How do I make my house smell nice?

I do try to keep my house tidy and clean (as possible with 2 kids, a husband and being 6 months pregnant) but it never has that lovely clean house smell that you notice when you go into other people's houses. I use candles, the occasional spritz of fabric freshener etc. But how do you make a house smell lovely?

Fresh air
Cloth soaked in some fabric conditioner between double radiators.
Spritz of febreeze in the kitchen if bad cooking smells
Sometimes some flash in the sink with plug in and some hot water

fedup21 · 21/12/2019 15:59

I have a lovely diffuser which gives off a really nice smell.

Biancadelrioisback · 21/12/2019 16:00

God I asked this on here once and apparently you just need to leave your windows open all the time and never use any candles, reed diffusers or air freshener.

Tbh I usually mix some zoflora with water in a spray bottle and spray soft furnishings

Zoflora very very dilute with water in a spray bottle can add a nice background smell. I wipe it on kitchen cupboards and doors etc occasionally.

wellthatwasthat · 21/12/2019 16:05

Spray your radiators with furniture polish Smile

And the window thing. Definitely open all the windows and air the house every morning for at least half an hour.

Cauliflowerpower · 21/12/2019 16:47

If I'm expecting anyone I put a bit of zoflora on a cloth and rub on radiators, light switches and round doorframes. Will sometimes light a scented candle too.

billy1966 · 21/12/2019 16:54

Open windows all over the house just clears the place out.

Good candles in the kitchen area that burn before and after cooking.

Not EVER using a deep fat fryer in the house.
IMO this smell never leaves a house.

Baking oily fish only.

But fresh air, every day is great. Even in winter.

I have an old house and through opening the windows every day, we have never had a hint of damp or mould.

I could do without a freezing cold house!

speakout · 21/12/2019 17:01

OPen windows.

Even just for half an hour.

I dislike synthetic fragrances. You can sent your house with orange or lemon peel placed on saucer on a radiator, use essential oils- gain I love the citrus ones, or I pring a pan or water to the boil with a handful of fresh herbs, rosemary, thyme, or use cinnamon and cloves.

TheSpottedZebra · 21/12/2019 17:02

You'll get a split between posters who think Zoflora smells like the nectar of the gods, and those who think it's cheap shite that honks to hell. I'm in the latter camp.

Just keep it the clean, air the house, change bed linen frequently and don't have big bins where rubbish piles up. And add candles/sprays if you wish, but they don't mask bad smalls.

Aaarrgghhh · 21/12/2019 17:06

Wax melts are something I use most days. But I’m a big believer in fresh air makes the house smell cleaner and feel cleaner. Also dusting helps. Even in winter I have windows open for some of the day or at the very least the vent above the windows will be open. Also, method floor cleaner is amazing and the smell even once dry lasts for ages. In fact all their cleaners are really nice and help the house smell great just from cleaning.

Sparklingbrook · 21/12/2019 17:09

I ahve a Molton Brown Reed Diffuser, they are expensive but they last for months. It's not a constant smell, just the odd waft.

I don't like air fresheners or sprays and although some flavours of Zoflora smell nice IMO they are a bit strong,

wondering7777 · 21/12/2019 17:10

I wanted to try this, but is it safe to have all those chemicals floating around? I have a cat and am worried that it could harm him.

@speakout does peel on a radiator really work? It sounds like a lovely natural way to do things!

Chapellass · 21/12/2019 17:11

Method lavender cleaner and method floor cleaner, not a lot of clutter so not a lot of dust / easy to clean, windows open a lot, no dog, all the teenagers' trainers kept in a cupboard!

Essential oils on a tissue between the radiator or in a diffuser - may chang, cedar wood, geranium

maddiemookins16mum · 21/12/2019 17:13

Wax melts here.

TW2013 · 21/12/2019 17:13

Washing curtains as well as bed linen helps.

funmummy48 · 21/12/2019 17:16

Filling the slow cooker with mulled wine and keeping it in low gives my house an amazing smell!😉

HisBetterHalf · 21/12/2019 17:29

Cook fish outside on the patio 😋

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 21/12/2019 17:55

I hate a perfumed house. Wash and clean and open the windows

Doilooklikeatourist · 21/12/2019 17:56

I’m with the open the windows brigade
Vase of fresh flowers
Bowl of oranges
Real Christmas tree

SquashedOrange · 21/12/2019 17:56

Wax melts (I'm completely obsessed with them!)

Open windows daily.

Wash cushions etc regularly.

HJWT · 21/12/2019 18:00

Bath & body works candles! They are the only candles I have used that actually make the smell go round the whole house

anon2000000000 · 21/12/2019 18:03

Essential oil diffuser.
