He was prescribed them this week and has taken his first pill today and is being very dramatic.

Surely one pill wouldn't make that much difference...?

First one my husband took made him trippy. It took a few days to settle

Frownette · 16/11/2019 14:15

Ah ok, thanks - I'll be more patient then

I don't think he will have been prescribed 500mg as the maximum dose is 200mg (and I think the maximum dose tablet is 100mg).

I felt odd and nauseous after taking my first tablet, but his erratic behaviour may be down to his depression / anxiety rather than the medication itself

I just went and found them, it's 50mg sorry Blush

The maximum is 200mg. Yes it can make you feel very weird.

2littleChicks · 16/11/2019 14:17

Well he wouldn't be prescribed 500mg as the uppermost dose is 200mg.
200mg by itself without building up to it can be quite trippy. And if he's mistakenly taken 500mg then yes he's probably going to feel very unwell.

gwhizz75 · 16/11/2019 14:17

Yeah it would be pretty worrying if he was on 500mg - do you mean 50mg?

suesylvesterr · 16/11/2019 14:17

Yeah, no...

Highest dose is 200mg. No doctor would prescribe higher than that. Hmm

MrsMaiselsMuff · 16/11/2019 14:17

Normal to feel weird when first taking them.

As above, 500mg is definitely not the right dosage. Could it be 50mg?

GeometricGiraffes · 16/11/2019 14:19

I was very spaced out when I started my sertraline. I had jaw tremors. Couldn't keep my eyes open and involuntary muscle spasms.

By the way its 50mg.

GeometricGiraffes · 16/11/2019 14:20

You don't sound like a very supportive friend tbh...

Herewego93 · 16/11/2019 14:25

They made me feel really drunk for like a week then I was spaced out all the time walking into stuff and having extreme highs where I'd buy loads and guy money to homeless people. Came off them in the end as wasn't right. It takes a good week to start feeling normal on these. My experience anyway my partner also took one to see what the fuss was about and felt out of it too.

Frownette · 16/11/2019 14:31

@Herewego93 so it had an impact on you immediately? I don't think I'd want to try one!

I wanted to know what to expect really but I'm here all weekend so will cook and can reassure him it's not that unusual.

ohmysoul · 16/11/2019 14:33

I felt drunk when I started them too and extremely spaced out. It was within 12 hours of my first tablet.

AlunWynsKnee · 16/11/2019 14:34

Try taking them before bed so you sleep through the trippy feeling.

Frownette · 16/11/2019 14:39

I think his GP told him to take them in the morning; I've asked him to have a lie down for now and will speak to him when he's up. He's going to need to cut down on alcohol.

Blimey this might be a rollercoaster few days

Littleem1983 · 16/11/2019 14:43

I started on 50mg for postnatal anxiety. First few pills had me so out of it. Hubby took a week holiday off work to help with kids whilst I settled. Please don't say someone who has started ADs is "being dramatic". It won't help in their recovery at all.

HarrietTheFly · 16/11/2019 14:43

I felt no effects at all when I took sertraline which is odd as I'm usually an over -reacter when it comes to medication. If there's a side effect I tend to get it, and usually I get it quickly. But with sertraline nothing.

oohnicevase · 16/11/2019 14:49

Drinking alcohol and taking anti depressants is a recipe for disaster.. up and down every 24 hours .. he needs to stop drinking surely!

HoldMyLobster · 16/11/2019 14:54

When DD's sertraline prescription was increased she was dizzy and shaky for a few days. Some people react to medications more than others, and she's definitely one of them.

Babyroobs · 16/11/2019 14:55

The first couple of weeks are horrible. I'm glad I was signed off sick as would not have been able to cope with work.

AlunWynsKnee · 16/11/2019 15:02

Yes they do say to take it in the morning but that didn't agree with me so I took it at night and told the GP that's what I was doing.

Frownette · 16/11/2019 15:04

@Babyroobs did you find they helped after the initial period?

I'm trying to think of the pitfalls: drinking, gambling, not eating until midday then eating crap. I've never policed him before.

It's a friend, not boyfriend (only my boyfriend is my boyfriend) and he's quite stubborn but I'll do as best I can.

woogal · 16/11/2019 15:06

I felt sick on the 50mg tablets so took them at night so I slept through the side effects. It stopped after a week.

Babyroobs · 16/11/2019 15:17

Frownette - Yes I felt much better after a couple of weeks although I have been on them since mid July now and I still get some side effects like headaches, tremor and insomnia but generally my mood is so much better that it feels as though those side effects are worth it.
