You don’t meet any Fidos, Rovers or Rexs any more, do you?

Or, channeling Neighbours, any Bouncers.

Any others?

About 50% of smallish blondish female dogs were called Honey

Blondish males were Goldie

I'm a groomer and over the 25 years I've worked I've heard thousands of names, the trend now it's definitely people names, I'd say the most popular male names are Alfie and Archie and females are Poppy and Daisy.

There's a few Dave's too.

My Nan had a Shep and a Sheba in the 70s / 80s. My dads old farm dog (Alsatian) was Major.

Little dogs when I was growing up were always Mitzi, Muffy or Misty!

Prince, Patch, Spot, Scamp, Socks and Lucky were also big doggy faves in my neck of the woods! The 90s seemed to be the catalyst for “human names” - I remember my uncle calling his new Collie Ben and my mum scolding him for giving it a ‘proper’ name!

Had a Blackie in the end of our road, gorgeous big dog that actually laid on the pavement in front of the drive sprawled out had you had to walk round him but a very gentle friendly and beautiful dog.
We also had a Skip, Patch, Whiskey and Sindy in the family.
Our neighbours had a crazy Chihuahua called Tiny so yappy.
All from the 70s .

Yes - dogs are no longer named after drinks - Whisky, Brandy, Soda.

No longer named after colours - Goldie, Blackie, Snowy

No longer named after titles - Major, Prince, Lady, Rex, Duke

I knew about ten Sheps!

Hushabyelullaby · 01/12/2019 22:50

@BennyTheBall my granny had a poodle called Pepe (back in late 70's/80's)

@AuntieStella my friend at school had two labs called Honey (Golden Lab), and Penny (Black Lab)

Bonnie used to be a name you'd often hear for dogs that I haven't heard for years.

behindlocknumbernine · 01/12/2019 22:55

Bucking the trend slightly here, a friend has a Bailey and a Hennessy (dogs named after drinks), and a dear colleague has a poodle called Bonnie 🙂

Floss

StCharlotte · 01/12/2019 23:05

Haven't met a Shep for a long long time. When I was wee it was more or less the law that collies were all called Shep.

Agreed. But the bitches were called Meg.

Lunafortheloveogod · 01/12/2019 23:17

I still know a Prince! (He’s not an old dog either) and our Lady passed 3 years ago now.

Broxi, Shep, Meg n Tiny (Toatie) are all ones I’ve not heard in ages though. Maybe it’s a locality thing.

Ursaminor · 01/12/2019 23:18

ThrowThoseCurtainsWide · 01/12/2019 23:38

Love that someone called their GSD Satan!

Technically our dog is called Prince Eric (rescue) but we've always called him Chewy. Mostly because of the thought of standing in a field shouting 'Prince Eric'...

I feel really nostalgic reading all of your dog names, reminds me of all of the books I read as a child. Even in the last few years the fashion for dog names has changed. I can't think of any dogs I know that have more traditional names.

Dogs I know:
Mac, Babs, Charlie, Sam, Pip, Dave, Mini, Buddy, Schumi, Millie, Hugo, Boris, Megan, Magnus, Audrey, Lotta, Otto, Beetle, Sophie, Blue, Sidney, Ben, Poppy, Harvey,
