When do you get the Christmas chocolates/ sweets out? And which ones do you have?

I was going to do it yesterday but there was a lot of birthday cake about and none of us needed anymore chocolate. Next weekend we are away so maybe the 23rd would be a good time? That way they'll last. I've got Quality Street (a childhood favourite-they smell of Christmas-even if they aren't as nice now), some M&S ones in a tub and some heroes in a tub. There's after 8s, M&S peppermint creams and sticks and cherry liqueurs, chocolate biscuits and matchmakers. Oh and some Montezumas buttons and possible some chocolonely. I've been stashing for some time Grin

I've not tried any of the M&S ones before so I'm hoping they are nice. I find the thought of chocolates better than the actual chocolate these days as it's all gone downhill so much. Maybe I'll just sniff the quality street instead of eating them and admire the shiny wrappers.

We had a metal tin of quality street - they were opened on 3rd December and have gone. Now on the big metal tin of Roses.

There is a tin of Heroes hidden upstairs that won't come out until Christmas Eve at the earliest.

BennyTheBall · 16/12/2019 22:13

We may be odd, but we don't! Even though it was a part of both our childhoods - we have never bought chocolates to have. Possibly as a result, our kids are not interested in chocolate or sweets.

A visitor brought a big tin of Quality Street yesterday and I took it in to work today as it just wouldn't get eaten here.

Christmas Eve.

Haven't bought that much this year, as on tight budget. But bought a couple of chocolate boxes eg roses (not tubs). Box of biscuits and some crisp type snacks.

My stbex has very sweet tooth and used to buy loads when we were together. We were still eating them in March.

Igottastartthinkingbee · 16/12/2019 22:31

I had no idea this was a thing! People buy themselves massive tubs of chocolates??? I always thought Christmas chocs were acquired as a gift.

MarySidney · 16/12/2019 22:35

Quality Street come out for the Queen's Christmas message at 3pm in my family - tradition since we were children. Though my Mum confessed to me on the phone yesterday that she's already eaten half the box she bought!

MrsWooster · 16/12/2019 22:35

Tonight, by a happy coincidence! Bendicks bittermints. Starting out classy, tho I’ll be safe down in the Quality Street by Christmas Eve.

MrsWooster · 16/12/2019 22:36

*face down.

AuntieMarys · 16/12/2019 22:39

I am off to the Lindt shop on Friday to buy £20 worth of pick and mix.
No other chocolate ( 3 of us)

Bloodybridget · 16/12/2019 22:42

@MrsWooster love that face down in the Quality Street Grin!

Chocolatecake12 · 16/12/2019 22:43

Started mine on Saturday!! It was ds’s birthday weekend so a tub of celebrations always get opened!
Oh and I might have secretly scoffed a packet of Lidl’s mini stollen......

cobwebsoncornices · 16/12/2019 22:46

What I'm interested in is how you manage the eating of them by the DC. I can't let mine (upper primary) just eat them as they wish as they'll all be gone within about 10 minutes of being opened. So we have endless whining and negotiation around when they can have another one.

GreekOddess · 16/12/2019 22:48

We bring them out when we finish work which will be the evening of the 23rd December.

As a child they came out after present opening on Christmas Day. I can still remember the excitement of helping to carry the Christmas goodies into the living room!

Douberry · 16/12/2019 22:50

I never knew until i came on Mumsnet that people actually buy these for themselves. I always thought the tubs and tins were in shops for us to buy for other people

Same here!

Now instead of waiting to see what we'll get and never getting around to opening anything until after Christmas, I'm just going to buy whatever I like then eat the lot with gay abandonGrin

DH has promised a mince pie blind taste test which I am so looking forward toXmas Shock

FightForYourRightToPourTea · 16/12/2019 22:56

Waitrose lebkuchen selection. I buy as many boxes as I can when I first see them in stock as they disappear quickly. Have already eaten a box and a half with dh in the evenings.

I used to be strict about Christmas stuff only being eaten at Christmas but since we had dc I'll take any treat I can get!

Wouldn't buy myself a box of Quality st etc though. Got v young dc.

My 3 are grown up now but from memory, we'd let them choose 2 or 3 after lunch and dinner. Christmas day they could have more but obviously we kept an eye, so they didn't make themselves sick or have them too near to meal times.

Thehagonthehillwithtinsel · 16/12/2019 23:08

We never had chocolates bought either. We got some as presents and when I was a child those selection stockings were given as pressies too.
My brother's wife buys the big tub of quality street for their family but is the first not one.
As a resulty DD sees them as real treat even at 16.

nancy75 · 16/12/2019 23:12

My name is Nancy & I’m addicted to walnut whips
I’ve eaten all the ones I’ve bought for Christmas already & need to go out tomorrow to buy some more Xmas Blush

PrettyPurpleFeather · 17/12/2019 05:44

If you're sick of the sight of them by new year's day then donate them to the food bank instead of throwing them in the bin.

shoofly · 17/12/2019 11:39

I bought a tub of celebrations and a tub of heroes. Took the Heroes with me to the election count on Thursday night/Friday morning along with a bug box Tunnocks teacakes. Noone even looked at the teacakes, so they're still sitting in a Tesco bag in the hall. I left the heroes at the count when I came home at 4:30am, they were well received. DS2 was horrified I took them, so I replaced them this morning. Kids finish school on Friday and DH home from working away so they'll be opened over the weekend

reluctantbrit · 17/12/2019 12:24

We have christmas chocolate like lindt teddy/santa etc and all kind of tree decoration chocolate from Lidl, they come out on the 24th.

During December it is more biscuit time, lots of baking and eating.

Quality Street and the other tubs are not Christmassy for me (OK, I am from a non-UK country) and I can't understand the excitement of chocolates you can buy all year round anyway.

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 17/12/2019 12:56

I can't remember when we got them out when I was a child, they were just a part of Christmas. I'll see if mum remembers.

My parents were teachers, so for me christmas always involved many many boxes of quality street and roses! I now live in the US and begin searching for a tin of one or the other around November.

Managed to find a tin of quality street early this year, and planned to not open it till the weekend before christmas... but we cracked a couple of days ago. It is now almost empty just the gross yellow caramel ones left Grin

Tbh, they seem to not taste as good as they used to. Still better than US chocolate, but only just. I'd love recommendations. What's your favourite selection box, that I might be able to get shipped to the US?

EllaEllaE · 17/12/2019 15:10

Tunnocks teacakes!! Omg that's what I should get. And I think I know where I can buy those....

Taddda · 17/12/2019 15:15

Mine have been out since 2017....
