Would this bother you? (bathroom door)

Our house has a slightly odd layout upstairs, with a tiny bathroom and a separate toilet directly opposite. Because both rooms are so small both doors open outward and they are close enough together that they bang into and obstruct each other. That means that if someone is in the toilet/bathroom and the other door is left open while you're in there you're stuck.

I have just been stuck in the loo (DS2 (6) left the bathroom door open again) for the third time this week and I've had enough. I want to take the bathroom door off. We don't often have people to stay (maybe one or two nights a year) but I don't want to make anybody uncomfortable. Would you be comfortable showering/dressing in a bathroom that had a heavy curtain instead of a door?

Could it be time to take the wall out between the toilet and bathroom.and have one door.

I would definitely go with the single door over the gap solution @Cherrysoup. Since you want to make it one room at some point it will cause no issues.

I agree with the cheap stud wall idea.
Then, when funds allow knock into one.

We have half doors on our ensuite as there wasn’t enough space for a full size door.

They can be planed to suit a non square upening.

Many door closers have 2 adjusters, one to control speed of the main closingand the other to control the last bit of the action - either fast to shut it properly or slow to prevent trapped fingers.

The corridor inbetween bathroom & toilet is very strange. Is there a reason for that?

CaptainCallisto · 11/12/2019 15:57

I've never been able to work out a reason why it's laid out like that - it's bizarre!

DH has been up there with a tape measure before work so sliding doors are go Grin

Thanks everyone for all the suggestions - I knew I'd get sense from the MN collective!

I suspect a stud wall at the end by the toilet and a door in it would be as cheap as sliding doors tbh. Particularly if you're not bothered about it being fancy at this stage. You already have the door, if you're careful you could even reuse the frame etc. 2x2 frame across the end of the hall screwed to walls and ceiling, board over, door, done. When you're ready to do it properly you can.
