I love...

God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen

Once in Royal David’s City

O Come, O Come Emmanuel

If I had to choose 1 it would probably have to be Once in Royal David’s City.

Another vote for O come, o come Emmanuel.
I also love the carol of the bells and I know a Gospel choir locally that do a version of God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen based on Israel Houghton’s “tidings” that is absolutely amazing.

Hark the Herald Angels Sing and It was on a Starry Night

Numbersarefun · 07/12/2019 21:09

DuckonaBike I really like Of the Father’s Heart Begotten’ too. I think it’s more of an advent carol and has billions of verses so I’ve heard it sung at cathedral carol services where they need to move the choir from one end to another!!

LearnToFly · 07/12/2019 21:10

Adeste Fideles

Frogsandsheep · 07/12/2019 21:13

Hark the herald!
I love all the ones with descents. I will be at 12 services with carols this year and intend on singing loudly at all of them Grin I’m the vicar!

nevergotthehangofthursdays · 07/12/2019 22:04

In Dulci Jubilo is a carol as well...

In dulci jubilo
Let us our homage show;
Our hearts' joy reclineth
In praesepio,
And like a bright star shineth
Matris in gremio.
Alpha es et O,
Alpha es et O.

That's just the first verse.
(TBH I prefer the energy of the Mike Oldfield instrumental.)

redeyetonowheregood · 07/12/2019 22:57

The Whitney Houston version of Do you Hear What I Hear?

Good king wenseslas

LittleDidSheKnow · 07/12/2019 23:10

Ah, I love all of them, too! Carols are so beautiful and passionate. As per a PP, my favourites are those with descents too, particularly Hark the Herald Angels Sing. I always think the descant in the third verse of that is the aforementioned angels singing. So beautiful.

Hippopotas · 07/12/2019 23:19

We three kings

elQuintoConyo · 07/12/2019 23:24

O Holy Night
Silent Night
I Saw Three Ships
Little Donkey

chocolateisavegetable · 07/12/2019 23:30

Hark the Herald Angels Sing - so full of joy.
Favourite non-carol Christmas song is Mary's Boy Child by Boney M

SmilingButClueless · 07/12/2019 23:30

I always liked See Amid The Winter’s Snow, although I’ve never found a recording with the same descant line we used at school. I swear we were trying to communicate with bats!

cricketmum84 · 07/12/2019 23:31

O Holy Night for me. Gives me goosebumps every time.

First time I ever heard it was in my early twenties, Christmas shopping in Meadowhall and there was a choir singing. They did O Holy Night and I literally couldn't move until they were finished and left in tears. DH had a right good laugh at me!!

MitziK · 07/12/2019 23:41

@nevergotthehangofthursdays Did you realise that can be sung to the tune of The Archers?

Try it.

I'm sorry.

BackforGood · 07/12/2019 23:41

I'd be disappointed with any carol service that didn't include:
O Come All Ye Faithful
Once in Royal
O Little Town of Bethlehem
at the very least

I also like :
See Amid the Winter's Snow
In the Bleak Mid Winter

When asked what I'd like to be included in a Carol Service , I'd assume most of the above were there and ask for:

Born in the Night
or
Cradled in a Manger Meanly
both of which are beautiful, though slightly less well known

If it is a Children's service, it HAS to include:
Away in a Manger

  • tis the law, that one ^

If I were to listen to a carol, sung by a choir or artist, I'd probably go for
Oh Holy Night

Ohyesiam · 07/12/2019 23:46

Good rest ur merry gentlemen
In the bleak midwinter
The holly and the ivy

ChocAuVin · 07/12/2019 23:47

In the Bleak Midwinter
Also love O Holy Night

I’m not religious but adore those!

BadLad · 07/12/2019 23:50

It came upon the Midnight Clear (moving anti war song)

Depends which tune. I usually hear it with the tune I don't like. Don't know the names, but the one I like has the second line at a much higher pitch.

Anoisagusaris · 07/12/2019 23:55

I really dislike Carol of the bells.

Absolutely adore Oh Holy Night.

And all the ones we sang without fail in school:
Oh come all ye faithful/Adeste Fideles
Away in Manager
Silent Night
Little Donkey
Hark the Herald

zwellers · 07/12/2019 23:59

The calypso carol

LoafEater · 08/12/2019 00:08

I Holy Night. I’m in a choir and we sing this every year in our Xmas show. It’s so beautiful it makes the hair stand up on your neck to sing it and sometimes members of the audience weep!
