Have you thought of anything radical, out of the box, that you think would be good for our society?

I have two:

  1. Britain should be 'No Smoking'. I don't just mean no smoking in public areas, I mean we don't sell them . A chance to eradicate smoking. Good for individual health, good for NHS. Govt will have to tax something else.

  2. on the announcement of a general election, we should have a media blackout on the subject apart from

Each party can :
drop their manifesto/ leaflet through your door
Make an election broadcast ( can be repeated)
Compulsory weekly attendance on national TV to be interviewed by Andrew Neil, Question Time etc.
And a daily round up of facts on the nine o'clock news only. No speculation.
Keep it limited and contained.

@... following your logic I’d be tempted to say people with sociopathic ideas like yours should be barred from having children

MrsFezziwig · 28/11/2019 23:24

Ylfa
Can we just vote on all the important things directly and not have any elected representatives?

Yes, because that was so successful the last time we tried it Confused

ConfessionsOfTeenageDramaQueen · 29/11/2019 05:56

I would restructure society so it was more common to have kids straight out of uni and then by the time you're 30 your kids are between 5-10 and a bit more self-sufficient and you can begin really focusing on your career, rather than spending your 20s focusing on your career then having to choose between seeing it flourish and having kids in your 30s.

megletthesecond · 29/11/2019 06:57

All new builds to have solar panels, grey water recycling, window boxes and a suitable small tree in the garden. And hedgehog fence holes. Cycle lanes everywhere, ideally next to main roads and not tucked away on isolated paths. Bike racks to be front of public buildings and shops.

For it to no longer be acceptable to regularly work through lunch and sit at a desk all day.

Politics, media and economics to be taught in secondary school. I think they're covered quickly at the moment but considering the mess we're in it wouldn't hurt to drill down and cover the subjects in depth.

clearsommespace · 29/11/2019 07:18

@Verily1

Tax all British citizens living abroad?

That's hardly fair for someone in my position who has lived, worked and paid taxes in another country for 18 years and has no right to vote in the UK.

Flippingnorah · 29/11/2019 07:23

In my magical, make believe world:

Every person has an on/off contraceptive switch that only a GP can switch on when you feel ready to have children.

Criminals like rapists and murderers all get sent to Antarctica to die to think about what they've done... Forever.

There's no such thing as religion

There's no such thing as drugs (not medical like paracetamol)

Women are equal. In every country.

The world is one big United place that all follow the same laws and principles, free movement and trading. No war, no conflict. No hunger.

Schools teach life skills mentioned in PP like how to form healthy relationships, spending, tax, CV, mortgage etc. Away with exams and testing.

sockittome123 · 29/11/2019 07:30

A new political party that asks Brexiteers "what were you hoping to get out of Brexit?"

If its something like "more money for the NHS" etc, that can be negotiated.

I am aware that this probably isn't possible in real life, but I wish it was! Grin

KenDodd · 29/11/2019 07:50

Also, make it an imprisonable offence for MPs or their families to benefit financially from policy they have introduced or policy they have failed to remove. Benefit beyond what anyone else would that is, so if they benefit from extra child benefit, for example, that's fine.

KenDodd · 29/11/2019 07:52

So for example if MPs make millions for themselves shorting the pound after something they've done in parliament - prison.

SimonJT · 29/11/2019 09:59

I’m genuinely horrified that someone on here wants girls who have hit puberty (so potentially only 8 years old) to forcibly have a speculum inserted into her vagina before a coil is forcibly inserted, possibly also subjecting her to painful heavy periods for years.

How can people advocate for child cruelty like that? I hope that poster doesn’t have any daughters as clearly their welfare would not be a concern.

I’m also shocked how any people are pro-eugenics, probably fans of south america’s forced sterilisation of women.

I would have child neglect etc taken much more seriously.

MPs could only be in power for a certain number of terms.

Greater rights/conditions for renters.

