Incredibly dull things your husband gets excited about

Please tell me I'm not the only one?

We live in a village and have a bit of a drive to the nearest "proper" shops. Hence the excitement over the new Eurospar that has been built over the last few months, opening today.

DH has provided a running commentary on the development of this project, his approval of how they've blended the new construction nicely in with the facade of the listed building involved, his disgust at the choice of electricians used (he spotted their van) his excitement when he peered in the window and realised it's actually going to be a sort of split level effect...

Today I woke up in darkness to DH's head sort of floating above me in the morning gloom, and a hiss of "it's half six. The new Eurospar opens at seven"

I had to tell him that, according to Facebook, it opens at 12,and he will have to wait until tomorrow so we can visit it as a family. He was absolutely crestfallen, but I'm going to suprise him with an emergency need for chocolate later tonight. He will then be able to visit this new Mecca, and come back all puffed up like a pigeon, to report on its wonders. I imagine that once the excitement fades, he'll go back to his previous fixation, "what sort of shed shall we get next summer"

DH used to be a fighter pilot now an airline pilot, which ppl think makes him cool. He's not remotely cool and a major geek! In fact all his pilot friends are

He's really into cloud formations and telling me about them
Building model aircraft and then flying them and mending them when they break. Books about military planes (Vietnam is his fave

lljkk · 29/11/2019 22:50

Professional Tennis. zzzzzzzzzzz

Legomadx2 · 29/11/2019 22:51

This is the sweetest thread. And supports my theory that men basically remain children all their lives (some can hide it well).

My DH is obsessed with keeping stuff eg packaging form Amazon, shoe boxes, wrapping paper inner tubes, in case they will come in useful one day. The minute he goes to work I take bin bag after bin bag to the nearest tip and he never realises.

He also loves (horse) racing and can tell you who trained and rode what horse and where it came in any race from any year.

Ditto politics, which I actually enjoy too. But he will watch the Parliament channel if he can which is a step too far.

lljkk · 29/11/2019 22:52

ps: I could lose a good 45 minutes in the screwfix catalog myself. Blush

Craftycorvid · 29/11/2019 23:02

I’m crying with laughter reading this thread! Another one with a spouse besotted with the ScrewFix catalogue, also....correct sock combinations in one’s hiking boots, maps of any description, estate agents window displays (literally everywhere we go he HAS to peer in and remark happily on 3-bed semis, no, we have no intention of moving, it’s a sort of hobby for him?!). Mind, I get my own back with long discussions of my own geeky preoccupations Grin

Waves to all Emley mast fans - looks a treat looming out of the mists!

ChangingMyNameFromMUUUUUMMMM · 29/11/2019 23:05

Making sure his email inbox is empty (even the junk mail and trash).

Electric cars and anything battery related.

Naming all the states of America/countries in Europe/counties in UK etc etc. Yawn.

EKGEMS · 29/11/2019 23:07

Bowling

GuessWhoColeen · 29/11/2019 23:11

Im single (its been 7 years) and I intend to stay single but I love reading these Smile

HotCrossPun1 · 29/11/2019 23:15

My Dh even bought me a Valentine card from the Screwfix catalogue one year 🙄

Chrestomanciscat · 29/11/2019 23:40

My husband sniffs books 📑 I've caught him at it. I don't say anything though because I have a favourite book about brick types of britain 😲

MegaClutterSlut · 29/11/2019 23:43

Rubics cubes....Confused

Phoebebuffay13 · 29/11/2019 23:48

Parliament channel, weather channel and the most boring radios stations he can find, also flight radar, he even has an app for it! 🙄

To be fair I can talk about serial killers/crime documentaries all day to him and he would just listen attentively and nod occasionally!

HandbagCrazy · 30/11/2019 00:08

Gold Rush. I haven't seen anyone else post it - please tell me I'm not the only one?
Most boring programme on the planet about people mining for gold in Canada.
I earned HUGE wife points by agreeing to endure a day trip to said mines when we were on a trip this summer Grin I ignored it so well I nearly missed DH almost bursting with excitement because he met someone from the show Blush

He also details every penny we spend on holidays and gets a real sense of satisfaction from knowing how much they cost exactly.

