Wwyd: holiday accommodation issue

Just arrived, after a long journey, to our holiday let in an amazing place. Two children, extremely tired, now asleep (we're in Asia). The villa is 3 bedrooms. We were prepared to not use one, as the kids can get a bit anxious in a new place, so probably best in the same room. However, all of the rooms lead to the outside, with only one exit each and the only lock is a key. Tonight we're going to move one child into another bedroom and each sleep with one child. I can't not lock any doors - we're in an unknown country and anyone could get over the wall and into the garden.

I've checked the listing and it doesn't mention this setup at all. It's listed as suitable for families.

Also, the listing has breakfast provided. Apparently it is not provided. We chose it over other properties because we didn't want the hassle of finding breakfast each morning.

I'm tempted to see if we can cancel for the rest of our stay tomorrow. DH has notions of moving a mattress onto a floor and us all being in one room. But I've paid for an amazing villa holiday! What should we do?

Your only options are stay and make the most of it it try and cancel as rebook more suitable family accommodation. Sleep on it tonight and see what you want to do tomorrow.

I'd definitely complain to Airbnb about the breakfast issue and I'd mention the security issue, though not sure they will consider it to be one. You should not have to pay full price if your breakfast isn't included, when you initially had it included in the booking.

Contact air bnb right now. Their offices in Ireland will still be open at 1700 Uk time.

They will be help you find other accommodation if the property has been incorrectly listed .

Totally get that it is likely to be fine. It's the fact that doors won't lock or unlock without the key even from the inside that is stopping me from just getting on with it. Lock them in - fire hazard. Wake them and get them to lock themselves in - fire hazard. Don't lock any doors apart from the gate padlock - unknown risk.

I'd be uncomfortable with that layout even with my teen. At 8 and 10 I would be very unhappy. Who are these husbands who never want to complain, I'd be complaining about 'family-friendly' and the lack of breakfast.

I would call Airbnb and explain. I've always found them to be very helpful. They are generally very willing to cancel a booking and refund. The only thing is they won't assist you with rebooking, and at such short notice it might be slim pickings and/or much more expensive somewhere else, so I would check that out first. We have had to get a refund twice (once because we just couldn't get hold of the owner less than 24 hours before we were due to arrive and hadn't received an address or any instructions, once because the apartment was absolutely filthy), and they were very helpful both times.

We're going to go to sleep now and reassess in the morning. It's such a lovely villa, just a stupid layout. If they were locks that you could press to lock from the inside, that would be ok I think.
