Hands up, who regularly gets an std test?

Every time a thread pops up about being promiscuous, someone invariably pops up and says along the lines of urrggg, I wouldn't touch with a barge pole as they must be full of diseases etc.

So regardless of how many you have, or haven't' fucked, how often do you get tested if at all?

Me. Every couple of months I get the full works of genitals, blood and mouth.

Me. Every couple of months I get the full works of genitals, blood and mouth.

How much do you pay for that?

What makes you such high risk?

I have never been for specific STD tests. I believe I was tested for HIV during my pregnancies but it was a few years ago now so I can't remember the details

oohnicevase · 22/11/2019 14:40

Why not just practice safe sex ? Isn't a bit like closing the stable door after the horse has bolted ?

Picklypickles · 22/11/2019 14:44

I got tested once, probably about 16/17 years ago when my ex cheated on me. I've been with current partner for 12 years now, he never goes anywhere so can't have cheated so what's the point!

Never had one

Babyiwantabump · 22/11/2019 14:46

I used to go regularly ish - but since have been with partner 12 years only a couple of times when we first got together (made him go too) and not since then.

No need to really

Selfsettling3 · 22/11/2019 14:46

DH and I were tested early on in our relationship before we stopped using condoms. So about 12 years ago.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 22/11/2019 14:48

I was offered one at the GP when i went for a smear last week. But having only had sex with one person for the last 25 yrs i didn't feel the need.

JaffaCakeGal · 22/11/2019 14:49

I was going every 3-6 months but it's been nearly a year now as have (kind of) settled down. Grin

Twooter · 22/11/2019 14:50

OP, are you a porn star or do you not trust your partner?

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 14:50

Why not practice safe sex?

Do you mean to refrain from sex as that's the only safe way?

STD tests are free including oral ones. Sone you don't even need to pop to the local gum clinic, and you can test at home.

Celebelly · 22/11/2019 14:52

Never tbh. I had a random panic while pregnant that it would turn out I had HIV somehow. But I didn't.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 14:52

No partner.
Not a porn star.

Just generally wondering how much people test based on the urrgggg nasty, comments when it comes to serial shaggers.

DrDetriment · 22/11/2019 14:53

Every few months? Blimey. You must be permanently testing yourself. I've only ever heard of porn stars doing that. I've tested myself once, when I met DP a couple of years ago after a few casual relationships.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 14:55

Not just porn stars who test regularly.

I've always tested regularly because yea I don't have a partner lol, and because the incubation period of some takes longer to show up on tests.

OP posts:
DrDetriment · 22/11/2019 15:08

You must have a lot of different partners then. I understand the frequent testing if that's the case. Not judging. Just commenting.

speakout · 22/11/2019 15:12

Never.

I think I was given a routine HIV/std test during my last pregnancy- 20 years ago.
Never since.
Wouldn't cross my mind to have an STD test.

ffswhatnext · 22/11/2019 15:15

The number of partners is irrelevant surely as we all should get tested not only between relationships but when in relationships.

Yea you shouldn't have to, but you can never say for certain what your partner does when they aren't with you.

I didn't take it as judgement, it's a valid comment.

I'm now interested in why people never get tested.

MrsFoxPlus4Again · 22/11/2019 15:18

Probably only routinely during my pregnancies & iv agreed during my smear tests because why not. Iv only ever been with my partner though. My cousin is promiscuous and gets tested every 6 months.

cocoabasher · 22/11/2019 15:23

STD tests are free including oral ones

They are not free though. They may be free to you but they cost who we provides the test. Every 2 months is excessive and ridiculous unless you actually have reason.

The number of partners is irrelevant surely as we all should get tested not only between relationships but when in relationships.

Eh? I suppose it depends on your relationship?

rededucator · 22/11/2019 15:23

Every couple of months? You do know these tests are expensive for NHS? There should be no need for them that regularly if you are using barrier methods of contraception.

cocoabasher · 22/11/2019 15:24

I'm now interested in why people never get tested.

Because I am not at risk 🤷‍♀️

speakout · 22/11/2019 15:28

I don't get tested either.

Hefzi · 22/11/2019 15:28

Every year when I collect my pill for the year. I've been celibate completely the last five years, but not everything shows up immediately, and it's just basic good health practice.

I didn't start til my 30s, and have a past as a serial shagger - it's more good luck than good judgement I've never had an STI, if I am brutally honest. But - I've been in the pattern of getting tested for the last fifteen or so years, and the nurse at the walk in has encouraged me to be tested the last few years also, despite no partners.

If I were in an LTR and faithful, I wouldn't test unless my partner had cheated. But for a single person, it just seems like common sense, even when practicing safe sex.

speakout · 22/11/2019 15:30

Why just std? What about TB? Lyme disease?

I don't get the obsession.

Keepthebloodynoisedown · 22/11/2019 15:33

I’ve not had one since me and dp became exclusive and stopped using condoms.
Before that I slept around a lot (was always safe) and I had a check up once a year.
Every couple of months is excessive and a strain on nhs resources.
