You don’t meet any Fidos, Rovers or Rexs any more, do you?

Or, channeling Neighbours, any Bouncers.

Any others?

DH and I (in our fifties) were talking about the dogs of our youth only yesterday. My mum would never let us have a dog, but all the dogs who lived on our street played out with us kids anyway.

There would be a gang of kids accompanied by a toast a couple of dogs. We’d teach them tricks and one at the end of the road used to walk us to school every day. Dogs were everywhere; some streets you avoided because there was a nasty dog strolling it.

It’s quite mad by today’s standards.

GothMummy · 02/12/2019 15:05

@TinklyLittleLaugh do you remember when dogs were put out for the day "to see their friends".... Quite, quite mad! My grandparent's dog used to roam for miles on his own. I panic if my labrador disappears from sight in the park!

Our Jack Russell wasn't put out for the day, but if he saw an opportunity he'd make a run for it and absolutely take the piss if we tried going out after him while he was showing off to his dog mates. He wasn't coming home until he was good and ready, though he did have the grace to slink into his bed once he was back. Things were different back then. I don't think my parents once took him to a vet.

2 that haven't been mentioned which were around in the 60s are Ricky and Judy.

spiderlight · 02/12/2019 15:22

Duke. Prince. King. Loads of them around in the 80s and 90s.

AgentCooper · 02/12/2019 15:27

Dogs I remember from my childhood (late 80s, early 90s) - Sparky, Benjy, Napper, Misty, Barney, Shep and one which would definitely be considered racist now, surprised it wasn’t then.

I know 3 Poppies now.

Baron

Brandy and Whisky were popular when I was wee.

sorenipples · 02/12/2019 15:40

Growing up (90s) I knew so many female dogs with flower/plant names (Poppy, Lily, Rosie, Ivy, Holly) that when i had my dd I refused any such names as I considered them "dogs names".

Uni classmate's neighbour allegedly called their dog Spliff...Grin

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 02/12/2019 15:44

Lucky, Bruizer, Rocky. Used to hear those a lot

Doggyfeet · 02/12/2019 15:46

Rip is a dog name I haven’t heard for many years, also Brandy as already mentioned- Bailey seems a really popular choice now.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 02/12/2019 15:46

We had Rocky, Hamish & Snowflake when I was growing up. Snowflake was black but born in winter Grin

MoaningMinniee · 02/12/2019 15:56

Today my team of dog walkers and I have walked a Mac, a Dolly, a Holly, a Molly, a Viggo, a Millie, two different Lolas, two different Roxys, two different Megs, three different Montys, a Hunter, an Angus, an Alfie, two different Lunas, a Willow, two different Murphys, a Tarka, a Flo, a Twiglet, a Stanley, a Cherry, a Flossie, a Phoebe, a Percy, and an Ollie.

Dolly Holly Molly and Ollie are all labradors just to make it even more confusing!

Only two of those names would sound out of place in a primary school class roll call.

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 03/12/2019 23:40

moaningminnie I'm trying to decide which two you meant. Twiglet is unlikely, the rest seem plausible!

SomethingPhishy · 03/12/2019 23:47

A family friend had a huge rottweiler called Brutus in the 80's. He was kept as a guard dog at a coach depot. We turned up one time & Brutus was off his chain & came belting towards the car, I had my window down - I have never wound a window up so quick!

Ohhh @florriepeck Gyp was my Nana and Granda's dog. He was the sweetest old thing. He had thr colouring of a rottie but was a different shape. I loved Gyppy. Such long, soft hair. Let's not mention the fact he bit me on the face (when he was a pup). My Granda always said he was a Heinz 57 😊
