and they sell it in Morrisons it's behind the counter at the pharmacy

CointreauVersial · 22/12/2019 18:36

Gaviscon liquid.

WakeyShakey · 22/12/2019 18:38

When I have heartburn I drink a small glass of ice cold milk. I find that to be the most effective remedy of all.

Wauden · 22/12/2019 18:40

A good probiotic tablet or two helps me a lot. I buy them at Holland and Barrett and the don't need to be kept in the fridge.

thiskiwicanfly · 22/12/2019 18:45

If you’ve had your gallbladder removed then it may be more gastritis than heartburn. And it bloody hurts! The only way I can manage an attack is with buscopan and some gaviscon liquid.

But ultimately, your gallbladder is helpful when you injest fat, so you’ll be more comfy keeping your diet pretty low fat. I find too much acidic food on an empty tummy does it to me too - so a glass of milk or piece of toast before an event does wonders.

All the best!

cut back on fatty, sugary Dairy wheaty things
That's my whole diet Blush

prisscalledwanda · 22/12/2019 19:51

Cold milk! Or even hot milk. Really effective. Getting me through this pregnancy.

Thanks all, I'd forgotten I had started this thread. Will try some of these suggestions. It hasn't been too bad this week, though I haven't really eaten or had that much to drink anyway

Omeprazole are good, I suffer from reflux, i always sounded like I had laryngitis but it was the reflux causing it. I also drink peppermint cordial & soda water which helps with indigestion, trapped wind & settles my stomach.

DragonMamma · 28/12/2019 11:39

I take lansoprazole from the GP but I’ve heard good things about Nexium, which you can get from a pharmacy.

diveolly · 28/12/2019 11:45

I've taken everything. Sad Nothing works. Apple cider vinegar sometimes helps a bit.

Going for an endoscopy in a couple of weeks as my brother is now dying from acid related complications (throat cancer) so they want to check what's going on with me.

Radardodgingninga · 28/12/2019 11:54

I went through a phase of awful heartburn that cleared up when I started eating live yoghurt. Apparently it increases the types of healthy bacteria in your gut so your digestion becomes more efficient. I ate it every day for a few months, now 2/3 times a week seems to be enough.

WombleOfTheThighs · 28/12/2019 12:06

I also have had my gallbladder removed and eat ranatidine by the handful (not really) and find them the best thing, but they've all recently been withdrawn because of possible contamination. I've tried the Nexium, which contains ezomeprazole, but you need to take it for 2 or 3 nights for it to work effectively and it's only for short-term use and I've not found it to make any difference. The Gaviscon double action I find works immediately, but doesn't last a whole night and it sticks in your teeth rather badly. I used to have omeprazole on prescription, so I'm thinking of asking to go back on that.

WombleOfTheThighs · 28/12/2019 12:07

Peppermint tea and other mint-related stuff is meant to be good, but I find it exacerbates my heartburn.
