Wwyd: holiday accommodation issue

Just arrived, after a long journey, to our holiday let in an amazing place. Two children, extremely tired, now asleep (we're in Asia). The villa is 3 bedrooms. We were prepared to not use one, as the kids can get a bit anxious in a new place, so probably best in the same room. However, all of the rooms lead to the outside, with only one exit each and the only lock is a key. Tonight we're going to move one child into another bedroom and each sleep with one child. I can't not lock any doors - we're in an unknown country and anyone could get over the wall and into the garden.

I've checked the listing and it doesn't mention this setup at all. It's listed as suitable for families.

Also, the listing has breakfast provided. Apparently it is not provided. We chose it over other properties because we didn't want the hassle of finding breakfast each morning.

I'm tempted to see if we can cancel for the rest of our stay tomorrow. DH has notions of moving a mattress onto a floor and us all being in one room. But I've paid for an amazing villa holiday! What should we do?

Have you booked direct or via a tour operator, etc? The breakfast included is contractual if listed and the security arrangements they may try to argue are locally acceptable, but I'd try to find somewhere else given that set up.

wowfudge · 16/12/2019 15:50

If you're in a villa btw, you'll have a fridge, etc and just need to shop and prepare breakfast rather than going out though?

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 16/12/2019 15:53

I assume you're worried about the children getting out or someone getting in? If the doors open inwards can you move furniture across the door? Maybe a chest of drawers? Is the outside securable? Is there a gate etc?

Do you have proof that you booked with breakfast included?

It's through air b n b. Yes there's a fridge and we can get over the breakfast issue. Rather not though. We contacted the owner about breakfast and now the listing has been changed (we did send a screenshot). It's the security I can't cope with. The kids fell asleep so they can't pick themselves in. I'm not happy locking them in and keeping the key with me - we'd have to lock them in, go through kitchen, could lock that or not, go through garden and into the next room. I

Have you had a look online for any suitable alternative accommodation?

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 15:56

I'm mostly concerned about strangers getting in, but also concerned about dc1 waking and being scared (a real worrier). That would apply if we locked them in (which I'm not prepared to do for fire reasons) or not.

I don't understand the layout. Are the rooms all off a courtyard?

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 15:58

There's a locked gate. Walls are about 2m high so really unlikely anyone would enter. But not a risk I'm prepared to take. Plus I just wouldn't sleep.

How old are the DC? Can you add a diagram?

caperplips · 16/12/2019 15:59

I can't picture the set up! Are you saying there are 3 bedrooms with only one door each which leads to the garden so no internal doors? So to get from the bedroom to the kitchen you would have to go outside and back in again to the kitchen?

Or does each room have an internal connecting door AND a door to the garden?

How did you not spot this on the pictures of the rooms???

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 16:00

Ok so layout:

Gate, leading to pool/garden. Stairs up to one bedroom. Door to kitchen, which leads into another bedroom. Then outside again, another door to another bedroom.

OP posts:
CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 16:01

No internal connecting doors. I wish I could do a diagram but on phone, not sure how.

Draw a diagram, photograph it and then upload it.

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 16:02

Pics of the rooms just look like pics of rooms, no layout in the listing. Did know one was upstairs though, so knew we might not use that one.

BooksAreMyOnlyFriends · 16/12/2019 16:04

That's a really odd set up. So if you're in one of those rooms you gave to unlock the doors and go outside to the bathroom? Presumably lock the door behind you and take the key.
Absolutely not family friendly!

caperplips · 16/12/2019 16:06

does the gate lock? How secure is the outside area?

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 16:07

All rooms en suite. Crappy diagram coming

Gate is padlocked. Not sure re safety of area, we arrived in the dark. It's midnight here. Fairly quiet, dark road from main road.

Where are you?

CobbleDePook · 16/12/2019 16:14

Bali

Did the diagram work?

It sounds typical of the area. It is suitable for families, not everyone has tiny kids remember. I've stayed in places where they were on a different floor of the hotel once they were young teens - we were still a family! The breakfast thing is not fair though

Griffalo123 · 16/12/2019 16:21

I wouldn’t like that at all and would probably do as your DH suggests if there’s no option to move. No way would I leave the door unlocked and I also wouldn’t lock them in. It wouldn’t make any difference how safe or unsafe the area is deemed to be, I just don’t think it’s worth risking.

Hopefully you’ll be able to enjoy your holiday as much as possible nonetheless. If you can’t move, accept the mattress situation and try and see it as more of an opportunity to bond (easier said than done and I would be livid at first that this wasn’t explained more clearly).

It’s raining and cold where I am if that helps in any way!

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/12/2019 16:22

That is a horrible layout! I'd be really pissed off if it were me. It looks as if all you can do is all sleep in the room off the kitchen, but then like you say, what's the point of booking a villa?

What did they say about breakfast when you contacted them? Did you send them your screenshot?
