Fresh coffee drinkers? Help please!

DH makes himself a fresh coffee every day. He really enjoys it but mentioned the other day that making it in his press is becoming time consuming and annoying. He doesn't want a machine but I was considering something similar to the press as a birthday present. I don't drink coffee and know so very little about it that I need help! Is there something similar to the press, maybe quicker or just easier to use that I could buy him?

You need an aeroplane. They’re brilliant.

PurpleDaisies · 03/12/2019 14:16

Bugger. That should say Aeropress.

NannyR · 03/12/2019 14:21

An aeropress makes very good coffee fairly quickly, but I wouldn't say it was any quicker or less faffy than a French press. Nespresso machines make ok coffee quickly but the pods are expensive.

Really? It takes ten seconds plus the time to boil the kettle. Don’t you leave your coffee to stand in a french press? Plus it’s miles easier to wash up.

PurpleDaisies · 03/12/2019 14:23

Coffee pods are bad for the environment.

I have one of these for when I'm making a single cup, you use paper filters with it and it's so easy to use and clean! https://www.denbypottery.com/brew-tea-and-coffee/dripper/199041035?gclid=CjwKCAiArJjvBRACEiwA-Wiqq0ZiQqe6OvWCVm6VsOcYM5bYYIA7cWPxxccBiBRcCUNCMOzMq7Z4LxoCpeYQAvDBwE#fooc=2183&fok=f93b5ffe662583b3aa83b84bd91e1d7c&foos=gplauk

theneverendinglaundry · 03/12/2019 14:27

Definitely an Aeropress!

NannyR · 03/12/2019 14:28

I've been trying out different methods of using the aeropress, and I'm getting a much better cup of coffee by allowing the grounds to "bloom" with a small amount of hot water, then adding the rest of the water and brewing it for 30 secs before plunging. It's a bit more faff but the better tasting coffee is worth it.

nordstrom · 03/12/2019 14:29

I'd recommend a Hario V60 dripper. They come in all sorts of colours/materials. You can go simple or a bit fancier (more expensive). Makes an excellent cup with good quality ground beans.

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 03/12/2019 14:30

How time consuming is it? I have just made myself a fresh coffee and it took about 30 second in total. There was obviously kettle boiling time (could have used boiling water tap to cut it more) and I leave it for 5 mins before drinking but I just used the time to put some stuff in the dishwasher. I'm struggling to see unless he gets a machine what will cut time down as even with the machine you still need to wait for water to boil. Maybe you should buy him a boiling water tap

NotMeNoNo · 03/12/2019 14:32

Aeropress is definitely in a class of its own re washing up. I've got DH into using it, we get tins of Illy coffee from the supermarket.

NotMeNoNo · 03/12/2019 14:34

I was thinking of getting DH a coffee subscription from a hipster coffee roaster place for Christmas actually.

My press takes all of 2 minutes... coffee in, boil kettle, stand, press down, done.

You could get him a drip coffee machine?

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/12/2019 15:13

LemonPrism I wouldn't have a clue what one of those is!

lazylinguist · 03/12/2019 15:14

I don't understand- how is 2 minutes time consuming and annoying? Making coffee in a press is quick and easy. Barely any slower ir more effort than instant coffee.

hidinginthenightgarden · 03/12/2019 15:17

Lazylinguist, I have no idea! It is just a comment he made that sparked an idea for a gift i could get him. As I said, I don't drink coffee so don't know about brewing it.
If there is nothing quicker that gives as good results, I won't bother.

I can't see how the aeropress is any less faff than a cafetière.

Taylor's Coffee bags can be good, we are big fresh only coffee drinkers & we use these when camping it in a hurry.

lilgreen · 03/12/2019 15:31

Espresso machine.

lilgreen · 03/12/2019 15:32

Filter coffee machine timed to come on before he gets up? Just load it the night before?

peridito · 03/12/2019 20:18

Well I use this if I want a single cup

www.amazon.co.uk/Zyliss-Hot-Mug-Cafetiere-Grey/dp/B00COEXKJI?tag=mumsnetforu03-21

but possibly not in same league as an Aeropress

MaryBerrysChutney · 03/12/2019 20:26

Coffee Bags or a filter machine. BTW, this guy's channel will give you a few ideas:

yorkshireteaspoonie · 03/12/2019 20:58

Quite a few people in my office use these to avoid the dreaded instant

catlady3 · 03/12/2019 21:04

I've got a coffee grinder and small espresso machine, paired with my coffee subscription it's just bliss (and very quick).

crummyusername · 03/12/2019 21:07

I’ve got a filter coffee machine - just a cheap one from Russell Hobbs. With a jug which stays warm for 30 min. The filter is plastic and washable, washing up is pretty quick and I find it less gritty in texture than a cafetière.
