Scottish constituency. Who to vote for

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 07/12/2019 07:53

Anyone else in this position?

My constituency is currently held by the SNP, but the majority has dropping from approx 14000 to 2000.

I do not rate this MP - he has been largely invisible as a member (didn’t turn up at hustings).

However, I do like a LOT of the policies Nicola Sturgeon has delivered at Holyrood, and it seems -independence apart - a good fit for someone wanting moderate left wing policies.

I am not pro independence, but am prepared to put that aside for now in favour of their social policies and decent work as an opposition party in Westminster and fight indyref2 at another time.

I’m a natural labour voter - voting for the party which most represents help for people much worse off than me seems the just thing to do.

Yet their infighting is worrisome and the lack of leadership on Brexit is infuriating. I’ve got no clear idea of what Labour will deliver and who will be calling the shots.

I’m a remainer.

I find Johnson hideously untrustworthy and do not want a Tory government.

I thing the best I can fight for is a hung parliament, though.

So - who do I vote for?

Why does independence offer stability? I think that gives more uncertainty than ever

GrouchoMrx · 07/12/2019 21:07

The end of the NHS and the welfare state will be the price extracted for a trade deal with Trump. rUK will follow a direction completely at odds with the interests and well being of the people of Scotland.

Scotland needs to get out while it can. An independent Scotland will have some control of its destiny. Some control is better than no control.

Grafittiqueen · 07/12/2019 21:38

Groucho, none of the countries surrounding the Uk will escape the instability of Brexit. Ireland for example are very worried about the effect on their economy.

You are utterly utterly delusional if you think scexit will allow Scotland to escape the instability caused by Brexit.

My current mp is a Tory who somehow overturned a large snp majority. He isn’t standing this time and in my immediate area has been considered pretty piss poor at his job although elsewhere in the constituency is well regarded (funnily enough the wealthier part of the constituency).

Anyway, I’m your classic floating voter having voted tory, labour and Lib Dem previously. I can’t in good conscience vote tory anymore and not being an independence supporter can’t vote snp either (I work in an industry which took a hit during the last referendum, my employer may not survive another). Which leaves labour but I have concerns with Corbyn and the anti-semitism issues within the party so I just don’t know if I can vote labour as a result.

I won’t spoil my ballot but just feel like there is no one for me to vote for!

kikisparks · 07/12/2019 21:59

I’m a pro Indy left wing remainer who would naturally vote green as climate change is probably the most important issue facing us just now, but will vote SNP to hopefully oust Jo Swinson who is in favour of fracking or at least who has voted against banning it.

I’d like to keep no tuition fees and no prescription costs, which I’ve benefited from and hope for others to benefit from, and would like cover for bedroom tax for my clients who otherwise are at risk of eviction, and would like fracking banned and an end to trident. So independence aside SNP are a good enough fit.

You have to decide what’s more concerning for you- another 5 years of austerity, an economy damaging hard brexit, a party which lies and wants to stop any accountability to the courts, wants to get rid of the human rights act, potentially sell the NHS and ignore the Scottish people, or a party that doesn’t have these issues but wants a referendum that you can vote no in.

LunarCrane · 07/12/2019 22:06

Happy to see a thread on this as I've been having the same dilemma.

I'm an ardent remainder.
I also really don't want Scottish independence or indyref2.
Am leftwing and hate the Tories.

Would usually vote Labour but they came 3rd by a long way in my constituency last time and haven't held the seat since the 90s - it's always been SNP since then. The Tories got a big swing towards them in the last election, I assume off the back of people who voted No in indyref.

If I vote Labour they are veeeeeery unlikely to win, but I'm not compromising my opinion on anything. What if that causes the Tories to beat the SNP by one vote though? (They are still quite far behind the SNP tbf, and this is a Remain area)

Buuuuut what if I vote SNP to keep the Tories out, and they see that as a green light for indyref2? I know my one vote won't make the difference, but you get the jist. As a PP said, Sturgeon is loving the collapse of Labour up here and using that to say there's a wish for indyref2.

I dither on this several times a day.

IckleWicklePumperNickle · 07/12/2019 22:20

Def not SNP!!

GrouchoMrx · 07/12/2019 22:25

Grafittiqueen

You seem to have severe difficulty with reading and basic comprehension.

At no stage did I suggest that an independent Scotland, or any other neighbouring country, will completely escape the instability caused by Brexit.

An independent Scotland will have some control of its destiny. Some control is better than no control.

Scottish constituency. Who to vote for
Grafittiqueen · 08/12/2019 10:33

Ah, I'm getting flashbacks to the joyous and civic indyref. I love getting wooed by nats.

So we're in agreement that Scexit is no solution to Brexit. Good.

Take back control? Where have I heard that before?Hmm

SunsetBoulevard3 · 08/12/2019 11:05

@kikisparks
I didn’t realise Jo Swinson had voted not to ban fracking. 😧
Back to the drawing board...

derxa · 08/12/2019 11:49

Or, you could read the thread about Santa vs Father Christmas from yesterday and decide that independence isn’t so bad after all Absolutely.

