Help name our new kitten, please!

We are going to take possession of this cutie tomorrow, but need a name, quick!
She’s black, fluffy and female. She’s really going to be DD(10)’s cat, so she wants something quite cute and has already rejected my suggestions of Ninja, Shadow and Spooky, however we’re all stuck for other suggestions!

Thanks

Ha, yes, I’d gone a bit quiet as there was nothing to relate, but DD has finally chosen a name that no one hates. After trying Voldemort and Ivy for size, then brief stints as Muffin, Truffle, Inky and Periwinkle, DD has decided on...

..... drumroll....

.....Pepper!

I believe thanks are owed to chipsandgin who first suggested it.

She’s great. Was so nervous yesterday but now is miaowing and purring and loves to be held. She’s not eating much yet, and apparently doesn’t wee or poo (we’ll keep an eye on this.)

It seems the photo I showed in the OP was a sibling (or photoshop) as her eyes are not that blue, but more grey. She’s still gorgeous though.
Photo of the real Pepper attached.

Thanks for all the wonderful suggestions.

(And for sending me into a nostalgic reverie about Alias Smith and Jones; that was just my era!)

Sorry BIWI couldn’t pick Karen, as that’s my NDNs name so it would’ve been a bit weird!

Beautiful. Hello Pepper!

PS It's normal for a kitten's eyes to change colour as they grow.

Aw! She's beautiful. Why is it that so many people don't like black cats?

bellinisurge · 28/11/2019 06:29

Hello, Pepper. Already it looks like the perfect name!

chipsandgin · 28/11/2019 08:37

Aw !! :)

She looks absolutely gorgeous & Pepper definitely suits her!

KittenCuteness · 28/11/2019 09:03

She’s started weeing and pooing now. It’s amazing how much a little kitten can contain. 😒Problem is, it’s not in her litter tray.

We had an enclosure where her igloo, food, toys and litter tray were, but she’s already managed to scale the walls so is now free range and not necessarily near her litter tray (she lived in a barn before with her mother, aunt, siblings and cousins, so wasn’t litter trained).

Any tips gratefully received.

I should post in The Litter Tray, really. I’ll do that today.

No tips about the litter tray but watching because one of my foster kittens is also vague about where to pee and poo.

GuppytheCat · 28/11/2019 09:27

Ah. How old is she? (If her eyes are still grey-blue, probably quite young, which is good and bad.) Litter training an older kitten is a bit hit and miss if their mother didn't do it for you.

However: make sure it's a shallow litter tray, put it where she last wee-ed or pooed (so it smells right) or in a quiet corner, and plonk her in it when she's just eaten. Usually you'd try to use the cat litter that she already knows, but that doesn't apply here, so probably use a newspaper-based or soft wood pellet one.

And don't leave other things around (like lovely clean washing) that she could scrabble in instead!

KittenCuteness · 28/11/2019 09:55

Thanks Guppy, She’s 8-9 weeks old. I’ll persist with regular plonking in litter tray near previous toileting site.

When she does have an accident, don’t scold her, but wipe it up with a tissue, and put it and her in the litter tray. Then ‘scratch’ around and show her that THIS is where she goes to the toilet.

Separate her litter as far away from her food too, they don’t like to shit where they eat Wink

KittenCuteness · 28/11/2019 13:15

Put the “accident” in the litter tray. Genius! I’ll try that. Many thanks.

Oh she’s adorable though... purrs all the time and just wants to be picked up!

Oh dear gods she's adorable! I was going to suggest Squeep. . not that that's a name, but it's the first thing I said when I saw the photoGrin

@Cailindeas35 your Charlie looks just like my Dobby! Do you have his clone?!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 28/11/2019 19:52

watch her whenever she goes near her chosen non-litter-tray place : you will see her squat when she is ready to go. when that happens grab her and pop her in the litter tray.

cats have an instinct that there is a polite place to toilet. even though she didn't have a litter tray in the barn there would have been a place that mum showed the kittens to use and she has picked the place that seems most similar. she will be happy to use a different place once she understands.

RockinHippy · 28/11/2019 20:25

Gorgeous. She looks like a Mouse or Marmite to me.

We've had black cats named...

Siouxsie
Lucy
Jak
Sooty
Sweep

Gratuitous photo of Siouxsie at 4 months. Now AKA as the dark destroyer or soggy puss. She's barking mad, loves water, is the naughtiest at I've ever had own me, but gets away with it as she's such a soppy sweet natured thing too 😻

I would have said Mattie.
But I love the name Pepper (my 1st rabbit was called that)

sashh · 29/11/2019 05:28

Move the tray away from her food, if she poos put her food bowl where she pooed, cats like space between eating and toileting (a bit like humans).

Justtryinghere · 29/11/2019 15:10

We have Bellatrix and Myrtle

mathanxiety · 29/11/2019 19:45

If there's a spot she seems to favour for toileting and it's not completely unsuitable, could you put the litter box there?

We did that with our own kitten of unknown parentage and origins who wasn't litter trained when she arrived. It worked..

Keep food/water and the litter box apart.

KittenCuteness · 30/11/2019 08:45

Thank you all, lots of very helpful information. I think we’re seeing some progress, although she apparently hasn’t pooed since yesterday morning which is worrying... there may be one hiding somewhere!

Our problem is our house is big and open plan, so it’s difficult to keep her contained! Then again she’s happiest when with people anyway. She’s an absolute extrovert now, completely bonkers. And purring is her default setting!