Better quality and more affordable early years childcare.

Better incentives to dentists to increase the number of NHS dentists.

Highly tax all animal products, no one needs to eat meat on a daily basis.

Fine manufacturers for producing excessive amounts of non-biodegradable waste.

Means test the state pension.

Compulsory training schemes for those out of work once their youngest child reaches 12 months.

WeshMaGueule · 29/11/2019 10:34

I'm with clearsommespace, if I'm going to be subject to UK taxation then I want my fricking vote back.

BackOnceAgainWithABurnerEmail · 29/11/2019 12:11

I would have politics made more attractive to normal people. Having to be there in person to vote or speak in a debate is out of date. Having debates that start at teatime and run into the night - no. It needs to be much more like a normal job with set hours, pay and use technology or we won’t break the stranglehold of emotional illiterate southern wealthy men with non-working partners who they don’t mind not seeing all week.

I think I’d make a great MP but who would sacrifice any sort of life to be one. Seriously, you’ve got to be fairly unusual and a few people breastfeeding in parliament makes me think that more not less.

No heriditary lords. Minimum activity required of lords and a retirement age brought in.

It would make them prioritise a bit more too. No more pet project bills and debates on flags etc.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 29/11/2019 12:36

Only got as far as page 3, but threads like this make me scared that we are allowed to vote.

Bezalelle · 29/11/2019 13:12

Communism.

lesleyw1953 · 29/11/2019 13:23

Death penalty for littering

TheSandman · 29/11/2019 17:00

Ha! Better rationing, corruption then was rife and would be now, it wasn't a better diet, it was barely enough to keep a person alive, hence, corruption and theft were rife.

True. I remember my dad telling me that they ate better after air raids during WW2. His father (my grandfather) worked in the docks and it was easier to steal stuff if there was a raid on. Honest working class family doing whatever it took to survive. The idea that we were "all in it together" and "making sacrifices for the war effort" were all very well in principal - especially if you were middle class and had stuff to spare - but when the opportunity arose...

TheSandman · 29/11/2019 17:05

Make voting compulsory - hefty fine for not voting - and everyone who does vote gets a Lottery Ticket with a £1m prize. (Only one winner). Carrot and stick.

hungrywalrus · 29/11/2019 17:05

Big tax incentives for the elderly to downsize so that houses that are needed for families with young kids come onto the market. Either that or they do what they do in some parts of Switzerland and have to pay a tax for how much rent the house would be worth so as to disincentivise having excess space.

kshaw · 29/11/2019 17:13

I think in order to get your job seekers benefit you should have to do a day community service a fortnight. Like litter picking side of motorways, litter picking in rural areas, road sweeping, washing graffiti, sorting recycling (even though this wouldn't be fun) socialising with the elderly etc. It gives you more work experience and team working skills and the state gets something in return for the pay out. I've previously claimed job seekers and would have embraced it.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/11/2019 17:19

These are jobs that need filling and should be paid at NMW. Not farmed out to people to earn 128 quid a week benefits for 30 hours or whatever of work

Or maybe the hours required should be such that the Jobseekers Allowance works out at NMW.

Cinammoncake · 29/11/2019 18:12

I think that's a great idea chillimayo

housinghelp101 · 29/11/2019 18:24

Abolish private schools and bring in a single tier education system, with money spent equally across the board, much like the Scandinavian model.

Verily1 · 29/11/2019 19:28

would drastically change the world I think- would kill off the human race!

scrabblecrazy · 29/11/2019 19:34

Charging a fee of £10 to access a&e, regardless of if you need open heart surgery or a plaster.
People in receipt of benefits could have an automatic deduction.
Wouldn't be a great loss to people, and would stop a lot of the time wasters/morons clogging the service up.

OhioOhioOhio · 29/11/2019 19:37

One hour compulsory hard core exercise for children up to the age of 18. They should go home on Friday night begging to sleep.
