Labelling uniform

The time has come for me to have to label uniform, complete novice, what's best / easiest? Iron on or sew on?
If you've 2 children following each other through school and you have an unusual surname can you just put the surname in? Or am I naive to think uniform ever does 2 children? Grin

I go with decent woven nametapes with a picture on too so that they can recognise the picture even if they can't read their name yet.
Jumpers especially just stitch the ends and then the nametape can be used as a hanging loop.

Surnames only are no good imo as some adults/children who find the random jumper might know the 4 Alfies but won't know who Sidebottom is.

The amount of jumpers that end up in lost property with no name / illegible is amazing.

Label anything you want back including coats, shoes, lunchboxes, hats, gloves, wellie boots etc.
Don't send anything in to school you aren't willing to lose.
Many schools do second hand uniform. Much less frustrating to lose a £2 jumper than an £10 one.

I ordered a set of tapes that said "A Dragon B". Child A had tags that said A Dragon, Child B had Dragon B and C had Dragon. We have an unusual surname (although sadly not Dragon).

I also used to just write Dragon in using a Sharpie, depending on how much enthusiasm I had for labelling.

Thanks so much, I didn't even know that name and picture labels existed, I'll get on the case now.
I'm very glad that the school doesn't insist on logo or branded items, but we're only just starting primary, I'm sure secondary is another matter.

Black permanent marker pen .

Woeisme99 · 12/12/2019 20:48

Turkey once I got my head around what you meant I realised you're an absolute bloody genius! So the label would say "John Smith Louise" for example, and you chop bits off to suit?

Get a job lot of labels to last you through to y11+ You'll need more than you think.
Also the stick on ones for lunch boxes, pencil cases, water bottles, etc.

Lipperfromchipper · 12/12/2019 20:55

I have never labelled uniform...🤣🙈

Georgiemcgeorgeface · 12/12/2019 20:55

I've never understood the faff with labels. I just write on the washing instruction tag with black marker. Does the job!

TeenPlusTwenties · 12/12/2019 20:57

Georgie Depends on the demographic of your school. In some areas people would be quite happy just to cut that off. Sewn in labels are much more trouble to remove.

Yes. Or fold ends in so you can unpick them and reuse them for another child 😂 I still have some left and my eldest 2 are in university...

NuffingChora · 12/12/2019 21:02

Stikins! They’re really, really good.. No ironing or sewing required, survive both washing and tumble drying with ease. I love them!

DelurkingAJ · 12/12/2019 21:05

Woven labels. Big infant school and never lost a thing. Also used for water bottles etc etc. After last year when DS1 lost SIX pairs of unnamed gloves in a year even the gloves are named (so far he’s lost three gloves and they’ve all come back).

Iggi999 · 12/12/2019 21:06

Pick up black jumper same as everyone else's, see label at the neck - go home with jumper.
Pick up black jumper same as everyone else's, have to look for washing instruction label to find name - 50% chance of not going home with right jumper.
IMO.

mousemousse · 12/12/2019 21:08

I get labels with my phone number on them, child's first and surname and the class name too. Still managed to lose two jumpers Hmm

Smurf123 · 12/12/2019 21:10

Please please please label school shoes! Someone at lease one will have the same shoes in the same size

Lipperfromchipper · 12/12/2019 21:12

Why are children taking off their shoes???Confused

Millie2013 · 12/12/2019 21:15

My nametags stickers. DD doesn’t grow very quickly and got 2 years out of her first uniform. The stickers withstood washing and tumble drying for that time

We put her first name (she was the only one in the school at the time) plus my mobile number

TeenPlusTwenties · 12/12/2019 21:16

Lipper PE. Or to put wellie boots on.

MamaWeasel · 12/12/2019 21:16

Umm.... For PE? Or when changing out of wellies?

Lipperfromchipper · 12/12/2019 21:19

Oh god...our dc just go in to school that day wearing their PE gear!! Easy peasy!!

Mumdiva99 · 12/12/2019 21:21

My nametag stickers (don't waste time with the iron on one's). And a black Sharpie for doubling up. Stick the stickers on the clothes labels, inside shoes, on packed lunch box, drinks bottle, PE bag etc etc Do first and surname with a picture. (We had an unusual surname from a country no one else at the school was from - I thought I'd be clever and just get surname labels to last all 3 kids.....of course another child from the same country starts...with exactly the same surname. 😂)

jigsawmaniac · 12/12/2019 21:26

I got a stamper with my wee ones name and favourite animal. No need to bother with sewing or ironing on and so much quicker. Also got some stickers for the non clothing items. Ordered online though I've forgotten the company's name. It might have been nametags or similar.

Woeisme99 · 12/12/2019 21:34

Crikey I'm learning so much here. I think the smuggle gear we've got for Christmas will be a one off then if they manage to lose lunchboxes and pencil cases too!
I'm assuming I'm only labeling jumpers and coats clothing wise, so only stuff that gets taken off? I think they just do gym in their uniforms in the early years so assuming pinafores and polo shirts don't need labels.

Woeisme99 · 12/12/2019 21:34

Smiggle not smuggle obviously, aka the crack cocaine for kids.

grafittiartist · 12/12/2019 21:35

Ordered one set of sew in labels for each child when they started nursery, and am now finishing using them in year 11!
