I want to use my vote

Pinkyyy · 10/12/2019 09:40

Hoping some of you may have some good advice on how to get my head around who to vote for. I've tried and tried to understand politics but I just can't seem to get it. I think I prefer conservative but I'm not even sure what I'm basing that on.

There are so many different names of people who I've heard, like Corbin, Boris etc but I genuinely don't know what they stand for. Am I right in thinking I either need to choose labour or conservative?

Maybe I'm a little too late and am a helpless case. My family were never interested and have never bothered to vote but I really feel like I should use mine as every vote counts.

@Pinkyyy you’re not too late :) please vote, if not for yourself or your child, vote for mine.
The country is in a huge mess, but if you use the NHS make sure you’re not voting for it to be privatised.

MoggyP · 10/12/2019 09:53

What issues matter to you most?

Do you prefer the government to be in charge of (nearly) everything? Or do you prefer to see more independent options?

Do you want increased government borrowing? Or massively increased government borrowing?

How much does climate change matter?

Pinkyyy · 10/12/2019 09:54

@SeaSidePebbles thank you, that's really reassuring! Which side are trying to privatise the NHS? That's something I've heard a lot about and sounds terrible

Have a go at this:

whoshouldyouvotefor.com/

You don’t need to know which side says what for this, answer how you feel about each subject and at the end, they will show you how your views align with each party.

Then you can do some more research.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 10/12/2019 10:01

Pinkky, it was Labour under Tony Bliar and Gordon Brown who originally introduced privatisation into the NHS.

HTH. Smile

Thanks so much everyone, I definitely lean more conservative if it's labour who want to do away with the NHS. In answer to your helpful questions @MoggyP
What issues matter to you most?
I think taxes, NHS, school funding and encouraging people into work instead of benefits are most important to me.
Do you prefer the government to be in charge of (nearly) everything? Or do you prefer to see more independent options?
I think I prefer the government to be in charge. Too many people just confused things.
Do you want increased government borrowing? Or massively increased government borrowing?
Not entirely sure what government borrowing is so can't answer this one.

How much does climate change matter?
A lot, I really try to do my best with this and to encourage others.

It's Labour who want to save the NHS.

ByAppointmentTo · 10/12/2019 10:13

I am a remainer and a lifelong Conservative voter. I desperately don't want a Labour government but I can't bring myself to vote Conservative in this election. I can't have that on my conscience. I also fundamentally agree with many of the Lib Dem policies.

I am voting for a local independent candidate who has policies I agree with. They have absolutely no chance of gaining a seat but when the country has turned to shit at least I will have a clear conscience!

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 10/12/2019 10:16

Labour want to save the NHS.

Boris Johnson (conservative) is totally untrustworthy IMHO and has some very unsavoury views.

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 10/12/2019 10:16

I am torn between Labour and SNP.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 10/12/2019 10:19

“Labour want to save the NHS.”

Amazing really, considering they were the ones merrily selling it off the last time. Hmm

yasle · 10/12/2019 10:20

just go on one of those "who shall i vote for" websites

they ask you questions about issues and then based on your responses, they'll tell you which party to vote for

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 10/12/2019 10:23

The OP can’t vote for the last labour government though. It’s not on the ballot paper.

midsomermurderess · 10/12/2019 10:24

It's not, difficult. What are your values, what sort of country do you want to live in, how do you think other's should be treated? How do,you think youshould be treated? WADR, you have a brain, use it.

Pinkyyy · 10/12/2019 10:27

you have a brain, use it

Totally unhelpful. Especially when I don't know what each party stands for. Going to use the link from @TheTeethingPoo thank you.

Batqueen · 10/12/2019 10:28

If you care about the NHS and school funding then you really should not vote conservatives.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 10/12/2019 10:30

Hi OP

The problem with posting this question on here is, as you have already seen, you are going to get everyone's opinion on who they think you should vote for..

Definitely have a look at the websites people have suggested they will give you an idea of where each major party stands on each area.

Remember too that technically you are voting for who your local MP will be rather than voting for PM directly.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 10/12/2019 10:30

@Pinkyyy Have you done the vote for policies quiz? It anonymises the parties and gives you sets of policies to choose between. You can either do it for all 15 categories, or pick the important ones to you. It then shows you which parties you agree with most, and offers you more information on them. It's pretty quick and easy.

EpicShitDippedBatBiscuit · 10/12/2019 10:32

“The problem with posting this question on here is, as you have already seen, you are going to get everyone's opinion on who they think you should vote for..”

Agreed. Good advice from others to look at the suggested sites OP. Smile

Pinkyyy · 10/12/2019 10:32

@NeverGotMyPuppy I thought I may come across that, but any information is helpful to me at the moment in order to gain some knowledge

@AnchorDownDeepBreath I haven't done that and it sounds perfect, do you have a link by any chance?

OP posts:
Plaintainchipss · 10/12/2019 10:35

Would reccomend you do the “who should I vote for” quiz.

SingingLily · 10/12/2019 10:36

Do you feel that it's important to keep women's sports, women's prisons, women's changing rooms, women's refuges and women's hospital wards single-sex? If you are having a mammogram or a cervical smear, do you think women should continue to have the right to insist on those very intimate procedures being carried out by a female health practitioner?

If so, don't vote LibDem. Their manifesto promises to introduce Self ID which means that any man who feels like he is a woman can just say so and lawfully use those safe spaces.

Given that the vast majority of sex offences are perpetrated by men on women and girls, and given that sex offenders don't wear labels telling you what they are, lots of women and girls are very worried about Self ID for removing safeguarding and removing their right to safe spaces.

Voting LibDem would mean endorsing Self ID.

hm246 · 10/12/2019 10:39

voteforpolicies.org.uk/

Try this website, you answer questions based on which policies you agree with without knowing who said it. Then it works out which party you agree with the most.

Milicentbystander72 · 10/12/2019 10:39

I really recommend the vote for quiz. I did it just to reaffirm my own views.

To be clear no parties are planning on selling off the NHS.