AShaveAndAHarecutHalfPrice · 08/12/2019 12:58

What is the Santa thread? Can’t find it

I will vote for anyone other than the SNP. If that’s Tory then so be it. The thought of another independence referendum fills me with utter dread. The compete balls up made of the economy, the police, education... I cannot vote SNP. Independence using what currency? GBP with no lender of last resort? No thanks. A Scottish currency? Lolz. You have to create a surplus first and we are way into deficit. Or the Euro.....
And no jobs would be lost if we became independent? Really?! Our biggest trading partner is the rest of the UK. We have a massive public sector wage to pay (and all those pensions).

The other massive problem I have with the SNP at Westminster is that it’s one party one voice. The MPs usually vote as a block as they are told. Or hide in the toilets for the vote. So don’t expect your local MP to represent you. They are representing the SNP.
Sturgeon might be a good speaker but I shall be very interested to see what comes out at the upcoming trial and that’s all I will say on that for fear of the thread getting chopped.

ForalltheSaints · 08/12/2019 13:37

In your shoes I would vote SNP. I cannot vote Labour because of the lack of effective action over anti-semitic comments by some party members. I understand the concerns over the performance of the SNP in the Scottish government though, from what I have read, but this is for the UK parliament.

kikisparks · 08/12/2019 13:53

A Tory candidate just said that those who need food banks can get a payday loan.

Another Tory candidate said those who use foodbanks don’t know how to budget (if you’re on universal credit and don’t get paid for 5 weeks, how do you budget with £0???)

Another said food bank users need to get better at handling their money.

Another Tory candidate didn’t go to a climate change hustings (and the PM didn’t go to the debate)

Another didn’t go to theirs either and their replacement climbed a fence to escape.

Another Tory candidate said learning disabled people should be paid less as they don’t understand money.

The PM couldn’t give a straight answer on changing the Tory twitter to be called fact-check uk. He had a long ramble about a snark instead.

He also claimed child poverty had gone down, which is a lie. It has gone up, along with an unprecedented rise in infant mortality in England.

He has also made abhorrent racist and homophobic comments.

Raab charged the families of the Vietnamese victims killed in the lorry £2000 each to get their family member’s body back.

I can back any of this up if people want the sources. I could go on and on and on with similar examples of callous selfishness and lies.

Is all of this really better than a 2nd independence referendum you can vote no in?

Or at least voting for another non-Tory party?

snowybaubles · 08/12/2019 13:58

I couldn't vote Conservative. Not even as a tactical vote. The very idea turns my stomach.

This list above is just a small example of what absolute cunts the Tories really are.

ssd · 08/12/2019 14:01

I like nicola sturgeon and Ian Blackford. I voted SNP. I am a natural Labour voter but am wanting independence to break free of more and more right wing tory governments.. I literally can't stand Boris Johnson, Rees mogg and the rest. And I've gave up with the working class English who like Boris. Like he's on their side. I have no time for them. Turkeys voting for Xmas and all that.
Sorry if I've spelt any names wrong.

jellycatspyjamas · 08/12/2019 14:12

Raab charged the families of the Vietnamese victims killed in the lorry £2000 each to get their family member’s body back.

Holy fuck, surely not?

kikisparks · 08/12/2019 14:47

It’s kind of buried in the article:

www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-50568607

Repatriation of each body will cost each of the victims' families more than 66.2m Vietnamese dong ($2,856; £2,204), according to the vice minister of foreign affairs.

kikisparks · 08/12/2019 14:51

I’m actually now not wholly sure if that’s a Vietnamese government cost to be fair. It can be quite hard to get clear information on these type of things and the article is not clear. If I’m wrong I’ll hold my hands up and happy to provide sources for the rest.

Notthisnotthat · 08/12/2019 15:22

I am truly stuck on who to vote for, i live in a SNP majority area. I did do a vote for policies type quiz, which brought me out as a bit of Green, a bit of Labour, and a small bit SNP and Lib Dem.

Could not vote Tory at all ever.

We live in the edge of an area of deprivation, my children's school catchment is pretty much split by folk in SIMD 1&2 and SIMD 9&10. We see real poverty every day. The school has an amazing family worker who organises our own food bank and clothes bank. There is a washing machine and dryer in her room.

I am disappointed in the class sizes policy not being met apart from in P1. I'm horrified at the Children's Hospital scandals both in Glasgow and Edinburgh. We are frequent visitors to one of them. The funding of our emergency services is of concern, our city has 3 A&e ambulances on duty at any one time! 15 fire engines though and find it hard to remember the last big fire, the local high school maybe.

I'm sorely tempted to spoil my ballot paper this time or vote for the Greens.

Notthisnotthat · 08/12/2019 15:23

We have had nothing through our door leaflet wise and certainly no one knocking.

skidley · 08/12/2019 15:34

SNP voter on an SNP area but I feel if I vote for SNP it's a wasted vote as its bit going to help get the Tories out. But Labour wont win enough anyway voting them instead of SNP is likely to be a waste. In all my voting years, this election has caused me the most angst.
