Starsky and Hutch - any fans?

Ds has given me an early Christmas present of the first series of Starsky and Hutch. It’s fascinating watching it for the first time in a million years. Amazingly progressive about male friendships and race- breathtakingly unprogressive about women. Except for an episode about women refusing to testify against a rapist- the issue was addressed- but solved by shooting the rapist.

First single I ever bought was "Don't give up on us baby" by David Soul. I had a total crush on him, but to be honest I did give up on him as soon as Gary Numan came along Grin.

Oh, I was a Starsky woman!

I was Starsky woman too, remember his cardigan?

I’ve been admiring it anew this very morning!

Starsky was my first ever crush.

I remember being so sad when his wife and daughter died from AIDS.

BertrandRussell · 16/12/2019 14:40

Sadly, Paul Michael Glaser was on breakfast telly recently and, while still very good looking, was obviously a bit of a creep. Sad

BertrandRussell. I’m sad to hear that. What kind of creepiness?

BertrandRussell · 17/12/2019 08:51

He treated Holly the way Starsky would have in the programme- too touchy and “flirty”. Very ick. Sad

That's a shame. He had a very sad personal life, with his first wife and little son dying. Not that it's any excuse.

SaskiaRembrandt · 17/12/2019 09:49

I liked David Soul too* - he's also really good in Salem's Lot.

*Disclaimer - I fully expect someone to come along and tell me he does weird things with artichokes, or something equally unsavoury.

Sorry. 6 marriages and domestic violence.......

BertrandRussell. Remember his song, Don’t Give Up On Us, Baby?
I get shivers thinking about his abusive behaviour whenever I think about the words.

SaskiaRembrandt · 17/12/2019 13:32

Sorry. 6 marriages and domestic violence....... I knew there'd be something. And that's bad even by the low standards of the day.

Yes, it does cast that song in a very different light.

PickwickThePlockingDodo · 17/12/2019 13:35

Ooh I loved Starsky and Hutch when I was a kid. I liked Starksy the best and my DSis liked Hutch, she even had a poster of him on her wall that she used to kiss each night
Anyone else have a cool 70s jumpsuit with their faces on? Grin
Urgh the domestic violence puts a downer on it though Sad

BertrandRussell · 17/12/2019 13:58

I’m now looking for more episodes on YouTube. Surprisingly Grin the ones that are there seem to be the most homo-erotic ones!

To be fair to Davis Soul- he was very open about his failings and the treatment he sought.....But still Hmm

I’m still interested, amongst the fandom in how progressive the show was in some ways for the time. Lots of black characters who were there to be characters and whose colour was irrelevant. So long as they were men of course. Women, regardless of colour, are largely stereotypes.

OMG this takes me back. I still want one of those cars Grin

Yes, as a kid I used to love Huggy Bear although googling him now he looks like some kind of pimp/drug dealer type character Confused

BertrandRussell · 17/12/2019 16:12

I think Huggy was a wheeler dealer- but with 70s sensibilities. They all had rather a liberal feminist approach to sex work!
In the one I just watched, Huggy says to Hutch “if you were any cooler you’d be black”

I have a Starsky cardigan. Because of this series!

PuddleglumtheMarshWiggle · 17/12/2019 18:03

I was a big Starsky fan. Had pictures all over my bedroom walls. Saturday night TV in the 70s started with Dr Who and ended with Starsky and Hutch.
I met Paul Michael Glaser a few years back when he was in Fiddled on the Roof. An amazing performance but he didn't say a word when signing autographs. He did sign my Starsky and Hutch annual, as well as the theatre programme 😁

bellinisurge · 17/12/2019 18:11

He was in the film of Fiddler on the Roof as one of the young suitors of one of the daughters. And then in it more recently as Tevye.

charley50 · 17/12/2019 18:12

I was a massive Starsky fan too, and was allowed to stay up late to watch the programme. Had posters of him on my walls. Then along come Bodie, I joined the (real) Professionals fan club, and added him to my poster collection.

CoolCarrie · 17/12/2019 23:53

Oh Bodie was lovely, had a huge poster of Lewis Collins on my wall, I was very sad when he died. I liked him in Cuckoo Waltz as well.

Butchyrestingface · 18/12/2019 06:19

That's a shame. He had a very sad personal life, with his first wife and little son dying

It was his wife and daughter who died. His boy is alive and well and now well into his 30s, albeit HIV positive, but it has never developed.

Shame that PMG was creepy. Sad

I’ve never seen S&H. Quite intrigued now. I wasn’t born until the very late 70s and Battlestar Galactica (Richard Hatch! 😍) was my go to US series as a wee tot.

Must see if some S&H shows are available on Youtube.

BertrandRussell · 18/12/2019 10:59

To do him justice, he’s done a lot for HIV/AIDS awareness and fundraising over the years.
