If not a roast then what?

I was brought up in a home where you always had a roast on a Sunday and I’ve carried on the tradition.
However this week for a few reasons I decided to rebel and push the roast back a day to tomorrow. Instead I’m cooking tuna steaks in a chilli and garlic marinate with chargrilled tomatoes, tenderstem broccoli and sweet potato wedges. I thought I would enjoy the change but I’ve suddenly lost my appetite and I can’t help but think it’s because it’s Sunday! Maybe I just picked the wrong dish?

We only have a roast about twice a year, DH and DS aren't keen on them. So Sunday evening can be anything, same as all the other nights of the week. We had enchiladas tonight.

Likethebattle · 17/11/2019 20:47

I never have a appetite on a Sunday (no idea why) so tonight I made chicken noodle soup.

GinisLife · 17/11/2019 20:58

Burgers and hot dogs tonight in the frying pan - but then I don't have any electricity in the kitchen because I can't trace what's tripping the fuse board so the oven won't work. Had to light the gas job with a match. Roast usually. Plan was lamb shanks tonight.

We almost always have a roast on sundays, although now 3 out of 4 are vegetarian I obviously dont roast a joint. We still have roast potatoes, lots of veggies, stuffing and Yorkshire puddings, I just do a chicken breast for ds1, and me,dp and ds2 have something like vegan sausage rolls, nut cutlets etc. Sundays without a proper stodgy dinner just dont feel right 😁

ItsNovemberNotChristmas · 17/11/2019 21:03

We either cook a roast or go out for a roast every Sunday, it's my favourite meal and I'd have it every day if I could.

Today we've had lamb, roast potatoes, mashed potatoes, honey glazed parsnips and carrots, broccoli, Yorkshire puddings and gravy...with lashings of mint sauce

Biancadelrioisback · 17/11/2019 21:06

We always do roasts, lasagna, toad to in the hole, mince and dumplings or similar. Always just a big family meal

NeedAnExpert · 17/11/2019 21:17

Do maybe 2-3 roasts a year.

Today had cheese curry. Yum.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 17/11/2019 21:22

I love a traditional Sunday roast but my family is not bothered at all so I rarely do one.

Chilledout11 · 17/11/2019 21:25

I usually cook a roast chicken or pork fillet (stuffed) but otherwise steak and chips (quicker) or beef casserole or something in the winter.
I do think Sundays are nice when you have a roast and buy the papers etc

underneaththeash · 17/11/2019 21:27

We always have roast in a Sunday. Nothing else seems quite right in the winter - although it can be swapped for a BBQ in the summer .

MondeoFan · 17/11/2019 21:27

I do a roast every Sunday unless it's a super hot day like 30 degrees.
I vary the meat from chicken, gammon, beef or lamb.
If we go out on a Sunday I tend to put jacket potatoes in the oven to have with tuna or beans and cheese and we will still have the roast but on the Monday instead

weegiemum · 17/11/2019 22:11

We have what I can only describe as "roast-lite". Never beef or lamb or pork. Never a full chicken. But gammon (inevitably slow-cooked in coke!) or chicken breasts wrapped in bacon, or posh sausages (sometimes slow cooked in red wine, other times just on their own). With all the roast trimmings though - mash, roast spuds, several vegetables, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puds whatever the meat is, stuffing. Usually do enough that there's meat left over for Monday or Tuesday (home-made gammon and chicken pie is well received), plus enough generally for dh to take to work for his on-call shift on Monday night.

It's one meal in the week that we all make the effort to be there for (dc are 16, 17, 19) and had become a right of passage for boy/girl friends - when it's serious enough to be asked to stay for Sunday dinner you know it's serious! Dd1 is 19, almost 20 and she and her boyfriend have been living with us since July. This weekend she's away to visit a school friend at uni in another city - her boyfriend made the effort to be home in time to help with dinner!!

So I love a Sunday dinner. Even though I'd like roast beef sometimes but dh doesn't like it much. And I'll let Auntie Bessie deal with the Yorkshire puddings!!

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 17/11/2019 22:16

I do a roast if dh is off but if he's working I often do a stew or casserole as it has that comforting feel to it but keeps hot or reheats nicely when he gets in.

shellysheridan · 17/11/2019 23:16

I love a roast but with young kids it's hard to do one regularly as we're so busy. But I honestly don't know how they take more time than lasagne or shepherds pie?
Quick dinners for us are things like stir fry, sausage and mash

Proseccoagain · 18/11/2019 09:22

Even though I'm on my own now, I usually do myself a mini-roast on a Sunday. I'll do pork or lamb chops or a chicken leg with roast potatoes and veg. Always a home made Yorkshire Pudding (I batch cook a dozen at a time, freeze them, and just get the one out as and when). Frozen veg and instant gravy. Doesn't take long.
Just doesn't seem 'right' to have anything else!

OlaEliza · 18/11/2019 09:51

I had some bolognaise left over so stuffed it in peppers and cooked in the oven. Served with rice with sweetcorn in, cooked with a stockcube and cucumber sticks. I made it up out of what we had.

Next week I'm doing a full roast though with stuffing and yorkies. Just have to decide which meat.

caperplips · 18/11/2019 11:06

We had Chinese takeaway last night as we had an event t attend so picked it up on the way home.

Tonight though we will have peri peri spatchcock chicken with baked potatoes and salad so sort of a roast.

I love a proper roast dinner but teen dd has gone off them so I can't be bothered making it and then the faff of something else for her so for now we've given up on them, till Christmas day!
