Would this bother you? (bathroom door)

Our house has a slightly odd layout upstairs, with a tiny bathroom and a separate toilet directly opposite. Because both rooms are so small both doors open outward and they are close enough together that they bang into and obstruct each other. That means that if someone is in the toilet/bathroom and the other door is left open while you're in there you're stuck.

I have just been stuck in the loo (DS2 (6) left the bathroom door open again) for the third time this week and I've had enough. I want to take the bathroom door off. We don't often have people to stay (maybe one or two nights a year) but I don't want to make anybody uncomfortable. Would you be comfortable showering/dressing in a bathroom that had a heavy curtain instead of a door?

@watto are you my other sister 😁

KnightandDay · 10/12/2019 19:39

What if you changed the way one of the doors is hung, left to right instead of right to left for example. That way, in my head, instead of banging into the open door, you would push it closed - not sure that makes sense, sorry!!

Choccyp1g · 10/12/2019 20:12

You could use a shower curtain to avoid the manky problem

CaptainCallisto · 10/12/2019 20:32

I wish I could post a diagram but the stupid Android app won't let me post pictures (it's not just me - there's several threads about it).

A pocket door? Or sliding door?

mineofuselessinformation · 10/12/2019 20:43

A simple solution would be a cord attached to the bathroom door at the top corner, which then runs through an 'eye' attached to the door frame. A small weight on the end should be enough to make it close gently enough to get rid of the problem.

Dandelion1993 · 10/12/2019 20:43

Sliding door would work.

CookPassBabtridge · 10/12/2019 20:49

We have sliding doors and it works great for small spaces Smile OP could you please post a pic of the doors as I'm struggling to imagine how they get stuck Grin

FlamingoAndJohn · 10/12/2019 20:52

Can you change the side the door is hung?

Jellykat · 10/12/2019 20:57

I used to have a sliding door in a previous very small house, and it worked well.

TheGirlWithGlassFeet · 10/12/2019 20:58

What about one of these? They are very 1980's but would work and be an easy option www.argos.co.uk/product/7012761

CaptainCallisto · 10/12/2019 21:34

I wish I could Cook but I can't do it from the app.

Hope this works - I've nicked DH's laptop while he's in the bath Grin

If you're in the loo and someone goes into/out of the bathroom without shutting the door after them you can only get the toilet door open about two inches (and vice versa). Enough to call for someone to come and let you out but not enough to squeeze through!

That is ripe for knocking into one! But get you don't have the funds yet. What an odd original design!

Cherrysoup · 10/12/2019 22:40

Cheapo solution-stud wall diagonally across the gap to both, door in stud wall, get rid of both other doors.

SirVixofVixHall · 10/12/2019 22:42

Double doors ? So each door has hinges either side and opens centrally, like a wardrobe ?

perkele · 10/12/2019 22:43

Cherrysoup's nailed it - exactly what I was going to suggest.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 10/12/2019 22:48

Split each door down the middle- hinge the middle. Folding doors that already fit your frames.

hazandduck · 10/12/2019 22:51

We have just had our bathroom done and had a sliding door put in by a carpenter, would definitely recommend if you’re tight for space.

IWorkAtTheCheesecakeFactory · 10/12/2019 22:51

Actually, from your picture it looks like you could switch the bathroom door round so the hinges and handle to the other side so it still opened into the landing and it would mean it wouldn’t block the toilet door if left open.

wafflyversatile · 11/12/2019 01:02

Yep, hinging one of the doors on the other side could work.

PigletJohn · 11/12/2019 03:19

Perko door closer.

You'll need a drill.

macblank · 11/12/2019 06:30

Simples.... Sliding doors.

Apart from an idiot like Martin Roberts, sliding doors are so handy, and better than they used to be.

I spent a couple years at a foster family as a kid, and where the bathroom was, they had s sliding door, which stopped the very same from happening. Plus the hallways wasn't big enough to cope with an outward door, and the bathroom wasn't big enough to open inwards either.

Plus with sliding doors, it doesn't need straight door frames, just a rail above the frame mantel.

Alternatively, you can get half doors on auto close hinges... Think cowboy film saloon doors... But better than that these days.

macblank · 11/12/2019 06:32

Having just seen the picture, could you not have an inward door the same end opposite the bedroom door?

Or move the door along so it's not bang opposite the bathroom door.
