Do you, or anyone you know go to the gym on Christmas Day?

I’ve just noticed our gym is open until 1400 Christmas Day. I really can’t image who would go! Maybe those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but this gym is in an area which has little ethnic diversity, to the point that I don’t actually know anyone who doesn’t celebrate it. Maybe childless couples or single people, people with an exercise addiction? Or maybe people who get new trainers or plan to work off the calories they intend to consume.
I just can’t see enough people going to make it profitable.

"In what way is ethnicity relevant? Lots of non-white people celebrate xmas, lots of white people don’t celebrate xmas."

Ethnicity is not just skin colour. Your ethnicity does have a bearing on which festivals you celebrate. Most white British people do celebrate Christmas, even if they're not church goers so by stating that the area is not ethnically diverse the OP was saying that most people where she lives do celebrate Christmas.

parkrun is hugely popular on Christmas Day, so if you’re into gyming rather than running or walking, why not?

Parkrun I can sort of understand. It's sociable and sort of compares with going to church on Christmas day morning. Gym is quite different.

Gym is quite different.

How? I go to the gym three or four times a week. It's sociable, I tend to see the same people and we chat, it's nice.

How is going for a park run sociable and comparable to going to church, but going to the gym a sign of some kind of horrendous issue?

I'm not even a big lover of exercise. I rarely mention the gym. I go because it's good for my mental health, a nice break from technology and screens and I'm trying to lose weight and get in shape.

Op returning here! Gosh, this was a largely lighthearted thread, once again hijacked by people making PA comments. Nowhere in my post did I ever say there was anything wrong with going to the gym, or make derogatory remarks about those who go. Neither did I say I would spend the entire day on the sofa gobbling mince pies. I was simply surprised that enough people would visit to make to cost effective.
I even offered suggestions as to why people may go.
And for those who are wondering I will exercise on Christmas Day, but will do so with my family. I certainly won’t be spending the
Day in front of the telly. On Boxing Day we will cycle to the beach and those much braver than me will embrace the Boxing Day dip!

Ooh if I was single I definitely would. A lovely bit of self care followed by rest

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 14:01

If it was open I would go. I’m normally waiting outside on Boxing Day at 7am waiting for it to open.

MrsHardbroom · 21/12/2019 14:02

I went for a run last year. Bit over it now so doubtful for this year!

chillychicken · 21/12/2019 14:04

My gym is also closed. I’ll go tomorrow, Monday & Christmas Eve. I probably wouldn’t go Christmas Day though as I have young DC and DH would divorce me Grin

It’s also closed Boxing Day otherwise I’d go then. Instead I’ll go Friday, Saturday, Monday & New Year’s Eve. It’s closed NYD otherwise I’d go then too.

Not addicted but it’s the one time of the year I can get an extra session a week in. I’d have gone today had I not been awake most of the night.
