Bra washing question

I went to a bra fitting at an old-fashioned shop. The owner was very nice and spent a lot of time with me, but when I got home I realised the bra has an old-fashioned perfume smell to it. I think she must've been storing them in scented packaging. It's quite an unpleasant smell.

I've tried hand washing it once but the smell is still there. Should I risk putting it in the washing machine? I usually hand wash all my normal bras, but I've put underwired sports bras in the machine before with no problem. I don't want to cause a disaster but I don't know what else to do.

Needless to say, I won't be going back to that shop again.

I always mean to hand wash mine... and then I cba and they just end up in the machine. Pop it in a pillow case, it will be fine.

I just hope it works. The woman was so nice and spent so much time with me, so I'd feel bad telling her I was unhappy.

Should I use a delicates wash, or a slower spin cycle or something?

Just put it in the washing machine?

mildshock · 04/12/2019 19:38

I always put mine in the machine. No problems, just a 40 wash with 1000 spin.

dementedpixie · 04/12/2019 19:38

I put them in a net bag in a normal wash. If you want you could reduce the spin cycle

ChipsAndKetchup · 04/12/2019 19:40

I've never faffed with bras. Just into the machine and don't give it a thought. Life's too short for bra faff.

stripeypillowcase · 04/12/2019 19:42

I always put them in the washer. in an old zip up pillow case so they don't get tangled.
imo clothes that can't go in the washer are not worth having.
so what the bra lasts only 4 years instead of 5...

dementedpixie · 04/12/2019 19:43

I always use a bag after an issue with the wire coming out and getting stuck in the machine

BinkySodPlop · 04/12/2019 19:46

Could you try rinsing in dilute white vinegar before using the machine? I bung mine in with everything else, but none of mine have wires / were very expensive.

gamerchick · 04/12/2019 19:47

Just stick it on a handwash or on a rinse cycle with a bit of fabric conditioner. Bras just don't like heat and fast spins.

eurochick · 04/12/2019 19:50

I've washed my bras in the machine on a normal washing cycle for 30 years. I think I've had two underwires escape back when I was a teen but no problems in the past 20 years. They seem to be pretty robust these days.

Oldraver · 04/12/2019 19:58

I have a few underwired bras and I use a bra bag mainly so the wire doesn;t do any damage.

For the actual bra material...well of course it can be machine washed

lookingforthis · 04/12/2019 20:26

What type of shop could I buy a bra bag from? Could really do with getting one tomorrow rather than ordering online.

stripeypillowcase · 04/12/2019 20:28

Bra washing question
dementedpixie · 04/12/2019 20:30

If you Google there might be other places near to you that has them

woodhill · 04/12/2019 20:30

J Lewis and Bravissimo are always insistent that bras are hand washed which I tend to do but what a faff.

lookingforthis · 04/12/2019 20:47

Great, thank you. I probably pass by them in the supermarket every week without noticing as I'm not usually looking for them.

I do usually hand wash all my bras, but this time it isn't going to cut it. I just hope it works, as I know these sorts of smells can be deep in.

So much for supporting independent businesses. I don't have the heart to tell her so the chances are other customers have noticed too but haven't said anything.

They normally hang on an end aisle with sewing stuff, lint rollers, etc

RebootYourEngine · 04/12/2019 21:10

I use a net bag. Think in my local Asda they are hanging in the laundry powder aisle.

lookingforthis · 04/12/2019 21:26

Thanks everyone. It's probably going to be right there in front of me, just that it's not the sort of thing you buy very often. Smile

I chuck mine in the washer on a delicate wash in a old pillow case .
