If not a roast then what?

I was brought up in a home where you always had a roast on a Sunday and I’ve carried on the tradition.
However this week for a few reasons I decided to rebel and push the roast back a day to tomorrow. Instead I’m cooking tuna steaks in a chilli and garlic marinate with chargrilled tomatoes, tenderstem broccoli and sweet potato wedges. I thought I would enjoy the change but I’ve suddenly lost my appetite and I can’t help but think it’s because it’s Sunday! Maybe I just picked the wrong dish?

I rarely do a roast.

I love them and grew up in a home where there were a staple but my DP isnt fussed and DC1 doesn't like them, so it seems like a lot of effort?

We just have a normal dinner (tonight is take away Thai as we've been ill and off out food!)

I do variations of the great roast.
Lamb chops, minted new potatoes and veg or chicken, mash, veg and gravy etc.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 17/11/2019 19:22

We’ve had lasagne tonight.

Winkywoop · 17/11/2019 19:23

Variations of a roast is good

We're having harissa roasted chicken legs, roasted paprika new potatoes and carrots with roasted Mediterranean veg.

So still a lot of roasting. But not a traditional Sunday roast!

Cassoulet, maybe, with beans and sausages, or stew with dumplings - I'm feeling very autumnal-Sunday-ish

HelenaJustina · 17/11/2019 19:24

We had risotto with garlic bread and salads.
It’s lentil bolognese next Sunday.
We had a roast chicken last Sunday.
Brought up in a ‘Sunday roast’ house but am married to a vegetarian so we often don’t do the traditional on a Sunday so that I’m only cooking one meal for everyone.

madcatladyforever · 17/11/2019 19:26

I've never ever cooked a roast.

Winkywoop · 17/11/2019 19:27

Also like to do roast chicken legs with lemon, garlic and white wine. Rosemary new potatoes and green veg

Chicken legs and roasted new potatoes are your friend for a lazy roast!

Ladybirdman · 17/11/2019 19:28

We never had a roast on a Sunday but we almost always had a curry. My father would make it from scratch, grinding the spices and preparing it first thing on a Sunday morning. It would be left to cook slowly all day and we went out for the afternoon to come back to a delicious dinner.

It took me years (as a result) to learn how to do a roast but I rarely do one on a Sunday, I do a dinner that requires us all to sit around a table on a Sunday as that might be the only time in the week that we do.

Maybe my bar is very low but with teenagers and very busy 7 day a week work schedules this is our aim.

I grew up with a roast every Sunday but apart from the odd time we just have a normal dinner on sundays, I just can’t be bothered with the effort of a roast to be honest.

Finchy19 · 17/11/2019 19:31

I'll a simplified version most weeks. Chicken breast instead of a whole chicken, ready prepped veg and potato croquettes with some gravy. If we want a proper roast we got to pub, i would rather pay to not cook and wash up!

BlackSwanGreen · 17/11/2019 19:32

We have a roast most Sundays, but not today actually (too much else going on). Lasagne instead.

Aragog · 17/11/2019 19:32

We rarely have a roast dinner on a Sunday. Never have done since living at home. I don't eat meat but dh and dd do.

Today we haven't had a 'proper' meal at all as such. DH and DD had bacon, sausages and eggs made into various sandwiches for a late breakfast, I had a couple of eggs. Mid afternoon we had a 'snack' of either a toasted muffin or a couple of scotch pancakes. This evening I have just had some brie on baguette, as did dd. DH had left over fillet beef on baguette from yesterday's meal.

Aragog · 17/11/2019 19:33

Sunday though is normally a late breakfast/brunch and then later in the evening a sandwich, toasted panini, cheese on toast type meal.

Pomley · 17/11/2019 19:35

I usually do a 'light' roast, so chicken breasts rather than a whole chicken, and then just veg and potatoes rather than all of the trimmings. I only do a whole joint of meat if meals for the rest of the week include it.

Wellmet · 17/11/2019 19:35

I love a roast but rarely bother cooking them!
I tend to go for something equally satisfy...lasagne, pie and mash, meatballs...today we've had enchiladas.
Generally something stodgy!

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 17/11/2019 19:36

I also grew up in a home with a roast and a dessert every Sunday. I now live overseas with a foreign DH but I do try to cook a roast regularly. We have some expat friends who come over once a month for roast and games (and a shit load of good wine!). DH was away this week so I welcomed him home tonight with roast boneless lamb shoulder, roast potatoes and squash, squash and celeriac mash, braised leeks and broccoli. We hVe enough for leftovers for a couple of days.

MummytoCSJH · 17/11/2019 19:47

We always have a roast on a Sunday, it feels wrong without one Sad

Bloodybridget · 17/11/2019 19:52

We had lamb noisettes with roasted root vegetables and spinach this evening. Just like a roast, but much quicker!

TheElfFellOffTheShelf · 17/11/2019 19:56

We had fish, new potatoes and cauli/broccoli cheesey bake today.

Most weeks we have a nice meal on a Sunday (as opposed to quick ready meals or stuff from a can or s'thing quick) but the closest we ever get to a roast dinner is pie, mash, roast roots and steamed veg. It's notice but it's a bit dull week in, week out.

We have enchiladas, fajitas or quesadillas, stew or curry and naan, chilli or home-made soup, fancy burgers or pulled "pork" sandwiches, kebab on a naan or just plain old sausages and mash.

Impatientwino · 17/11/2019 20:01

We usually have a roast on a Sunday in the colder months. Both the DC eat all elements so it's an easy way of giving them loads of veg. DS1 adores Yorkshire pudding so we've developed a rather bad habit of having them with any roast which I know is frowned upon! I'm raising heathens! Grin

Today was slow cooked gammon with goose fat roasties, the afore mentioned Yorkshire puddings, the first parsnips from the garden and red cabbage plus broccoli, carrots and peas.

I always make enough for the children to have the same tea again tomorrow - Mondays are crazy busy for us all and my longest day at work so it's good to be able to have meat and potatoes (and yorkies!) ready that I or DH can just bung a frozen veg microwave bag with. It's also stopped me tidying up the leftovers a bit later in the evening which is a good thing!

lookatthebabypenguin · 17/11/2019 20:04

Pizza Grin

PurplePuffinPicker · 17/11/2019 20:09

Pork or sausages in cider stew, with mash. Or chicken pieces, veg & potatoes in a tray bake. Toad in the hole with both sausages and veg sticks as the toads.

DrCoconut · 17/11/2019 20:17

Tinned ravioli on toast today. It's been a busy day with not much time for cooking.

mbosnz · 17/11/2019 20:19

We're doing a Tuscan beef ragu with pappadelle(sic), with sticky date toffee pudding for afters. If my youngest ever gets out of the bloody shower. [breaks teeth grinding them]

user1471449295 · 17/11/2019 20:43

We had sausages and mashed potato today.
Probably only do a roast once a month.
Op do you have a roast every Sunday in the summer too? We can’t bare them in the summer
