The kitten that my mum let me get from a rescue centre when I was 14 lived until she was 19. She was a lovely little cat, and I hope that she had a good life.

Childhood cat got to 22.

I was at work as a junior doctor - I blubbed to every patient I saw about how my cat had died. Possibly not the best look as they were all being admitted with medical emergencies and had bigger worries than my dead cat Blush

Our eldest is 15 now and is super skinny despite huge appetite.

@Itstheprinciple, have you taken your cat to the vet? Large appetite and skinny sounds like a thyroid problem, needs treating.

Probably does, but she's extremely content when she fills her belly and I'm not happy to start stressing her out by regular vet trips. If I thought she was in any pain or discomfort I'd be the first to get her there as I did last year /early this year with our elderly boy cat who had mouth issues and turned out to have a tumour. I practically had my own seat in the waiting room then but he was clearly in distress.

Topseyt · 01/12/2019 11:45

Mine lived until he was just short of 17. Then overnight on Christmas Eve/Morning 2017 his spine just gave out and he could no longer get up, so I had to drive him to the emergency vet that morning to be put to sleep. Won't ever forget that Christmas.

He had generally been a very healthy cat. Hardly any time at the vet at all.

My Queen of all She Surveys is 17-18. We were chosen by her when she was around 2 from the Cats Protection League.
Thought we'd lose her last Easter as one of her back legs just stopped working. Vet couldn't find the problem and said her blood test results were excellent.
Cantankerous old cat has pulled through. Ish. Her leg has regained some function, but she struggles to make it outside in time to poop.
However she seems in good spirits and isn't suffering so we're putting off making any big decisions. Except when she comes and snuggles up next to me and produces the stench of hell. Smells like rotten eggs and death. Then I start wondering!
We'll see how she goes after Christmas.

@Itstheprinciple, your cat needs to be seen by a vet otherwise you are letting her die, just slowly. Hyperthyroidism can be treated or cured.

www.bluecross.org.uk/pet-advice/hyperthyroidism-overactive-thyroid-cats

"Cats that have hyperthyroidism not only have a reduced quality of life but, if untreated, the condition can result in heart failure, blindness or death"

My cat is around 12. He's not a well cat and gets sick a lot. I take him to the vet and the vet gives him medication and he gets a bit better but then he gets sick again. He's had full blood tests and x rays and there is nothing physically wrong with him. I even took him to another vet for a second opinion. He also spends a lot of time sleeping in front of the radiator.

It does seem like cats age at different rates!

mygrandchildrenrock · 01/12/2019 16:47

My first 2 cats lived till they were 22 and 21. My third cat died at 14.5 which I thought was very young, but the vet said that was fairly normal and the other two were exceptionally old.
The latest two are 9 and 2.

He is gorgeous

Aloe6 · 01/12/2019 17:33

@Itstheprinciple You mustn’t just ignore the issue. It could be easily treatable.

Neacy · 01/12/2019 17:39

My friends cat is now 23, all she does most of the day is sleep in her fluffy donut, but she can still jump from one sofa to the other for her treats, she was very temperamental when she younger but now loves being stroked and her miaow is very old sounding, I love her like she is my own. X

SassenachWitch · 01/12/2019 17:41

This post gives me hope, my cat is nearly 11 and I joke that she’s going to live until she’s 35.

I love her so much, and can’t imagine my life without her.

She’s ginger and white too.

My last cat lived until she was 22. She was vicious and unpleasant to the last, but I loved her. My childhood cat also lived to be 22. Current cat is 10, not very good at being a cat (can’t jump) and is extraordinarily dim.

SenecaFalls · 01/12/2019 17:52

Our cat died just a few days before her 20th birthday. She was pretty skinny during her last couple of years and slept a lot, but was otherwise in good health.

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 01/12/2019 18:04

One of our Dcats got to 21. We used a birthday candle in cat meat pate as a cake. PTS 2weeks later due to kidney failure Sad She was the oldest cat at the vets. Still miss her gentle nature 🐈

ALongHardWinter · 01/12/2019 18:37

My DM had a cat who lived to be 23. Towards the end of her life though, she was nearly deaf, and I think she may have developed the feline equivalent of dementia,as she took to wandering around the house during the night, miowing to herself, which she had never done previously.
