Do you, or anyone you know go to the gym on Christmas Day?

I’ve just noticed our gym is open until 1400 Christmas Day. I really can’t image who would go! Maybe those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but this gym is in an area which has little ethnic diversity, to the point that I don’t actually know anyone who doesn’t celebrate it. Maybe childless couples or single people, people with an exercise addiction? Or maybe people who get new trainers or plan to work off the calories they intend to consume.
I just can’t see enough people going to make it profitable.

I'm not a gym user but a regular Walker so.would get out for an hour or so walk. I think it's nice to have an hour to myself for my own thoughts. My mum loved christmas, she passed away 9 years ago so I just need that time to reflect without being around everyone else.

Stravapalava · 20/12/2019 22:20

I wouldn't, but I do sometimes run on Christmas Day.

northernstars · 20/12/2019 22:22

I did one year but I was on my own so it broke up the day a bit.

I have never been in a gym. Thinking of having a new gym habit if it gives me a 2 hour get out excuse for forced fun with the fookers!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/12/2019 22:32

I'll sometimes pop in first thing. I can't understand how people can stay at home all day without at least popping out for an hour. It's a great way to get the day started rather than sitting about stuffing my face all day.

Babybel90 · 20/12/2019 22:32

I wouldn’t go for the same reason I’d never go out to a pub or restaurant on Christmas Day, I don’t think anyone should have to work on Christmas Day unless it’s unavoidable like emergency services.

I know some people probably don’t mind working on Christmas Day, but I think a lot more people do mind but don’t have any choice, especially in low paid insecure jobs in hospitality.

IM0GEN · 20/12/2019 22:35

No but I go to parkrun.

FlamingoAndJohn · 20/12/2019 22:35

Dh did one year. His gym was 24/7. He went mainly because he could. Also it was just me and him in the morning, going to friends at 12 so he went to the gym and I had a bath.

Palavah · 20/12/2019 22:39

Not gym but I always go for a run (or work out inside if it's raining heavily)

  1. I'm on holiday
  2. I might not get outside otherwise
  3. I enjoy the food and drink much more after some fresh air and exercise

Everyone needs a rest day but 25/12 might not be the best one in the schedule. It's a shame people have to work it.

nutellalove · 20/12/2019 22:42

Mine is closed but if it were open I'd go in the morning pre lunch. Will workout at home instead.

Isawthathaggis · 20/12/2019 22:48

With many small children being given new bikes for Christmas I won’t get a moment to myself, which is as it should be.
But when they are older then I’ll be at the gym like a shot. Should only be about ten or twelve years.

Ellapaella · 20/12/2019 22:52

Not the gym but will probably go for a run at some point. I have to walk the dog anyway so she'll come with me.
I don't know anyone who would want to use the gym on Xmas day and I really think staff should be allowed the day off fffs.

666onmyhead · 20/12/2019 22:54

I will be in the gym Christmas Day, at least twice .... as the spare fridge is in there and we keep the booze in there over festive periods 😝

Blobby10 · 20/12/2019 23:00

Mine is a 24/7 one and I’ve been on the last five Christmas mornings- my usual gym time is 5am so I’ve been awake anyway, put the turkey in the oven and headed out for an hour before the teens awake 😁😁seemed a more useful use of my time than twiddling my thumbs waiting for them to wake up!! Last year two of my three kids (18 & 20) came with me 😁😁 as they were up anyway

DonttouchthatLarry · 20/12/2019 23:06

My gym is closed Christmas day and Boxing day - but we'll be going to parkrun on Christmas day.

Gingerkittykat · 20/12/2019 23:10

A lot of people struggle with the lack of routine and the fact everywhere is shut over Christmas, not everyone has a happy family to spend time with. Giving people a place to get away for an hour could be a very good thing. I know there are a lot of people (mostly middle aged and older men) who go to the gym/ pool and health suite daily and it is a major part of their lives and stops them from becoming isolated.

I've very grateful my leisure centre opens on the 26th.

LittleReindeer · 20/12/2019 23:11

How awful for the gym staff. Only people with essential jobs should be working. It’s not essential to go to the gym on Christmas Day.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/12/2019 23:12

"if exercise is something you truly enjoy "

I think that's the bit I'm struggling with! I enjoy some of it sometimes, but it always requires some self-discipline or effort to go there so why would I do that on the one day of the year when we are meant to REST and EAT TOO MUCH?

AdaFromYorkshire · 20/12/2019 23:30

No, but we will go for at least one walk and one adult DC will go for a run. Can't hear being inside all day. My mother was the same, she once did an hour's digging in the veg plot. She went out early to pick sprouts and just got carried away.

FlamingoAndJohn · 20/12/2019 23:34

DH’s gym is unstaffed. It’s open 24/7. No one has to work.

namechanged984630 · 20/12/2019 23:35

Childless couples. Lovely. Hmm

Expressedways · 20/12/2019 23:37

Our gym is open, including the crèche! I won’t be going but remember not everyone celebrates Christmas- if you’re Jewish for instance.

LittleReindeer · 20/12/2019 23:37

How can you have an unstaffed gym? Who locks up and how do they stop people just walking out with stuff?

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 21/12/2019 00:38

Unstaffed gym? What about health and safety?

SinglePringle · 21/12/2019 00:38

There are loads of unstaffed gyms. You need a pin to get in via the revolving / ‘pod’ doors and they have CCTV. The Gym Group is one such chain. Minimal staff during day. The earlier / latest I’ve been is 4am. No staff on site.
