Need to start some sort of exercise programme, which have you tried and had great results?

Joining a gym and doing a mix of cardio and some light weights to tone up..I started going 4 days a week for an hour each time splitting the hour between cardio and weights. I do different cardio depending on what I'm in the mood for.
I had dropped a dress size in 3 months without changing my eating habits..now that I'm eating healthier I've toned up further and I'm looking the best I've ever looked.

HIIT I’ve done exercise for years and I’ve never been able to change my body so much.
I use fitness blender on YouTube

0hMy · 04/12/2019 18:53

Definitely body pump classes. Weights are amazing for toning up the body. I went to the class initially get an idea or how to use weights correctly but found I never pushed myself when I was on my own at the gym. My weight stayed the around the same (I’d previously lost weight and was just looking to tone up) but the difference in the muscle tone was so worth the gruelling classes.

Pelvic floor
No more pissy pants

Effective for what? What are your goals and constraints.

Weight loss is mainly about food.

I exercise for mental health and work full time. I like group classes (but can rarely get to the times), yoga and walking (now jogging) outside.

Bumfuzzled · 04/12/2019 18:56

Walking - fast pace with hills, and swimming. I’ve never been consistent with anything else such as the gym.

user1497207191 · 04/12/2019 19:00

Walking, walking and more walking. I've lost a few stone in weight solely by doing lots of walking. Just needs to be consistent, i.e. 3 or 4 miles per day, every day.

I've done gyms, I've done swimming, cycling, etc. Nothing beats regular/consistent walking. It's also easy to do to incorporate into daily life without wasting time going to gyms, getting changed, etc, which means you're more likely to do it every day and less likely to think "sod it, I won't bother today".

Weightlifting

doadeer · 04/12/2019 19:01

Yoga for me. A mix of dynamic vinyasa and stretchy restorative. Helps your mind and body and I never got injuries which I always did in high impact classes

WindyScales · 04/12/2019 19:03

CrossFit 4 times a week produced very quick and good results of weight loss and toned arms and stomach

StCharlotte · 04/12/2019 19:04

Ballet. Can I find a local adult ballet class? No. I cannot.

chillychicken · 04/12/2019 19:05

Weightlifting for me too. I still have a fluffy middle due to what I eat (and I’m sorting that) but I have visible muscle and definition on arms, legs, back and chest.

And I feel amazing for doing it. I’ve tried all different forms of exercise before; this is the only one I’ve enjoyed and seen results from.

Bluntness100 · 04/12/2019 19:06

Agree, Effective for what op? Weight loss? Building muscle? Increasing stamina? Toning up?

blodynmawr · 04/12/2019 19:07

I'm with @user1497207191
Regular brisk walk for an hour every morning meant I lost about a stone. Combining that plus 5:2 resulted in a further stone off.
I used to do exercise videos in the house but there is a far better impact on overall wellbeing and mental health due to being regularly outside. I go in all weathers, just need a good coat for those very wet days!!

whatsinthebagwhatcoulditbe · 04/12/2019 19:07

HIIT cardio with weights for me. I do DVDs at home. I was mid 30s when I started doing this and it gave me my best ever figure.

charm8ed · 04/12/2019 19:15

Squats with weights

Jayaywhynot · 04/12/2019 19:18

Kettle bells, you can buy them from argos, get yourself a DVD and off you go, will tone you and they are a great cardio work out

SlayingDragons · 04/12/2019 19:27

Totally depends on what you want it to be effective for?

  • running was the best thing for me in terms of being and feeling fit. It gave me a great level of fitness which made the most difference to the rest of my life. It was also best for my mental health.
  • best for toning was Davina - no question. I’m not one for classes - and didn’t want to spend a fortune so a DVD which I could just do at home was great. Power of 5 is my favourite. I skipped the cardio section (basically like keep fit (yes - I grew up in the 80s!) as it was too high impact and too fast for me, but the legs, arms & boxing sections were amazing. I usually only did the first half of the abs section - once it got to push ups I stopped cos that’s just never going to happen!
  • best for weight loss was calorie counting via MFP and then either walking or running. Davina was an added bonus in terms of looks (toning) and strength but I’m not sure it added much to my weight loss
RonaldMcDonald · 04/12/2019 19:29

Skipping
Boxing
30 day shred
Pilates for core stuff post c/s

HowToStopThis9 · 04/12/2019 19:30

@Snowybunny to go from nothing to four visits to the gym per week is very impressive. What was it that made you keep up with that routine even if you were tired or over-worked or so on?

motorcyclenumptiness · 04/12/2019 19:30

Swimming + cycling + running

NoParticularPattern · 04/12/2019 19:32

Rugby

Ylvamoon · 04/12/2019 19:35

Walking & Swimming are the best exercises (for me).
Brisk Walking is probably the easiest to keep up as it involves nothing but getting outside whenever you feel like you should be doing something.
I have great results in terms of fitness... weight loss not so much as that's more related to diet.

ironickname · 04/12/2019 19:37

When I was little I was skinny as anything.

I used to run everywhere, climb trees, practice my gymnastic in front of the TV and just never really sit still. I'm going to try and be like this again!

megletthesecond · 04/12/2019 19:37

Kickboxing + yoga + body pump + running (doesn't have to be far).

Mixture of stretching, cardio and strength.
