No I mean like a casserole pot with a lid.
Big Pyrex if you have it.
You need a lid to stop it drying out.

Don't risk it. Keep the frozen chicken in the freezer for another day and pop to the shops and buy something that you can cook without ending up with food poisoning.

BentNeckLady · 17/11/2019 12:19

You can cooks chickens from frozen in a slow cooker.

teabagleftin · 17/11/2019 12:19

You can in an instant pot
Wouldn’t risk it in an oven

Malyshek · 17/11/2019 12:25

I'm confused. Why don't you want to defrost it first ? Just leave it overnight in the fridge and you can cook it tomorrow, or put it in a sealed bag then in warm water for a couple of hours if you are in a hurry...

Hisdoeherbuck · 17/11/2019 12:30

I do it all the time, cook it low and slow, for 3 hrs, then bump up the temp for another 30 minutes.

It’s not dangerous as long as you are paying attention to what you are doing

Stupiddriver1 · 17/11/2019 12:32

Well just follow the Iceland instructions. The chicken doesn’t know it was sold in M&S and not Iceland. I still wouldn’t do it, I always thought it was a big no no.

TheQueef · 17/11/2019 12:33

The advice about food poisoning is outdated.
Provided you cook it evenly and thoroughly it's safe, especially with the rise of meat thermometer use.
It's riskier partially defrosting.

I cook from frozen regularly. I like to use those oven bags but the plastic....

Nyctophyllia · 17/11/2019 12:36

I've done it before, you can def buy cook from frozen ones
Its glaringly obvious when chicken isn't cooked properly, just use common sense, juices running clear, no pink bits

SmudgeButt · 17/11/2019 12:55

The only reason I would thaw it is to get rid of any excess fat clumps that whole chicken often seem to have. I suspect it would roast better if thawed but as long as it's fully cooked, no pink juices etc then there shouldn't be a problem.

(been cooking against the rules for decades and haven't killed anyone yet. sometimes I wish I had.)

TheQueens · 17/11/2019 13:01

I wouldn't! Especially not in a slow cooker! Will take far to long to cook and chicken will be sat in danger zone (5-63 degrees) for a long time! Defrost it overnight for tomorrow and have something different today.

Chewbecca · 17/11/2019 13:05

Donald Russell (whose food I really rate and trust) sell a cook from frozen turkey.

So I would cook from frozen but only in accordance with pack instructions.

CatUnderTheStairs · 17/11/2019 13:09

Definitely not in a slow cooker. It doesn’t get the meat hot enough.

Just no. This is one of cooking basic rules.Nwver cook.a chicken from frozen.

Other joints of meat can be cooked from frozen as beef for example is safe to eat rarw in the middle.
A chicken just does not work the same. The inside would be frozen still.whikst the outside overcooked and dried out.
There isn't a safe fast way to defrost a chicken either.
Just no unless you fancy spending alot of time in your bathroom feeling like the stuff that will be dropping out of you at a great speed!

Seems it's now regarded as ok to cook a chicken from frozen, if instructions/timings are correctly followed.

Evilmorty · 17/11/2019 13:33

I think the cook from frozen ones are partially cooked already. They aren’t in raw frozen state to begin wit

TheQueef · 17/11/2019 13:34

Hmm it tells you on the pack it's raw Morty
It's just frozen nothing special done to it.

Hurdygurdy24 · 17/11/2019 13:38

What a load of crap.

As others, I have done this loads of times. Use common sense and it’s fine.

Lower heat than usual for a couple of hours then crank it up at the end. Make sure it’s cooked right through and that juices run clear

Evilmorty · 17/11/2019 13:40

Yes it will still be semi raw but it has been partially cooked to kill at least some of the bugs. That’s they it says contains raw chicken, it does still contain raw parts.

TheQueef · 17/11/2019 13:43

Sorry Mort but that is rhubarb.
Have a look in the freezer next time you shop, they aren't partially cooked its just a frozen raw chicken.

Reallybadidea · 17/11/2019 13:46

Every day is a school day on Mumsnet! Who knew you could do this! Not 100% sure whether I'd be willing to eat it, I've been thoroughly indoctrinated that it's not safe. Might try it on the kids first and see!

Evilmorty · 17/11/2019 13:48

I don’t buy it myself. But the cooking time on the Iceland website does not look to be 1.5x a defrosted chicken so how are they getting it to the right temp in the time required unless it has had some pretreatment?

Lulualla · 17/11/2019 13:49

The number of people on here with actually no idea but all shouting "don't do it". Really?

You can cook any whole joint from frozen. Just add 50% onto the cooking time. So if it would take 2 hours to cook from fresh then it takes 3 hours from frozen.

Cooking a chicken from frozen is fine.
