Tintin, Asterix and Obelix

What age child suitable for?

I read them as a child and loved them, and regard them as classics because of that and find some of the humour in the tintins hilarious... but some of it is too adult and too many poor role models and all the woman in tintin are depicted in an outlandish way and asterix is jolly violent...

Am I being precious? AIBU?!

Anyway - what age suitable for do you think?

My 10 year old loves Asterix and Obelix but he read Tintin at 7 or 8. I think he probably appreciated the humour of A and O at an older age where as Tintin was easier to enjoy at a younger age.

I'm reading Asterix with my son at the moment at bedtime, he's on omnibus 6 and LOVES them. A lot of the adult humour passes him by completely and I get a massive giggle out of the punmeister names that I didn't notice at all as a child :D It's brilliant. Extra brilliant is the recently published new Asterix stories where there's a badass female character! Looking forward to getting to that as the latant lack of awesome girls in it was offputting about the whole thing.

Tin Tin I should think is fine as well for a six year old.

Yes Asterix is pretty violent, but it's very clean violence if you get me. There's no blood or gore, people just get knocked down or up into trees and get dizzy.

My 9 year old loves Asterix but I think the language is quite hard to unpick for younger children. Haven't tried him with Tintin, perhaps I should.

I thought this was a naming options thread 😆

You're over thinking. They're stories written some time ago. Social attitudes move with time. Doesn't mean they're not still fun books. If your kids enjoy them fine. Violence in stories was often a lot less graphic. If you want violent stories try Tom & Jerry or Roadrunner, very violent but silly.

Mine also read them and I might go the other way round.

I'd say they quite liked Asterix from around 6 but were definitely missing a lot of the humour in it at that age. But then they can just go back and read them again. They liked the jokes and the colourful style and the fun in the pictures.

I think mine found Tintin less exciting at that age though. They're fine content-wise I think, but I'd say slightly older kids might be more interested in Tintin. Maybe 8 or 9 upwards. (That might just be my kids' personal taste though). With both I think they read and reread them. My DH never got rid of his!

My now 10 year old loves them and has been reading them since about age 7. He started with Tintin but now prefers Asterix. Lucky Luke too.

My dc love the batty humour in Tintin, like Captain Haddock getting drunk and jumping out of the rocket and Tintin climbing out to save him and Corealius (spelt wrong) confessing to stealing a pear when he was 4 with a happy smile when on the truth drug. They seem to get far more of the political satire in Tintin than I used to, lol. They don't get half the classical allusions in Asterix but ask what they mean. They love the puns and casual bashing. They read all of them over and over.

Ok, I am overthinking! I will buy a few more for xmas.

@Vinosaurus lol!
