What is your go to food when recovering from illness?

I've had a horrible bug since Sunday night and been feeling utterly wiped out and been sick. I've spent most of the last two days napping and after being sick this morning I'm finally feeling a lot perkier.

I can think about food now without wanting to be sick and actually feel hungry, I just can't decide what I fancy.

What do you like after a bout of illness?

Miso soup
Plain jacket potato

sausagepastapot · 11/12/2019 20:59

white toast with butter and Sainsburys own marmite- so salty and delicious.

QuestionableMushroom · 11/12/2019 21:01

Tinned chicken soup with cheese croutons. That’s just some chopped up cheese.
Served with a cheese sarnie made with toast.

I always want salty carbs after I’ve been ill. Usually plain crisps, McDonald’s fries, white toast and butter, mash with sour cream mixed in or baked potato and butter. And fat coke.

mamalovebird · 11/12/2019 21:04

Chips - comforting and easy on the stomach
Ginger nuts - sugar
Salt & Vinegar crisps - salt

QuestionableMushroom · 11/12/2019 21:05

Porridge with butter @pootroll (that felt weird typing that!) sounds interesting. How much butter for a standard bowl or porridge? Salted? Unsalted? Spreadable?

Graphista · 11/12/2019 21:26

Mum always used to give us "Chucky eggs" which are hard boiled eggs mashed in a cup with butter and salt with buttered toast.

Soup as many others have said has always gone down well too, preferably home made - usually lentil, scotch broth or carrot and squash - but if I've none in freezer tinned lentil soup will do.

And yes crisps - light and easy on stomach.

I think the salt thing is down to dehydration either from upset stomach or sweating loads so we lose salts and body craves to replace.

Like pps I also crave milk (which is almost nutritionally complete so makes sense from that perspective) or fresh juice (vitamin c and sugar boost I suspect)

Loving all these. I've been living on chicken soup it seems just right at the moment. I really fancied some fruit this morning which seemed strange. I'm really starting to feel hungry now but get full quickly still.
