It's on BBC Iplayer as a box set and I'm looking for something new(to me) to watch but is it all just babies being born(which doesn't interest me all that much) or do they have storylines that focus on other issues?

It's brilliant with great storylines.

beccy11 · 05/12/2019 21:13

I absolutely love it 💖
It's my favourite Christmas watch x

Louise91417 · 05/12/2019 21:14

I love it, before i started watching it i assumed it was all babies being born and thats why i put off watching it. Totally addictive, highly recommend it, good story lines..

yep

I does start off really good I think, I can’t remember how far I got into it but it was quite far before I was just bored with the constant repeat. There’s like a baby born every episode.

Jodie77 · 05/12/2019 21:18

There's loads that's about nursing, and also story lines about the characters are just about life, so it's about all ages and life really. I find the history interesting and the health stuff, and although the story usually centres around a pregnant woman it's usually much more to do with her family and circumstances and the time period and poverty than it is about having babies. There's a lot about mental health and disability and the laws of the time.

onlyconnect · 05/12/2019 21:18

It's very sweet and tame but there's something really watchable about it. I thought I wouldn't like it but did.

KindredSpirit1 · 05/12/2019 21:19

Reflects the ages I grew up in. Absolutely brilliant series!

prampushingdownthehighst · 05/12/2019 21:20

When it was based on the books it was fantastic but I found after that the quality dipped and got totally fed up of the doctor being shoe horned into the story line, producers husband so understandable I suppose.

Robin2323 · 05/12/2019 21:20

Excellent program.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 05/12/2019 21:20

LOVE IT.

Pipandmum · 05/12/2019 21:21

Well as you can expect you do see quite alot of babies arriving! But it is really about the midwives/nuns and the population of the working class area of London and how society was at that time. Lovely show.

Doubleraspberry · 05/12/2019 21:22

I wouldn’t call it sweet and tame in as much as it covers some pretty upsetting topics. It’s one of the only things I’ve ever known make my husband cry.

Later episodes are definitely way too doctor-heavy.

MrsSnippyPants · 05/12/2019 21:22

Great social history, leads up to and then passes the time I was born. Given me great insight into how women like my mum were treated (unmarried mother).

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 05/12/2019 21:23

I love it. Great binge watch.

Crinkle77 · 05/12/2019 21:25

The books are brilliant so I'd definitely recommend those. I enjoyed the tv series too.

BikeRunSki · 05/12/2019 21:26

The older ones (based on Jennifer Worth’s bools) are much grittier than the new ones (invented by scriptwriters). Great social history and very watchable.

Bluerussian · 05/12/2019 21:27

It's great, I've watched every episode at least once. Can't wait for the new series.

amusedbush · 05/12/2019 21:33

I really love it, even if the new seasons should be renamed the Dr Turner Show. It’s heartbreaking at times, it doesn’t shy away from upsetting topics but I love the storylines and the history behind it.

FloreanFortescue · 05/12/2019 21:37

My absolute FAVOURITE! The characters are just adorable and I wish I lived in 1960s Poplar Grin

hapagirl · 05/12/2019 21:41

I love it. When the season is on, I kick kids and DH out of the room at 8:00 on a Sunday. I settle myself with the cat, a cup of tea and a box of tissues. And I’m sorted for the rest of the week.

TheStaleBiscuitofDoom · 05/12/2019 21:58

Thank you all. It sounds like I'll enjoy it then, especially if it deals with social issues.

Brilliant watch. I loved it. If you can, read the books first, you can tell when the storylines are written more recently!

VanyaHargreeves · 05/12/2019 22:19

I started off loving it but at a certain point, the storylines became so depressing I couldn't stand another hours misery

I stopped roughly around when a fun character left and there was this horrible episode about the neglect of small children and just when you think it's turned a corner the voiceover ends by telling you that they went on to be abused further by other adults.

As it is based off a true story, but made up entirely by this point in the series there was just no need for so much misery porn.

Poetryinaction · 05/12/2019 22:36

It's briliant.
