Shark or Dyson?

GreyBird84 · 19/12/2019 08:50

2 adults 2 kids 1dog.
We seem to have to buy a new dyson cordless every couple of years!

I would prefer cordless because I find them so handy but I don’t want to shell out £200/£300 every couple of years. I use the hoover 4/5 times a day (not the whole house just wherever a mess has been made!).

Sorry OP, I don't have a Hoover opinion. My Dyson handheld is still going strong after at least five years, so...

GreyBird84 · 19/12/2019 09:05

It’s gets cleaned put, left to charge the correct amount of time etc....I think if just the amount of use it gets.

Dyson. Ive got cordless and corded and always had them. Find them really good

bobstersmum · 19/12/2019 09:07

Dyson have fantastic long warranty and aftercare if you ring them up they will even send an engineer to your house free of charge to fix them. Ring before your replace!

GreyBird84 · 19/12/2019 09:11

I swear it always happens about a month after warranty!!!

I've just gone from a Dyson V6 cordless to a Shark cordless (the top of the range anti allergen pet one, was on offer for £300 a few weeks ago). I've had 3 cordless Dysons, this is my first Shark. I'm actually undecided about which I prefer, they're both better at different things I think.

A few observations and my opinions, others may disagree :-

  • the Dyson is definitely more aesthetically pleasing.
  • the Shark seems better on carpets, the Dyson better on hard floors.
  • the flexology bending wand on the Shark is quite useful, but the Dyson head is lower overall so goes under low sofas easier.
  • the Shark just eats small rugs and mats which is annoying.
  • for car cleaning (we are a family of car enthusiasts) the Shark seems much more powerful as a handheld using the tools.
  • the Shark twin battery model is so much better then the Dyson if you're wanting to do a 'whole house clean'.
  • the Dyson gets into edges and corners slightly more than the Shark.
  • the Shark can't be used on our long haired wool rug, it just gets clogged up. So not sure how it would cope if you have long haired animals?
  • Shark is a bit better value for money I would say.
  • I've contacted Shark customer services last week due to a blockage I couldn't locate. American call centre, really helpful, sorted in 10 mins. Dyson was a UK call centre the last time I called about a year ago, also really helpful.
  • Shark has a 5 year warranty, the last Dyson I bought was a 1 year warranty.

These are just things that I've noticed and thought of when I was deciding which to get.

Hope it helps xx

Following, desperately need to replace my old Henry but can’t decide

SpamChaudFroid · 19/12/2019 09:26

I love my Shark. I've never had a Dyson, so can't compare. It replaced a Miele, which was the worst vacuum I've ever used.

bobstersmum · 19/12/2019 09:28

Op they have a five year warranty!

bobstersmum · 19/12/2019 09:32

All brand new dysons have a 5 year warranty that you don't have to activate , they just know when it was bought and it starts from then. My flex hose was broken for a year and I put up with it as I'd had the Dyson over 3 years. A friend told me to ring up and I did. Since then I've had 2 free replacement parts sent and an engineer has been and fixed a problem and also gave it a little service, all for free. Nearly 5 years old now. I won't hesitate to buy another.

ISmellBabies · 19/12/2019 09:34

Shark. Mine is brilliant. I bought it a few months after I bought a fucking dyson which stopped working properly after about 5 minutes' use, crappy thing.

DidgeDoolittle · 19/12/2019 09:43

Shark, I absolutely love mine. I have a cat and a dog, the Shark copes with their mess no problem.

sirfredfredgeorge · 19/12/2019 09:50

Dyson's are shit, no idea about Sharks though.

GreyBird84 · 19/12/2019 13:07

Ahhhh. I needed a clear verdict 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've just got a new corded Shark after having a corded Dyson. No comparison - the Shark is brilliant - I do still have my cordless Dyson though for quick jobs.

Sallycinammonbangsthedruminthe · 19/12/2019 16:26

Shark...best investment I ever made! It is amazing...

lisag1969 · 19/12/2019 16:31

Dyson definitely. I'm a bit of a hoover freak. Have had lots of hoovers over the years. Dyson 100%. My sons says they are going to write on my epitaph "she loved to hoover". X

ReginaGeorgeous · 19/12/2019 16:48

Shark, definitely. I used to have a Dyson, it's not a patch on my shark.

Greenvalleymama · 19/12/2019 17:47

I've always had Dyson and still use my cordless for a light hoover but the suction on my corded Shark is amazing. It picks up twice as much as the Dyson would in the same time. I got it in the Black Friday sale for £139, total bargain.

Gertie75 · 19/12/2019 17:50

After 5 Dysons I switched to Shark (we have 4 dogs) and will never switch back.

edgewater · 19/12/2019 17:55

I’d never buy a dyson again. I’lol go shark after my Miele dies.

Winkywoop · 19/12/2019 17:57

Shark

OhDear2200 · 19/12/2019 17:59

Shark! Love it. Best vacuum. I hate bloody Dyson’s most overrated product ever

Aurea · 19/12/2019 18:04

I have both a Dyson V8 and a Shark Duoclean. I use the Dyson on hard floors and the Shark on carpets. I like both, but if I had to choose, I would opt for the Dyson for its ease of use.
