Is someone’s asking you questions about something negative, you don’t wanna talk about, what do you say to close them down ?

I find oh I’m not wasting my time thinking about that
Works well

“Do you mind if we talk about something else?” And then talk about something else.

Cherrysoup · 02/12/2019 22:25

‘I wouldn’t know’, yawn, look away.

7Days · 02/12/2019 22:27

"I'd rather talk about something else".

It's hard for someone to keep pushing if you are being straightforward.
If they do, it's easier for you to be a bit rude.

Lardlizard · 02/12/2019 22:31

I’m trying to put that out of my mind

A couple of years ago, i went to a baby group with Dd2. I was sitting minding my own business in a group of mum's, when one of them asked me ( was it your daughter that was murdered recently).
I was so shocked someone I didn't know would say that I didn't answer.
One of the other mum's did say I don't think you should be asking that.
I never went back to the group.
4yrs later I would probably tell her to mind her own business.

Lardlizard · 02/12/2019 22:38

Some people are ridiculously rude

I say "I don't like to dwell on that" or "I find that upsetting to talk about", or "I have to keep it together for the sake of the kids, so I don't open that particular box".

AndWhatNext · 02/12/2019 22:43

"I don't want to talk about that" and then change the subject.

CalleighDoodle · 02/12/2019 22:44

Bloody hell @ParkheadParadise Shock

fallfallfall · 02/12/2019 22:44

"it's still very raw, lets not discuss this".

FrustratedTeddyLamp · 02/12/2019 22:45

I'd like to know this as i struggle a lot with MH issues which mean i don't work and am often stuck indoors for extended periods, and when i do talk its so what are you up to? And apart from looking after my disabled mum its just awkward, especially as i feel I'm just passing the buck. It makes me more fearful of conversations tbh

NoSquirrels · 02/12/2019 22:47

"Oh, let's not get into that! How is/are [X/Y/Z]?"

Moving swiftly on and changing the subject!

HollowTalk · 02/12/2019 22:50

@ParkheadParadise I'm so shocked that someone would say that to you. I am full of admiration for you that you can even get through the day.

Omg parklands your daughter was murdered :( I am so massively sorry for your loss, it must be so hard every day! You’re a stronger woman than me, just to be living every day. I couldn’t. Wish you every happiness and love with your son xx

Tolleshunt · 02/12/2019 22:57

‘That’s not something I discuss. Anyway .

Fuck sake, Parkhead, I can’t believe somebody would be so bloody nosy in circumstances like that, it would cause them to suspend every ounce of empathy they ever possessed.

That’s on a need to know basis

((Parkhead))

Orangeblossom78 · 03/12/2019 10:20

Sometimes you don't need to say anything. Just leave a pause and then change the subject. then if they veer back maybe say something. If you want to avoid 'why not' etc

Lardlizard · 04/12/2019 00:21

Also don’t fill awkward silences

QuantumEntanglement · 04/12/2019 00:28

So sorry for your loss ParkheadParadise and also appalled that anyone could be so insensitive and crass as to raise it in such a way. Flowers

I’m menopausal. I just walk away and people just laugh and think it’s my hormones.

Try it, just blank it and move.

Willowkins · 04/12/2019 01:29

I say "well ... you know" and the best bit is they think they do and don't ask again.

LittleDidSheKnow · 04/12/2019 01:30

I was so shocked about someone (workplace gossip) asking me something about family issue that was private (concerning one of my DC) that I just gave a very incredulous and puzzled “What?” in response. She persisted , less confidently, so I went “Umm...” in a manner that sort of implied I thought she was mad.
She muttered “I heard something, that’s all” and wandered off. Cheeky mare.
