Does this need a Dr (picture of cut/graze)

I'm super clumsy and cut/grazed my hand on Saturday.

It bled a bit, I cleaned it up and stuck a plaster over it. Due to work I've been changing the plaster fairly regularly and letting air at it when I'm home but tonight it looks a bit angry and it's really throbbing.

It's dry, a tiny bit warmer than the rest of my hand but it looks really red around the cut which has
Spread a bit (line is where the plaster came to and where the redness was at lunchtime)

I think it's fine and just to keep it clean and keep an eye on it.

DH thinks I should be phoning the dr as soon as it opens or my thumb is going to fall off.

I'd soak it in hot salty water, dry it off, draw round it and review in the morning

MrsIronfoundersson · 17/12/2019 23:36

Have you got any germolene or sudocrem? They're perfect for that kind of thing. Hope it feels better soon.

clumsyAF · 17/12/2019 23:45

I washed it with diluted dettol ( I don't have any other antiseptic) and I've put a dressing back over it. It's only just covers the red area so I'll be able to see if it's got worse or not in the morning.

DH is freaking out and thinks I should be phoning NHS24. I have absolutely no intention of doing anything tonight unless it get significantly worse/wakes me up

Soaking in hot salty water regularly should help, keep track of where the redness is. You won’t die overnight!

christma5 · 17/12/2019 23:48

I stubbed my toe once and it obviously pushed my nail into the skin awkwardly. Fast forward a day and it was agony, swollen and red. Had to get antibiotics. So in my experience minor things can require treatment but I'm sure you'll be fine to wait for tomorrow.

ofwarren · 17/12/2019 23:48

I wouldn’t be going to the doctors with that at this point.

olympicsrock · 17/12/2019 23:48

I’m a doctor with experience in this area . Looks like you have cellulitis. Infection in the hand can spread very quickly and cause major problems. Go to A and E in the next 12 hours and get some antibiotics.

cultmaskid · 17/12/2019 23:49

I would say it could also be bruised and inflamed
However draw around the red tonight if it's moved or you feel nauseas and sweaty or hot then call ooh doc

Or it it's bigger tomorrow show gp

What did you cut it on was it dirty

olympicsrock · 17/12/2019 23:49

Would suggest you head in around 6/7 am - usually quiet at this time

clumsyAF · 17/12/2019 23:50

@TheJoxter well I might but it will have nothing to do with my scabby hand Grin

theflushedzebra · 17/12/2019 23:51

I wouldn't contact a doctor for that, but I feel your pan, grazes like that can really smart.

TCP/savlon/salt water will all be fine.

shoebedobedobedobedoo · 17/12/2019 23:51

Another A&E doc here. It’s cellulitis and you need antiobiotics. Going to A&E in the morning will be fine as long as you don’t get a temperature in the night- in which case go overnight

Teensruletheroost · 17/12/2019 23:52

Listen to the dr on the thread and get it seen. Having also had cellulitis it can be very painful.

clumsyAF · 17/12/2019 23:55

I cut it on a paint tin, it was fairly clean despite being in the shed for almost a year. I did give it a good wash with soapy water too.

I'll keep an eye on it and if it's still as red in the morning or looks to be getting worse I'll get it looked at.
Hopefully it dies down overnight and I can say told you so to DH in the morning

gamerchick · 18/12/2019 00:00

There are 2 doctors apparently on this thread saying exactly the same thing OP. Get it looked at when you can.

And sort a first aid kit out while you're on.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 18/12/2019 00:05

I had a large patch of cellulitis which took very strong antibiotics to clear. The hospital told me that this infection can become very serious, best not to mess about with it.

anxioussue · 18/12/2019 00:09

see the pharmacist in the morning?

VenusTiger · 18/12/2019 00:12

@clumsyAF was the paint tin metal? Was it rusty?

AlaskaElfForGin · 18/12/2019 00:14

It looks very much like cellulitis OP, you need to see docs first thing for an antibiotic. Don't mess about waiting for it to get better on it's own because it won't.

Helpfullilly · 18/12/2019 00:16

It is potentially infected, as stated by two doctors already. If it is infected and not treated quickly the infection could spread and cause serious complications, including death.

Definitely get it checked out ASAP.

clumsyAF · 18/12/2019 00:21

@VenusTiger no, plastic.

Thank you for all the advice, I'll definitely take heed and get it looked at. I've got up, washed it again, drawn round the red and redressed it. It doesn't seem to have spread any further, least now I'll be able to show the GP or nurse if it spreads.

olympicsrock · 18/12/2019 00:21

OP - I spent last night draining pus from the tendon sheaths of a foot that started as a small area of cellulitis and spread like wildfire in 24 hours. My patient will be in hospital for weeks. You’ve had advice from a surgeon and ED doctor, maybe listen to us....

olympicsrock · 18/12/2019 00:24

Cross post but honestly just go to ED first thing

clumsyAF · 18/12/2019 00:29

@olympicsrock wow, that sounds grim. I will definitely be seeking medical advice/attention first thing, I do not want to be like your patient!

OP posts:
teentree · 18/12/2019 00:57

Go to A and E in the next 12 hours and get some antibiotics.

Going to A&E in the morning will be fine

Can the doctors explain why A&E in the morning/within 12 hours?

Surely the GP in the morning rather then A&E if it's a simple case of anti booties needed?
