...can I help choose the next leader? Any other things I need to know?

chocolatespiders · 12/12/2019 23:53

Normally members get to vote

jo10000 · 13/12/2019 00:13

Thanks, would I have to be a member for a period of time before I could vote? Would I have to attend lots of meetings? Would my name and membership be public?

OP posts:

You don’t have to attend meetings and to my knowledge your name and details aren’t public. Not sure how long you have to be a member before you can vote on the next leader though.

Thanks for replying, that's helpful.

I think you can vote immediately under the ridiculous rules that saw all the corbyn supporters appear overnight. It time to use them against them.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 08:06

Im a member and ive never been to a meeting. They send you some emails and letters at the beginning and you can be involved as much a you want to really.

TattiePants · 13/12/2019 08:13

You do have to be a member for a certain period of time (possibly 3 months) before you can vote for a leader. I missed out voting for the last leader (definitely would have picked JC) as I was too new.

jo10000 · 13/12/2019 08:37

Thank you everyone!

So who would you choose?! 🥴

WinnieTheW0rm · 13/12/2019 08:47

"I think you can vote immediately under the ridiculous rules that saw all the corbyn supporters appear overnight. It time to use them against them."

The rules Miliband brought in? That introduced 'one member one vote' instead of it being 1/3 MPs, 1/3 Unions and 1/3 membership.

How long does one need to have been a member for in rider to vote? Or is that something the party sets for each contest (to exclude those who join only when a contest is in the offing)

TattiePants · 13/12/2019 08:53
  • FFS I definitely wouldn’t have picked Corbyn!!
BearSoFair · 13/12/2019 08:57

I became a member right after the 2015 election and was able to vote for the leadership after Ed Miliband stepped down. I didn't vote Corbyn, for the record!

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 09:10

Yes the milliband rules. I dont know if they've changed since then.

jo10000 · 13/12/2019 09:43

I don't know who I'd choose yet but I'd be looking at someone credible, with credible ideas, that would stand a chance of being elected. Don't want to go through this again. Instead of hand wringing at the sidelines I think I need to have my say.

OP posts:
Patroclus · 13/12/2019 12:19

Yes please do. The fix we've been in has been agony-knowing we have a useless leader but the Corbynite entryist nutter block would keep him in no matter what.

Also look into who you have in local politics

willowstar · 13/12/2019 12:35

Last time you had to have been a member for three months before you were allowed to vote. I am a member and have remained a member for the sole purpose of being able to vote to get rid of Corbyn.

willowstar · 13/12/2019 12:36

Ah OK, the post above mine says that the rules were changed so that you can vote straight away after joining. I will have to find out.

OverthinkingThis · 13/12/2019 12:37

Joining one of the big trade unions will also get you a vote.

MurrayTheMonk · 13/12/2019 12:57

I've joined this morning for this exact reason. We've never needed a credible opposition so much and I want to have a say in who leads it. Momentum out, Jess Philips in for me.

TattiePants · 13/12/2019 13:04

@willowstar there have been many times over the last few years that I have contemplated cancelling my membership. Like you, the only thing stopping me was being able to vote for a Corbyn replacement.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:14

Think it was me saying that, I may have been talking bollocks, I last rejoined during Milliband around 2014 so cant remember what happened about voting. I think you will have long enough though, thats maybe what this pause is about.

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:17

Can confirm, was talking out of my arse-

'As a new member you will be a ‘provisional member’ for the first eight weeks. As a provisional member you will only be eligible to attend your branch meeting, but you won’t be eligible to vote. After the first eight weeks you can attend and vote at any ‘all member’ meetings in your branch and CLP. For some special meetings, for example to choose candidates, you will need a longer length of membership. You can find a full summary of your rights as a member here. Don’t forget, there’s nothing to stop you getting involved in Labour Party campaigning straight away.'

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:19

It was actually good all the online stuff you can do with your account, including some votes and the chance for some social stuff as well if you want. You're automatically put into contct with your local branch.

MurrayTheMonk · 13/12/2019 13:19

Corbyn has indicated he's staying til April I think-so if you join today you still might be in with a shout of getting a say

Patroclus · 13/12/2019 13:23

Makes me so angry,, searching for that info one of googles most asked related questions is 'can I join Momentum but not labour' ffs.
