10.5 too old for Sylvanian families?

DD 10 has requested a Sylvanian house for Christmas.
She has some bits and pieces from when she was younger but we never collected them.
She has a younger sister and they still play imaginatively together. But it is expensive and how long will she like it?!
Nice that she still wants to be a child though.

My DD played with their Sylvanian families until they were in early teens; they had a LOT of it (eBay/car boots) and made the most elaborate sets which they would use to make wee films. It was so creative and lovely to see. Embrace it, I say!

Honestly its worth looking for second hand as there is a good market for hardly payed with items - if you get the base house all the other bits can also be bought separately. We had plenty mostly second hand which was sold on eventually

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 04/12/2019 23:22

My DD is ten and still plays with hers. They don’t get played with for a few months and then they play with them constantly. I like them too 🤩

Livpool · 04/12/2019 23:43

I don't think she is too old.

I still played with Barbie/Sindy at 11.

In fact, I would love to play with Sylvanian Families now and I am
39

Drabarni · 04/12/2019 23:50

I'm off to see if I can find the Hedgehog family if it still exists.

AlexaShutUp · 04/12/2019 23:58

I think we bought Sylvanian stuff for dd when she was that age - I went through the same thought process as you, but looking back, I'm so glad that we allowed her to be a child and didn't rush her to grow up.

I can't remember exactly when she decided to part with her Sylvanians - probably fairly soon after starting secondary school. A lot went to the charity shop but she kept some favourite bits up in the loft. She still gets out the log cabin every year at Christmas and creates a lovely little Christmas scene. Smile

My kids are 9 and 11 and they have asked for Playmobil for Christmas. I love that they still want to play with toys. Long may it continue.

avamiah · 05/12/2019 00:57

My daughter is 9, 10 in February and she loves lol dolls.
She now wants the “Winter Chalet “, £169 😬

avamiah · 05/12/2019 00:59

And the dolls that go with it.😱

7Days · 05/12/2019 01:05

My ten and a half year old is the same. She asked for either a horse playset or an iPad.
Guess which Fr Christmas will bring.

wheresmyhairytoe · 05/12/2019 07:37

My DD is 11 in Feb and has asked for an Our Generation doll. I'm happy she's still a child as in other ways she's growing up too quick.
Go for it, let her be 10!

theneverendinglaundry · 05/12/2019 08:13

My eldest dd is 10 and hasn't played with toys for a while. Last year she asked for a barbie house, which she loved for a few months but now considers herself too old.

If shes asking for it, I would probably get it, and prepare myself to sell it by keeping all the instructions and boxes etc!

DaisyMay13 · 05/12/2019 08:42

She definitely isn't too old. You're never to old I don't think! The longer they stay children the better!

I've actually got all of mine from when I was a kid that I'm looking to sell if you're interested.

Emmacb82 · 05/12/2019 09:18

I think it’s lovely that she still wants to play with it at 10. It still shocks me how quickly children want to grow up these days, although I bet secretly most of them would still like to play with toys but they feel like they have to match their peers who have already grown past that stage. It’s quite sad really.
I really wanted the sylvanian windmill when I was that age, I never got it because it was too expensive but I would still love it now at 37!!

Picklypickles · 05/12/2019 09:22

My daughter is 8 and has asked for Sylvanian Family toys for Christmas, I'm probably just as excited as she is to play with them I never had any when I was young!

LuaDipa · 05/12/2019 09:26

My dd has just turned 11 and wanted new Sylvanian Families. We bought them and she has played with them loads, and had all of her old stuff out too. We spent a lovely weekend together setting it all up and she will has asked for more for Christmas.

I am honestly delighted that she still wants to play with toys, particularly since my oldest has started getting rid of all of his and is now asking for designer clothing and gadgets which is much less fun to buy!!!

ChilliMum · 05/12/2019 09:29

My dd is 13 and still plays with hers, in fact she has asked for some new bits for Christmas.

Honestly, I think it's great, it's mostly iPad music and netflix these days so I am glad she still has something she enjoys that doesn't involve a screen.

FurryScoob · 05/12/2019 09:40

I got a Sylvanian families house at about the same age, I played with it loads & then kept it with the rest of my sylvanians for my kids.

DD is now 5 & plays with them all the time, she’s getting some of the new stuff for Christmas.

Nervousmummy22 · 06/12/2019 00:18

To be honest im 24 and i been collecting them for couple years now i think they are a beautiful collection a wonderful collection. I will be passing them down to my first born once she reaches 10 as thats the right age to appreciate them enough to look after them and i hope she goes on to collect them as an adult and can pass them down to her children and ao on.

Wallabyone · 06/12/2019 00:27

TKMaxx often have nice Sylvanian sets for quite a discount if anyone is looking for stocking fillers.

enchantedspleen · 06/12/2019 06:21

No way! I'm 30 and I would love some Sylvanian families toys for Christmas!

norkins · 06/12/2019 07:07

Thank you everyone!
I've been looking for discounted sets.
What's best to get started in a house?
We already have a bathroom and some food bits and pieces. Some families.
It comes with a piano, a figure and a bed.
So a kitchen and living room?

I'm 45 and collect Jellycats. Let everyone choose what they want, no matter what the age.

theneverendinglaundry · 06/12/2019 08:08

Check Facebook marketplace too OP. I got a lovely set for my youngest on there for a fraction of the price.

LauraAshleySofa · 06/12/2019 10:18

My DD is 7 and she's getting her first sylvanian families sets this Christmas. I wondered whether I had left it too late and tried to find second hand sets rather than new just in case they weren't played with. I found that once you add in postage a lot of second hand sets are almost the same price as new. I expect this is because they have become collectable. I also discovered some beautiful customised houses and furniture sets on ebay so I bought one of these for DD along with some new sets. I really think it's a great gift for an older dd as she can either go down the route of collecting and appreciating the rarer sets or customising them as the interior designer of her own mini world. Etsy had some lovely clothing patterns too. I am really hopeful that my DD enjoys the toys as much as I do.
