When do people send Christmas cards

whatsyaname · 16/12/2019 18:57

I posted the majority of my cards 2nd class on Saturday, so I guess they will arrive to people Wednesday. But I only have received 2 cards so far. I feel I was really late on doing these. I have a massive family and I always send cards to family and close friends.

Is it the thing to only send to people that send to you ? I love a nice Christmas card.

Thats not how I do it, but I guess it depends on the persons outlook your sending too

halcyondays · 16/12/2019 19:01

ones people send to us arrive any time between the beginning of December and Christmas Eve

wondering7777 · 16/12/2019 19:12

I always aim to have them sealed and sent by around the 10th. In reality I normally frantically scribble them a few days before Christmas Day and hope they arrive before the 25th. Some years they’ve been known to arrive afterwards Blush

I’m only sending one to my DM this year, each year I’ve cut down and decided this is the year to stop them altogether (apart from my DM).

Ninkanink · 16/12/2019 19:14

We sent ours yesterday (UK) and today (Overseas). We only do a handful these days - basically any close family members that are older than me, plus one or two very good friends.

fruityconfusedhotdog · 16/12/2019 19:17

Beginning of the month here. I'm trying to cut down the number I sent but then revived some from people I hadn't sent to so had to do some more!

Nicolastuffedone · 16/12/2019 19:28

Had a cull this year. Only family and a couple of friends. I’ve not received many either this year, which I’m actually pleased about....I don’t like the clutter.

Kittykatmacbill · 16/12/2019 19:41

I put mine in the post today. I am so sad everyone has cut down on them, I love them especially when you have tonnes (like my parents did), now down to 30 ish. Kinda the real bit of Christmas thinking of others...

MissCalamity · 16/12/2019 19:55

I've done all the family ones but not started on any others as yet.
We probably have about 20 Christmas cards unopened, which I will probably open tomorrow & sort (It was DS's birthday yesterday so want to make sure all his birthday cards have pride of place first!)

I've stopped doing cards at work & people who we've not received one from on the previous year. Xmas Confused

I would personally stop them completely, but I've got to say the house does look bare without them!

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 16/12/2019 20:00

I sent mine (10) today. Mostly to elderly relatives who we won't see and who I know will appreciate them.
I'm sad that it's a tradition that seems to have died out

carlywurly · 16/12/2019 20:42

I used to send around 75 a year, I'm down to about 30 and have received about 20 so far. Lots of friends have donated to charity instead. I think we'll do the same next year, other than for older family members.

Thinking about it, I suppose sending cards is really quite an expensive, time consuming and ultimately wasteful thing to do, nice though it is to receive them.

ASqueakingInTheShrubbery · 16/12/2019 20:51

I've sent about 80 and received about 30 so far. I try and get them out in the first week of December so that I'm not panicking for the overseas last posting dates or suddenly realising too late that Aunty Doris will expect a photo of DD and there's no ink in the printer. I still need to do work people and drop off one to a friend of my late Dad, who I try and 'conveniently catch' every Christmas just to make sure he's still alive. I love them. My mum (70s) has strings upon strings of them all around the living room. My generation just don't seem to do them as much.

Sparklingbrook · 16/12/2019 20:52

I send about ten. Mostly elderly aunts and uncles who might be upset not to receive one.
I don't really care if I get cards or not. i have nowhere really to put them.

BlueJava · 16/12/2019 20:53

I have really cut down and only sent 2 - one to DP's distant elderly relative that is so lovely and I've just kept in touch with her and the other to our next door neighbour. That's it - it's got expensive to be honest.

PureAlchemy · 16/12/2019 20:53

We’ve received loads over the last few days

lifeisgoodagain · 16/12/2019 21:12

I don't send them, I send texts/messages

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/12/2019 22:09

Never.

RoseMartha · 16/12/2019 22:17

Depends I usually send second week. Sent them a bit earlier this year although sent my abroad ones a bit late.

Since split up with H have over halved the amount I send now too.

Redpriestandmozart · 16/12/2019 22:22

Our family and friends must think we are loaded this year, Tesco sent us 1st class stamps in place of 2nd!! I like to write first Saturday in December and post on the Monday.

CustomerCervixDepartment · 16/12/2019 22:26

What are they for? You buy some tat, write ‘to blah, love from blah’ or maybe even a ‘to blah, best wishes from blah’ and the tat enters someone s house who might display it before it goes into landfill or ‘recycling’. Show someone you’re thinking of them by actually bothering with them? I don’t understand the point of cards.

DappledThings · 16/12/2019 22:37

Mine are going in the post tomorrow. About 50 of them I think

Tigresswoods · 16/12/2019 22:41

I cut down 2 Christmases ago. Last year I sent a few. This year I've been brutal & we're down to bare minimum.

It's a shame but I was spending over £50 on postage alone & it was just a job I could do without.

I feel a bit bad but as a PP said it's expensive, time consuming & ultimately wasteful.

ChippingIn · 16/12/2019 22:46

I love getting them. It’s not Christmas without them. It’s a bit silly saying you’re sad it’s dying out but only sending a few yourself. If you like the tradition then get writing them!

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to send as many this year as I wasn’t organised enough before coming away and when I get back it’ll be too late. But I’ll be back into it next year

@whatsyaname my observation is that when I send them in good time I receive a lot, when I send them late, I don’t get anywhere near as many 😂 so obviously lots of people just send them as they receive them from people.

Mind you, it’s hardly surprising given the virtue signalling if so many about donating to charity instead of damaging the environment 🙄. There are more effective things you can do than not send a lovely Christmas wish to someone IMO.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/12/2019 22:46

I don't mind not getting them but was a bit worried I'd suddenly peed off everyone I knew this year as we've hardly had any. I'm relieved to read this thread.

MarySidney · 16/12/2019 22:50

Posted mine on the way to vote on Thursday. I've been getting one or two at a time since early last week, but still have a lot to come.

I always get one from someone I haven't expected to get one from when it's too late to reciprocate.
