Dairy Diary cookbook biscuit recipe help please

I'm trying to find a biscuit recipe that I used back in the 90s from my mum's old dairy diary cookbook that was probably from the 70s or possibly 80s. It was a basic recipe but then you could add dried fruit or bits or spice. I used to make cherry ones and cinnamon ones at Christmas. It was the first recipe in the biscuit section and the picture was a few mason type jars full of various biscuits. All I can remember is plain flour and an egg yoke for combining. No idea on amounts of sugar or butter but they were the best homemade biscuits ever. They didn't spread out much so retained their shape. Can anyone help please?

Sorry, it's this one, not dairy diary. Does anyone have a copy that they could photograph the recipe please?

I have this edition inherited from my grandma, but this biscuit recipe appears to have lots of adaptations?

Peasweet · 26/11/2019 18:07

My first ever post! I have my Mum's copy but don't know how to attach photo, so here's the recipe, old school!

Plain Biscuits.

225g/8oz self raising flour
Pinch of salt
150g/5 oz butter
100g/4oz Caster or sifted Icing sugar
Beaten egg to mix

Sift flour and salt. Rub in butter to fine crumb. Add sugar. Mix to very stiff dough with egg. Knead until smooth and wrap and chill for 30 mins. Roll out fairly thin, cut about 30 rounds with 5cm cutter. Transfer to buttered tray. Prick with fork and bake centre of oven, st 180*c for 12/15 mins.

Enjoy!

My grandma used to use that cookbook. She made the most amazing chocolate cake from it..... many happy memories of watching her bake using it.

MikeUniformMike · 26/11/2019 18:21

The book is available on line.
The biscuit recipe is likely to be a basic one. If you search, don't use an american recipe or you'll get scones.

might be something similar

I think Peasweet's recipe looks good. Well done on your first post.

Peasweet · 26/11/2019 18:35

Thanks Mike Smile have only been reading/lurking for about five years...Grin

Ooh, a bit of a random hijack, but if any one with old Dairy Diarys, or poss even that cookbook, can recall and locate the recipe for a homemade lemon ice cream, I would love to recreate it. I remember it had lemon zest in it, and was very tart, but sweet at the same time.

IncyWincyGrownUp · 26/11/2019 19:51

Damn, that brings back memories!

Peasweet · 26/11/2019 20:15

@origamiwarrior.. from same cookbook above. Cream Ice, though? Attempting photo attachment.. Grin

@Peasweet

Yes, that's it - thank you!!!!

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 27/11/2019 19:22

I remember learning buttercream, white sauce and.cheese sauce from this book as a child. The dc are excited for biscuits at the weekend and want to mane mince pies too. Christmas season starts on Sunday with all decorations going up except the tree.

Weekend plans sound lovely, @BercowsFestiveFlamingo. Come back and show us the results!

I have that book passed down from my Mum. I've made more things from that, with more success than any other cook book I've owned. I've largely avoided the offal section though Grin

MurrayTheMonk · 28/11/2019 06:04

There is an amazing recipe in that book for a Corned beef pie however which sounds grim but is actually the nuts if you want a taste of the 70's...

circleorsquare · 28/11/2019 06:50

We have a slightly newer version of this book and call it the bible! Loads of good recipes we use all the time!

katewhinesalot · 28/11/2019 06:55

The last time I made a cake using that tried and tested recipe from that book from my youth, it was as flat as a pancake. Apparently flour has changed since. Be aware.

BercowsFestiveFlamingo · 28/11/2019 08:12

I'm really tempted to get a copy off eBay. I much prefer a book than an online recipe.

Good lord peasweet..how have you kept quiet for so long 😂

Peasweet · 28/11/2019 16:59

@Dowser I know.. maybe because I never shut up IRL Grin but had the practical answer to this..

@MurraytheMonk. My partner still sometimes remenisces over my Mum's (that) corned beef pie. Doesn't know the recipe book's in the cupboard. Wink

@BercowsFestiveFlamingo Having a nostalgic flick through it last night, I found it really does cover lots. Even four, yes four, little sections on the making of sandwiches. Grin