He's so sweet that I don't mind but I now know more than I ever wanted to about gold mine water rights and dredges and have nightmares about how much money we spend!

ilovepixie · 30/11/2019 00:14

Checking the train goes out on time. We can see the train track from our front window! And the election. Any election. He's booked the day after the election off work so he can sit up election night and watch the results come in.

ilovepixie · 30/11/2019 00:20

I work in a Eurospar. There not that great. Just like an ordinary spar with notions 😂😂

TheSubtleArt · 30/11/2019 00:34

Screw fix catalogue
Following deliveries until they arrive
Our 'ring' doorbell and footage thereof
Cycling, Tour De France, cycling paraphernalia
The central heating / hot water control
His shed storage, organisation of tools and gadgets

He gets a glint in his eye when any opportunity arises to discuss these things and indulge

Osquito · 30/11/2019 00:47
  • Modern military history (specifically Russian, 2000s-current US and WW2 BUT! not WW1)
  • Freshwater fishing - a specific type I can never be arsed remembering. Something to do with carp.
  • Football - EVERYTHING about football: the psychology, players, the science behind the training, the kits... Disclaimer: I really enjoy playing it, and follow each World Cup from start to finish - I’m not saying football is dull, I’m simply saying DP has rendered me senseless to the game.
  • The Royal Family - a recent obsession, he has started watching The Crown and insists on recapping everything to me despite knowing I do! not! care!

(In the meantime I pursue my Very Worthy interests in scented roses, the use of cement and concrete in residential buildings, maps...)

Plurabelle · 30/11/2019 00:47

Spouse's interest is a forgotten 19th century painter.

His ambition is to identify and locate every work by this painter, and also to tell everybody who might possibly want to know - curators etc - which paintings are copies and have been wrongly attributed to this artist.

This has involved fascinating visits to museum archives to see murky discoloured canvases in vaults.

It also involves huge excitement whenever a painting said to be by this artist is auctioned.

There are phonecalls and emails to auctioneers.

He has also bought some of these paintings, which at times has involved visits to obscure European cities, frantic online bidding and conversations with couriers.

Our walls have filled up. There is no more space.

I am also treated to long conversations about the artist's life, relatives, letters, journals and the incomprehensible injustice of his being overlooked/misunderstood after his death.

I do wish that I had a nice normal husband who was made happy by Screwfix catalogues.

Claricethecat45 · 30/11/2019 00:50

The bloody central heating thermostat. He lives to fiddle with it, alter it and generally provide a running commentary about how he has set it/will reset it/co-ordinate it with the long range forecast.....and on and on and ON :(

When he isn't doing that he is looking at charts of weather trends, getting new apps all about the weather and has 5 locations on his iPhone telling him about how hot or cold it is all around the world...somewhere in Antartica- Vinivartu? - is a place of particular interest to him and I hear daily about how cold it is there....God....

Ursaminor · 30/11/2019 01:06

Goodness - am I a man?

I have a lot of these interests - FlightRadar / tracking deliveries until they arrive / pub quiz type research / daily review of local house movement on Rightmove / making sure my email box is empty / getting interested in electric car research - and just made a note to collect a Screwfix catalogue tomorrow as I really want one!

augustusglupe · 30/11/2019 01:17

10p off a litre of petrol voucher at M&S was a particular highlight today and the various other money off vouchers we recieve at the food hall checkout.

Ursaminor · 30/11/2019 01:30

OMG - Just looked up the Screwfix Community Forum. It's amazing! Some thread titles : "Removing stubborn tiling adhesive" / "Best options for lining garage walls" / "Choosing LED driver wattage."

Although - there is some potential crossover with Mumsnet:
"Can anyone recommend which is better - Shark or Dyson?" Grin

Sweetpeach3 · 30/11/2019 01:47

Football manager ????
It's a computer game with just loads of boring writing an nothing actually happens, you pretend you tell the players off and it plays a quick football game- you win or loose an then tell them off. Swap players etc. Not like fifa were you actually play this is just all boring 101milliin trillion bits of writing an boring stuff I can't explain how boring it actually looks. BUT he will sit shouting st the screan like a kid an ignore me an the kids for s good hour if he's on it like wtf ??

I sometimes turn the computer off it really pisses me off

NewtonPulsifer · 30/11/2019 02:04

Lovely thread, should go in classics.

@DontDribbleOnTheCarpet my DH is also a concrete nerd.
Video games
Hue lightbulbs in every room and lamp
Alexa and all her skills
BBQs
The Ikea catalogue when the new one lands in August
And of course the Screwfix catalogue. He is crap at DIY, so I have no idea why he likes it.
We should arrange a giant meet up for the Screwfixers, maybe the company could arrange for them to have a warehouse tour or something Grin

RainbowSlide · 30/11/2019 03:02

The route he's just run, with maps and everything. I can't bear it!

Oh and air quality apps. It's so dull.
