I listen to a lot of audio books, mostly ya fantasy. I'm ill and they give me a lot of entertainment and escapism. I've worked through a lot of the more commonly recommended ones though so thought I'd ask here for help, please? Might give others some ideas too.

I've "read"
All Cassandra Clare's shadowhunter books
Leigh bardugo's grishaverse trilogy, six of crows duology and ninth house
Sarah J Maas throne of glass and court of thorns and roses series
These 3 authors' books have been my favourite to listen to.

Richelle Mead vampire academy
Laini Taylor Daughter of smoke and bone (only the first, wasn't my favourite)
Patrick Rothfuss name of the wind and wise man's fear
Marie Lu Warcross duology
Jeanine Frost Night huntress series (a lot of sex though!)
Jonathan Stroud Lockwood &co series
Maggie Stiefvater scorpio races, raven boys series, wolves of mercy falls series
Holly Black Curse workers series, Folk of the air
Sally green half bad
Angie Sage Septimus Heap series
Julie Kagawa shadow of the fox
Pittacus Lore series
Mortal engines
Alex sparrow time riders
Melissa Marr Wicked Lovely series
All of Joss Stirling's available in audio (sadly not many)
Twilight, hunger games, maze runner, Harry Potter, Inheritance cycle, dark materials, a lot of Terry Pratchett
And a fair few more but these are most of the recent ones I can remember/find on my audio libraries... Thanks!

Marie Lu’s Legend trilogy?

Victoria Aveyard’s Red Queen series

(Lots there for me to add to my list, thanks!)

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 13/11/2019 21:43

I always recommend Patrick Ness's Chaos Walking trilogy. The first one's The Knife of Never Letting Go. My favourite YA fiction.

What about Neil Gaiman?

Kokapetl · 13/11/2019 21:47

Any of Tamora Pierce's books
Also Mercedes Lackey

If Sarah Maas is a favourite then definitely the Old Kingdom novels by Garth Nix ... feisty strong female lead characters, brilliant world-building.

BringMeThatHorizon · 13/11/2019 21:49

How about...

A Darker Shade of Magic, V. E. Schwab
Book of the Ancestor, Mark Lawrence
The Priory of the Orange Tree, Samantha Shannon
Red Queen, Victoria Aveyard
The Nevernight Chronicles, Jay Kristoff
Red Rising, Pierce Brown
The Tearling trilogy, Erika Johansen

NoSquirrels · 13/11/2019 21:50

Ooh, also Kendare Blake’s Three Dark Crowns series.

Moominfan · 13/11/2019 21:50

Noughts and crosses majorie Blackman

SupportHuman · 13/11/2019 21:50

The Fablehaven series, Brandon Mull (and if you like it, the Dragon watch series that follows on)

theproudgeek · 13/11/2019 21:51

I missed my stop on the train reading the Newsflesh trilogy by Mira Grant, not sure if its YA but certainly the age of the protagonists fit.

Francis Hardinge is also excellent although she tends to do standalones.

badgermushrooms · 13/11/2019 21:51

If you enjoyed the Patrick Rothfuss books, there's an excellent novella set in the same world with some of the same characters, The Slow Regard of Silent Things.

I think you might also enjoy Naomi Novik - Tangled and Spinning Silver. (She's also written lots of books about Napoleonic dragons which I'm currently working my way through and loving - but they have a very different feel to them.)

Sadik · 13/11/2019 21:52

I also like Cassandra Clare, & have read lots of the others on your list. Other things I've enjoyed

  • the Night School books by CJ Daugherty (not fantasy exactly, but hit that same spot)
  • second the Garth Nix Old Kingdom series
  • Frances Hardinge, particularly Fly By Night & the sequel Twilight Robbery and also A Face Like Glass
Echobelly · 13/11/2019 21:52

Lian Hearn's Otori Trilogy - dunno if it's quite YA there's some (tasteful and poetic) sex, but it's in that vein and a wonderful read.

Fruitteatime · 13/11/2019 21:54

This year of discovered Neal Shusterman, I particularly like the Scythe trilogy and the Unwind series. I'd say they are dystopian rather than fantasy. I need to see if any from your list are available at the library, great to have recommendations.

Sadik · 13/11/2019 21:54

Lots of cross posting.

I'd add all of Gail Carriger's steampunk books. Her Parasol Protectorate aren't marketed as YA (due to too much sex Grin ) but are still fun light reads in the same way. Her Finishing School series set in the same world are YA though.

SargeantAngua · 13/11/2019 22:01

Thank you all so much! So many ideas to look up on the library app and audible. Only a couple of books have been mentioned that I've listened to a bit of and not liked too. The Nevernight Chronicles are on my list but the wait for them on the library service is long. Glad they're worth waiting for though. I'll put a hold on them. I've come across Patrick Ness' books on there too I think but not tried them.

Melinda Salisbury - song of sorrow
Lauren Oliver - delirium
Kiera Cass - the selection
Alwyn Hamilton - rebel of the sands

All series! Hope that helps - Scythe series is very good as well and the latest has just been released, The Toll.

adaline · 13/11/2019 22:04

Any Neil Gaiman book.
The Dark is Rising (I forget the author)
Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams.

Have you read Philip Pullmans other books eg. The Tin Princess featuring Sally Lockhart? They're very good imo.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 13/11/2019 22:30

Ooh yes I’ve just read and enjoyed the Nevernight Chronicles.

Also Mark Lawrence - Red Sister series
Joe Abercrombie - Half a King
Brian Stavely - Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne
Loan Hearn - Across the Nightingale Floor

gingajewel · 13/11/2019 22:33

Lots of recommendations for me here too! Thanks op

tilder · 13/11/2019 22:40

Thank you for this thread! Massively helpful. Its chat though, so will disappear after a bit. How do I save it?

Plus, might have missed it above but Earthsea and Diane Wynn Jones all popular here. Plus David Eddings.

TheNestedIf · 13/11/2019 22:47

It's not strictly Young Adult but you might like the Necroscope series by Brian Lumley.

ThisBear · 13/11/2019 22:55

Any of VE Schwab's books
The Belles by Dhonielle Clayton

SargeantAngua · 14/11/2019 00:00

Thanks again, so many to look up, and I'm glad others have found it useful - I've trawled old threads before in search of ideas (and I'm glad I'm not the alone in having enjoyed The Selection series Pashmina!)

Not YA, but ds got me into them, and not quite fantasy, but half way there, as it's set in our world, can I recommend the Dresden Files by Jim Butcher? I've read them all three or four times. Ds tells me his Codex Alera is a great series as well.

TaurielTest · 14/11/2019 00:23

I bet you'd love Vic James Dark Gifts trilogy.
