Moving from iPhone to Samsung- how to choose?!

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 15:34

I've never had anything other than an iPhone since the days of when a Blackberry was a big thing so I'm feeling a bit nervous. I've no idea which model to choose. Price limit (contract) isn't very high so nothing super new or top of the range, but looking for a good camera as I find the iPhone ones awful after a little use.

Any advice greatly appreciated thank you :)

Why a Samsung in particular?

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 15:42

what's your budget OP? I've had Samsung before and DH and DS1 currently still do. I now have a Huawei. If you aren't into having the latest, then the S7 or S8 will be probably perfectly good enough. I have a P20 Pro for the camera which was top of the line at the time I got it.

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 15:44

I was looking at the Huawei and it does look good but my friend's husband works in civil services and isn't allowed that brand of phone as they are easy to hack- so it's made me quite cautious of those.

I hadn't heard that but then Samsung just had their own scandal about fingerprint ID so I guess no-one is immune. I've had mine for a year and a half and haven't had any issues at all plus I have nothing to hide :o

Shosha1 · 10/11/2019 15:52

I moved from iPhone to samsung s9 last month. So did DDIL. We both hate it. I am trying to get used to it, but DDIL is using her old iPhone.

It us very different to iphone. Only good thing about it is it's cheaper and the screen is bigger .

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 15:56

A colleague of mine moved from iphone to samsung and loved it. I guess it really depends what you are used to and what you like.

I don't really like apple stuff to be honest. I find it counter intuitive but loads of folk think the opposite. It would be good to be able to have a trial run if possible :)

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 15:56

That's also true. :) I know Apple is good for security and generally I like iPhones- I have a Mac and an iPad etc but I don't even bother taking pictures anymore as they all come out fuzzy and it annoys me. I have three young children so like to take pictures. This camera thing has happened with every single iPhone I've ever had, not sure if the camera lens is getting scratched or something because lots of people take better pictures with them than me.

I pay just under 40 on my current contract, wouldn't mind keeping it at that or less.

I love Samsung and have just moved from the S7 to the A50 and I'm really struggling with it -it's too big to use one-handed! Camera is good though

Hoolihan · 10/11/2019 16:02

I've got an Galaxy S10e which is great and not expensive on contract. When I had a problem with my previous Samsung phone they sent a man in a van to fix it on the doorstep, for free. Really great customer service.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 16:03

Go onto one of the price comparison sites and see what you can get. Are you out of contract? How much data do you need? Do you want to stick with a particular company?

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 16:10

I'm with EE atm and I'd prefer to stick with them but I'm not overly fussy, just absolutely no Vodafone as they are awful (I was with them for years). I'd say about 4g of data as atm I have 2gb and I had to buy an add-on. My contract is up at the start of December so I'm just doing my research now. I've got an iPhone SE atm.

That's impressive Hoolihan!

Thanks for that Tilly- I was considering one of the A's but didn't realise how big they are.

I've just done it!! I was so worried I wouldn't get on as all I've had are iPhones since we all had that Nokia phone....

I got a Galaxy 10 Note - that's the one with the pointer pencil thingy in it. I wouldn't bother with the pointer thingy, you stand there pointing away at your phone and it's quicker with your fingers. I've been surprised at how user friendly it is. It probably helped that DS had one and showed me a few basics, and then told me to YouTube loads of how-to videos for that phone so I understood stuff before I made my final decision. It also meant that I worked stuff out and could set up my phone myself.

I'm now on week 3, and it's still going OK. The camera is amazing, and I've been sorting out my home screen so that it reflects how I used to have it on my old iPhone. I'm pretty happy. But first look at YouTube videos to be sure it's right for you.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 16:19

Carphone warehouse will quote for EE upgrades or just wait until contract is up and go anywhere for phone but stick with EE.

mobilephones.comparethemarket.com/phone-deals/results#/?contractLengths=&data=Any&deviceCondition=All&deviceType=&giftCategories=&handsetColours=&handsets=8a5b5c62-6a78-43ad-ae4b-14556254e7d0&includeExistingCustomers=true&includeExistingCustomersHandset=true&includeResellers=true&internalStorage=Any&isExclusiveDeal=&isFiveG=&merchants=&minutes=Any&monthlyCost=40&networks=EE&phoneCost=50&productType=handset&simType=Any&sortBy=Avg%20monthly%20cost&texts=Any&variants=

I've used affordable mobiles before and had no issues. Mine is currently from mobile phones direct I think but it's still part of my overall account with EE and I still swap data betwen all our phones. I have 30gb and Ds1 has 10, so when DH and DS2 moved to sim only, they just have the smallest data possible, I think maybe 1gb and we share mine out as I only use 2-3gb a month.

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 16:30

Thank you.

A few years ago I ordered something different- I think it might have been some Google Pixel phone I think it was- and I absolutely despised it, so I returned it to EE within the timeframe. I am happy to do that again as EE made the process very easy (they collected it from my house and brought me a new one the next day), but obviously I don't want loads of faffing.

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 16:36

DS2 has an SE which he is unwilling to part with.

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 16:39

Youtube videos- that's a great idea! Not sure why I hadn't thought of it. Thank you :) I don't really have time to go try them out in shops, so this might help.

Completely different suggestion here. My wife and I each have a Wiley Fox Swift 2X. We bought them outright for about £120 each new. So not on contract - we use Giffgaff and have a recurring goodybag each month but since they're unlocked they will work with any network using PAYG.
Full HD screen, fingerprint sensor, NFC - I pay with my phone more often than I do with card/cash. Main camera pretty good imo.
Worth considering, I think.

Reallybadidea · 10/11/2019 16:57

I would definitely buy a phone outright with a separate sim only. For instance you can get a Samsung galaxy s10 from amazon for £593 and a virgin sim only deal (they use the ee network) for £9 a month. Over 2 years that works out as £809 which is considerably less than £40 a month over the same period.

Reallybadidea · 10/11/2019 16:58

Meant to say that a £9 sim is for 5gb.

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 17:02

I'm a single mum on a zero hours contract, I don't have that amount of money outright unfortunately.

Apileofballyhoo · 10/11/2019 17:02

DH swears by the camera on Sony phones.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/11/2019 18:13

Don't do it!!! I tried to move from an iPhone to a Samsung...I lasted 3 months before giving up. I'm a slave to Apple Blush

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 18:16

What didn't you like @MyGhastIsFlabbered?

OP posts:
MyGhastIsFlabbered · 10/11/2019 18:23

I just couldn't get used to the subtle differences in how you use the phone.; can't remember the exact things but think swiping left to open your phone rather than up, that sort of thing. I hadn't realised how ingrained my habits were!

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 18:37

I have face recognition so don't swipe at all :o

I get what you mean though , you need to retrain your muscle memory.
