Have you thought of anything radical, out of the box, that you think would be good for our society?

I have two:

  1. Britain should be 'No Smoking'. I don't just mean no smoking in public areas, I mean we don't sell them . A chance to eradicate smoking. Good for individual health, good for NHS. Govt will have to tax something else.

  2. on the announcement of a general election, we should have a media blackout on the subject apart from

Each party can :
drop their manifesto/ leaflet through your door
Make an election broadcast ( can be repeated)
Compulsory weekly attendance on national TV to be interviewed by Andrew Neil, Question Time etc.
And a daily round up of facts on the nine o'clock news only. No speculation.
Keep it limited and contained.

Publically owned, fact checked newspapers not billionaire owned ones with a strong, independent ombudsman made up of people of all political backgrounds.

Or just Leveson 2 with proper teeth to it.

In my world no one can get rich in public sector employment. No overly paid doctors, lawyers, chief execs or chief officers - no massively overpaid politicians. You go in to the public sector because you want to serve the public and make things better - not to milk the system.

And if you draw a public sector pension, you can’t do any further paid work in the public sector. Too many folk retiring on a good public pension only to come back on an exorbitant day rate/consultants rate etc so doing less work for much less money. If you want to continue working after retirement try your luck in the private or third sector.

The compulsary contraception ones are scary! Not just ethically but I think medically impractical
a) Tweens don't tend to use hormonal contraception unless they already have heavy periods/PCOS etc. So not much study on the long term effect of hormones into healthy tweens/teens.
b) Lots of people don't get on with hormonal contraception - I got debilitating migraines and my GP said I was at risk of having a stroke!

Mine is much less totalitarian, I'd like an hour of PE everyday at school - a mix of competitive sports and things like yoga/dance or outdoor walk so there's something for everyone (With options for DC with disabilities).
I'd also like some kind of society/citizenship lessons taught at secondary school - eg, what's media bias? what's a political party etc.

Schools cover stuff like that as part of their PHSCE curriculum

CurlyhairedAssassin · 30/11/2019 11:08

Oh, and most secondaries will be holding mini elections while our U.K. one is going on.

To be fair, a lot of that is what parents should be talking to their kids about anyway. I guess they also teach it in schools to cover those kids whose parents don’t have any interest in teaching them about how the world works or who are brain washing them with some nonsense.

Well, you can tell who the Daily Mail readers are on this thread.

An effective 100% device blocker at entrance to all theatres/cinemas/certain classrooms/courts etc.

Pet licence - yes!

Cycle licence (I used to have this in the states as a child with metal registration plate etc). Also some kind of identity scanner for cyclists who endanger pedestrians. (Think current car/driver provisions are nearly good enough?).

Some kind of tracking of goods/materials (at molecular level) to enable identification of fly tippers and litterers.

An effective mandatory way of enabling street ownership of eg lawnmowers/electrical tools etc etc to avoid us all having so much rarely used ‘stuff’.

SlatternIsTrying · 30/11/2019 11:18

I normally eye roll my way through these type of threads, however the suggestion of compulsory insertion of a metal object into a young girls body that can only be removed upon marriage - is truly horrendous.

Why don’t we just slap all girls into some sort of full body iron maiden and be done with it.

Whomever suggested it, you should be ashamed of yourself.

Some shocking ideas here around forced contraception.

I like KenDodd's idea of moving parliament to a really poor town somewhere, also the comments around tax and MP's actions.

Also like the ideas around new builds being more eco, facilities on estates , easier waste disposal and more citizenship work with teenagers as part of school curriculum.

ForalltheSaints · 30/11/2019 11:42

I'm not the first one to think this but for me it would be having British Summer Time all year round.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/11/2019 12:15

I also really like KenDodd's suggested move of parliament and, if it would seem like a punishment to MPs, then that confirms that it would be the right thing to do.

I would hunt down these feckless fathers and make them pay for the children they create. They can create as many as they like - but they have to pay for them, all of them - no escape. I'd bankrupt them before they'd get away - and castrate them if they dared to father another one.

Class sizes of maximum 15 children

Free 8 hrs of therapy for every adult

Legalise and heavily tax cannabis to pay for the above

egontoste · 30/11/2019 13:22

Perhaps our justice system needs an overhaul.
