Bronchiolitis in 3 month old- it’s going to be ok isn’t it?

Currently day 4 of dd being unwell, in hospital now on oxygen and tube feed. The drs don’t seem overly concerned but I’m a bit worried (sleep deprived) she will be ok won’t she?

She will OP. I've been there many many times.
First time DD was only a few months old in for a week on oxygen and tube feeds
3 years on and we are just out from another hospital stay for pneumonia this time and have lost count of the number of stays in between.
It's utterly awful being sat in hospital watching your baby so poorly but while she's in there she's safe and the staff will be taking good care of her. You make sure and take care of yourself as well remember to eat and if you don't live too far from the hospital and your partner or someone else can stay with her for a few hours nip home and get a nice shower
Hopefully you will be home again soon x

Shookethtothecore · 05/12/2019 12:42

Thank you, that’s such a relief- the drs and nurses are amazing and don’t seem concerned but I was having a panic and the tubes in her and the face she is barely waking up today panicked me. I hope your family is now ok aswell

My baby has it at 8 weeks old. Bloody scary. Tube fed, drip, oxygen. Was in for 3 days then home and fully recovered. Try to rest. Have you got a bed there?

I'm a paeds nurse. Our ward is full of bronch babies on oxygen and tube feeds at the moment. Its run of the mill stuff for us. She will be fine. They normally start to get better after days 5-7.

HenSolo · 05/12/2019 12:49

She will be absolutely fine, I’ve been there

I’m afraid we have had a few of these hospital stays with my son but I no longer worry about it as I know they will sort him out. And the stays are getting shorter and shorter as he grows up

I recommend using your headphones and listening to a bit of white noise at night. That way you drown out a lot of the background noise but still hear if your baby wakes up.

Asschercut · 05/12/2019 12:53

My son was just two weeks old when he had it. Terrifying but very common, he was absolutely fine. Take care of yourself and I hope your baby gets better very quickly. Xxx

PinkyU · 05/12/2019 12:54

My lo caught RSV at 6 weeks old, she was in and on O2 for just over a week. She did develop laryngomalacia (floppy larynx) that went away after about a year or so.

I hope you can get some rest and that lo is on the mend soon. X

AlexaShutUp · 05/12/2019 13:03

She'll be fine. It happened to my dd several times when she was a baby. It's terrifying but it's very common. Please don't worry, she's in the best place and she's being looked after.

My tiny dd looked so very weak and frail in the hospital that first time, with drips and nebulizers etc. Now, she is a healthy, active teenager who never gets sick, and those scary days are just a distant memory.Smile

Shookethtothecore · 05/12/2019 13:45

Thank you so much- you have all made me feel better- it’s really appreciated. ❤️

We are about to go nill by mouth and on a drip, my chest is hurting now

It won't be for long. It's just to give her a rest to help her breathe by making sure her stomach isn't full and her lungs can expand fully. She's in the right place and the staff do this day in, day out, all winter.

pigoons · 05/12/2019 15:46

it will be fine. My DS developed breathing difficulties a few of hours after he was born. Pneumonia suspected but not confirmed. It was extremely scary but he was allowed home after 5 days

Kanga83 · 05/12/2019 15:57

I'm here for a hand hold. Here is my bronchiolitis story with a very positive outcome. 6 years ago my daughter had bronchiolitis at 4 weeks old. It took days of misdiagnosis to be taken seriously. She ended up in intensive care at one point on full ventilation and sedation. From there to Vapotherm and NG fed with every cannulas under the sun. This was in high dependency where she remained for a further 8 days, each day the vapotherm was assessed if it could be decreased. She started on 100% support to 20% over 8 days, and her feeds were slowly increased through the NG. After 8 days in High Dependancy and 3 in intensive care she was put into oxygen support on Christmas Eve and moved to a side room Christmas Day. She was discharged 4 days after this. Scariest and loneliest time of my life. She had her christening on her first night in intensive care within 2 hours of arriving as we were told the catalogue of errors meant she was critical. She is now 6 and running around my room like a loon singing 'jingle bells' bouncing on whatever she can pretending that my three year old is a reindeer while I hide in the kitchen on my phone.

Thestrangestthing · 05/12/2019 16:00

Course she will. We were in for a week with ds2 when he was 6 weeks old. He was in a terrible state. Tbh we would have been in longer but one determined nurse came in on the 6th night and took all his tubes out, along with a few other kids and discharged them the same day. I was a bit nervous about leaving as because it seemed like she was just trying to clear the ward. It's very common. We were in a ward with either 5 or 7 other kids and there were 2 other wards next to us full of the same.

Thestrangestthing · 05/12/2019 16:02

My nephew was in at the same time and although he was 4 weeks older than ds, he is a twin and was born very early, he ended up in intensive care with canulas in his head and wires everywhere. He was also fine eventually. Longer revovery, but let out not long after us.

Poetryinaction · 05/12/2019 16:15

If the doctors don't seem worried I'm sure she's going to be fine. When my dd was ill with the same thing at 2 weeks they told me she might not be ok and to prepare for the worst. Thankfully she was fine in the end.

SaltedPeanut · 05/12/2019 16:18

Your baby will be fine. My DS was hospitalised with bronchiolitis many times between 3 months and 3 years old. He is 21 now and suffers no ill effects.

Poetryinaction · 05/12/2019 16:20

Sorry, I realise my.post may not have been helpful. Honestly, it sounds like she will be fine. All the best.

ArfArfBarf · 05/12/2019 16:22

I had a similar experience to Kanga, ds was on a ventilator and sedated when he was at his worst. There are still a whole load of treatment options they can use if your baby’s breathing deteriorates further. Ds is now three and we’ve had no further episodes or any lingering wheeziness at all despite his bronchiolitis causing bacterial pnuemonia.

Fingers crossed you’ll be out of hospital before you know it and take care of yourself because it can be very emotionally hard to see your baby so ill and the consequences of that will probably be the bit that takes longest to recover from!

emmaluggs · 05/12/2019 16:22

He’ll be ok, if Dr’s and nurses aren’t concerned it’s a good thing. Currently in hospital with my 4 month old who has sepsis so I know what you’re feeling. Do seek reassurance from the medical professionals who are looking after him, they’ll be happy to talk to you.

pennow · 05/12/2019 16:28

Another paed nurse here. Your Lo will be fine. K know it looks incredibly scary and you feel very helpless but the best thing is to let her rest. As paeds nurses we see literally hundreds of babes like this every year so we can be relaxed although understanding it is terrifying for parents. She will be good as ever in a few days.

DownWhichOfLate · 05/12/2019 18:08

How are you getting on?

IScreamForIceCreams · 05/12/2019 18:11

She will be fine! I feel for you as it's so scary, we had the same, oxygen, nebuliser and drip...and the following day it was so so much better! Try to get some rest yourself if you can. And get well soon to your little one!

HuloBeraal · 05/12/2019 18:13

Hang in there. I have an extremely premature baby (now a toddler) who got bronchiolitis. Back on oxygen, he didn’t need tube feeding. He was about 9 months old. It gets worse before it gets better. Just hang in there.

LittleTopic · 05/12/2019 18:14

You will be fine. My DD got bronchiolitis at 6 weeks and was so sick she choked and stopped breathing Sad she was totally fine and is now a bit of a bruiser - I’ve just had a plastic cup thrown at my head!
