Relating to the ectopic pregnancies in particular

& that includes suicide of the woman forced to carry the foetus from mental health/depression.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 29/11/2019 19:47

Never since WW2 has the state of the world been so shit.

HavelockVetinari · 29/11/2019 20:01

It's fucking stupid as well as misogyny. Suggesting such a procedure is possible (it isnt Sad) will give so many women false hope - the VAST majority of ectopic pregnancies are much-wanted babies. How can the doctor turn to a heartbroken woman and tell her that the procedure she apparently has a legal "right" to is impossible? Any way you look at it it's appalling.

I hate these fuckwits who believe women are vessels/breeders and that is all Angry

GumboDrop · 29/11/2019 20:40

Gilead was my first thought too. Fucking insane.

Madamswearsalot · 29/11/2019 20:54

In many many ways I hope it never has to happen, but it will be incredibly interesting to see how it plays out in court if a physician is accused of murder by abortion because they fail to re-implant an ectopic pregnancy.

What absolute fucking insanity are we living in when you can legislate to compel someone to do the impossible?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 29/11/2019 20:54

Unfuckingbelievable.

It actually feels like we're living in some hideous dystopia these days, what with things like this and the raving lunatics in power in so many areas of the world - all men.

Subzerohero · 29/11/2019 22:27

@marvellousnightforamooncup I have to agree :-(

Would this not risk infection? It doesn't make sense

The interplay between these bills and the state of the US medical system is utterly chilling. There are women who restrict the medical care they receive during pregnancy because of cost, or who live miles from the nearest hospital and lack the money to always ensure travel (or the cost of an ambulance ride).

If these people are deluded enough to believe ectopic pregnancies can be reimplanted, I worry for what they'll be accused of in the event of a pregnancy loss.

Redshoeblueshoe · 30/11/2019 03:34

My sister had an eptopic pregnancy.
It was a miracle that she survived.
WTF are they talking about ?

vodkaredbullgirl · 30/11/2019 03:46

unbelievable

FredaFrogspawn · 30/11/2019 03:51

Almost medieval- a form of female torture. Sick.

duvetaddict · 30/11/2019 04:07

Disgusting

Prevegen4U · 30/11/2019 04:20

This bill has not become law. The bill has been referred to the criminal justice committee.

MangoFeverDream · 30/11/2019 04:49

The reason you haven’t seen a lot of news on it is that it isn’t law and will never become law. Ohio has a well-funded prolife op that pulls stunts like this every couple years (last time was that it would be illegal to abort Down’s syndrome baby iirc) and they of course do not actually go into law.

They thrive on this sort of attention btw.

RevolutionofOurTime · 01/12/2019 08:36

They thrive on this sort of attention btw.

I genuinely struggle to understand how this helps their cause though.

I suffered a catastrophic ectopic pregnancy a few years ago, and very nearly died. Had no surgeon been willing to perform crash surgery to remove my tubes and stop the internal bleeding, I definitely would have died.

This bill is designed to ensure doctors would leave me to die, or face life in prison for murder.

The idea that some prolife/anti choice activists would want people like me dead, for no reason whatsoever, is fucking terrifying. It’s not as if I wanted to lose my baby, who was very much wanted (IVF pregnancy). 😔

We (women) are truly under attack. Where does this hatred come from?

Meganc559 · 01/12/2019 08:40

I am against abortion so I think it should be illegal, however for an eptoptic pregnancy where the baby is going to die and the mothers life is at risk, there should be an exception

RevolutionofOurTime · 01/12/2019 09:07

And let’s not forget that Black women have a significantly higher risk of having ectopic pregnancies, therefore would be disproportionately impacted by this bill.

Nice to see how Ohio efficiently combines sexism and racism.

MangoFeverDream · 01/12/2019 09:55

I got a little more curious after the thread revived. Here’s how the bill writer justified it:

‘HB 182 specifically allows for transferring an ectopic embryo into the uterus and defines that procedure as not an abortion. It’s a permissible procedure, not a mandate. Additionally, this bill is forward-looking regarding medical advancements.’

I think it has to do with insurance not being allowed to cover elective abortions but this (nonexistent) procedure would be available under insurance schemes, in the future. But companies would be free to have a self-funded scheme to cover elective abortions for their own employees. It didn’t actually specify that ectopic pregnancies had to be treated this way.

It’s a weird preoccupation, I have to say. But actually, it’s more about insurance and abortion funding. As I said, Ohio has a very aggressive prolife lobby (often full of little old ladies, btw) and they are incredibly well funded, so pull stunts like this with their buddies in the state govt

It doesn’t though. You can read what the bill
actually does in the above link. I hope (and believe) it will be defeated, as I think insurance coverage for elective abortion should be a decision best left to the individual insurance companies

Venger · 01/12/2019 10:41

From the article:

The bill also allows for any procedure necessary to save the life of the mother. This is the life of the mother exception and would include the vast majority of ectopic pregnancies. The woman and her doctor will make that decision.

And what if the woman gets a pro-life doctor or an doctor who misinterpreted the bill and decides that they won't carry out the surgery? In a critical situation there may not be the time to get a second opinion. Women will die as a result of this bill.

I am against abortion so I think it should be illegal, however for an eptoptic pregnancy where the baby is going to die and the mothers life is at risk, there should be an exception

How very generous of you. When abortion is illegal women die, they kill themselves or they die due to unsafe backstreet abortions so your argument that abortion should be illegal unless the woman's life is at risk cancels itself out. All women should have access to safe, legal abortion as the alternative is women risking their loves in the procurement of unsafe, illegal abortions.

MangoFeverDream · 01/12/2019 10:54

There’s no room for misinterpretation here. The procedure doesn’t exist and there’s no penalty for carrying out abortions, elective or otherwise.

It’s all about how abortion will be paid for; this bill would not allow insurance companies to offer coverage for elective abortions. Which, I disagree with, as that should be left to the discretion of the company.

For some bizarre reason, the bill was drafted to classify a nonexistent ectopic pregnancy treatment as not abortion, so it could potentially be covered by insurance.

The headlines were misleading. I literally thought this bill mandated treating ectopic pregnancies with a nonexistent method, it didn’t.

However, this is the state govt that was going to outlaw abortions of Downs fetuses, so I believed it without looking more deeply into it....

Oh that's kind of you. Listen, you dont want an abortion, don't have one

Velveteenfruitbowl · 01/12/2019 10:58

I expect this will go to the Supreme Court one day. In the meantime it’s a brilliant argument for making abortion a constitutional right in all countries or at the very least making it illegal on a constitutional level for legislators to make scientifically impossible laws. Morons.

MangoFeverDream · 01/12/2019 11:02

This is out of context btw. Insurance will pay for it, if it’s classified that way. Otherwise, she will need to pay for it out of pocket because it’s considered elective. (I.e. the legality is not what is being debated, but the question of who pays)

Obviously this guy is not smart and is in the palm of the pro-life lobby however no need to exaggerate things. It’s bad enough as is.
