Tell me about your hobby!

I've decided my new years resolution this year is to start a new hobby. I work and spend time with my family, dp and dd which I love but I don't do anything for myself. I would love a hobby but I'm not particularly great at anything so looking for ideas of what I can do!

Sewing. Repairs and making clothes, mostly simple things for the kids, occasionally bits for me and rat hammocks. I love re-purposing old cloth.

Horse riding and all the mucking out etc that comes with it. I don’t have my own but help out with someone else’s.

sqirrelfriends · 07/12/2019 19:57

Pottery, it's so relaxing to work with your hands and you don't need to be massively artistic.

Really lovely. Wish I could do it more.

ghostmouse · 07/12/2019 19:58

Crochet. I do blankets mainly but I can do the odd hat.

Walking. I belong to a walking group and do and I walk when we can. Just done 11 miles today around Llandudno and the Little Orme

Aerial arts - silks, hoop, pole, trapeze etc. It's good fun, nobody cares if you're shit, it's a good laugh, I've made loads of friends, and it's given me such a confidence boost. Love it

JohnLapsleyParlabane · 07/12/2019 19:59

I sew. I also volunteer. And I'm planning to join the WI.

birdsarecute45 · 07/12/2019 20:05

I go to a bookclub but there is nothing else I do for myself. I went to the cinema last night on my own and thought I have to do that more often (no-one else in my family likes the cinema).

I wish with all my heart i could resume horseriding but I am very overweight!

Sofast · 07/12/2019 20:18

I always try and learn a new skill with new years resolutions, or I have for the last few years

So far I've learned to crochet, knit, calligraphy, ski, sew a patch work quilt

I dont know what I'm going to do this year

MissRabbitNeedsAHoliday · 07/12/2019 20:30

Thanks everyone, some great ideas!
I have been trying to get fitter since DD 2 was born so maybe walking would be a good idea!

Always love the idea of learning to ski but I'm really clumsy and reckon I would end up breaking a few bones 😂

Aerial arts - silks, hoop, pole, trapeze etc. this sounds fab, something I would never have thought of!

Cycling, sailing, embroidery and I do some volunteering. I used to do an adult dance class (ballet and tap) but gave that up when I started my volunteering role as I didn't have the time.

OrangeTwirlGate · 07/12/2019 21:44

Can’t recommend running enough.

I naively thought only certain people could run and I based this on me hating cross country at school.

But really anyone can run (well, almost!)

And there are so many running clubs these days with people of all ages and abilities.

GrannyBags · 07/12/2019 21:54

Choir - our church choir has no audition and the only requirement is the ability to sing vaguely in tune

clippityclop · 07/12/2019 22:43

Choir for me too. No audition required, lovely mix of music, and the chance to perform at charity concerts, residential homes etc with a lovely bunch of ladies. I like to garden too

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 07/12/2019 22:47

Knitting, crochet, cross stitch, Zumba, Pilates, yoga, barre exercise, flex and tone, body conditioning

peoplepleaser1 · 07/12/2019 23:54

I volunteer with scouting. The young people are brilliant, and my fellow volunteers are all such good, positive, enthusiastic, kind people- I find it great to be around people like this.

I also read, garden do pilates, ski, walk and open water swim. I've dabbled with glass making and would really love to do another craft as I find it incredibly relaxing- problem is I'm not very artistic Grin!

Witchend · 07/12/2019 23:58

Can't, it might be outing Wink

BikeRunSki · 08/12/2019 00:25

Cycling. So shoot me. Or is it just men who cycle that MN hates?

BikeRunSki · 08/12/2019 00:25

I’m also a Cub leader.

livingmyslothlife · 08/12/2019 00:40

Knitting, crochet and sewing. Buying supplies for these also. I've a room full of craft bits and fabric. Costs me a fortune.

SolitaryGrape · 08/12/2019 00:48

Archery.

SamsMumsCateracts · 08/12/2019 01:03

I was in your situation last year OP. I bought a piano and now the bloody thing is the absolute love of my life. I'd never played before, but have surprised myself and surpassed any expectations I had. I regret not starting sooner.

birdsarecute45 · 08/12/2019 07:35

I am very interested in cooking, and I spend hours reading cook books, meal planning and making new dishes.

At the moment I am very very interested in cultural attitudes towards feeding children. I just read alot about it.

birdsarecute45 · 08/12/2019 07:36

I never thought of that as a 'hobby' before, but actually it gives me great pleasure so i gues sit is!

MrsT1405 · 08/12/2019 07:38

I knit as I can do it watching telly for my other hobbies of F1 and rugby league.
Also paper crafts of various sorts and I love to swim. Just do lengths thinking about stuff. Very mindful.
