Moving from iPhone to Samsung- how to choose?!

I've never had anything other than an iPhone since the days of when a Blackberry was a big thing so I'm feeling a bit nervous. I've no idea which model to choose. Price limit (contract) isn't very high so nothing super new or top of the range, but looking for a good camera as I find the iPhone ones awful after a little use.

Any advice greatly appreciated thank you :)

I got a Samsung S9 after my iPhone 5c finally gave up.

Honestly, it took a couple of weeks to get used to, the size being the main issue, but apart from that I prefer it to iPhones.

I don't know why, but I always felt a bit 'suffocated' by the iPhone, with the need to sync all the time and shit loads of trouble with Apple ID that had me banging my head against the wall, so I feel a bit free now.

Also, what's the fingerprint scandal mentioned on the previous page? Shock Anything to worry about? Are Samsung users on some sort of list now or something? Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 10/11/2019 19:14

Fingerprint issue as far as I remember is about using unofficial screen protectors, it then allows any fingerprint to open the phone - think it was the S10 though. Probably fine unless you have stuff on your phone that you don't want anyone with access to your phone to get hold of.

I use Apple Pay on my phone, is there an equivalent on a Samsung? I use my fingerprint for that so wouldnt want anything compromised...

I think there are a few, there is Samsung pay and Google Pay for a start but I don't use them. I'm pretty sure that the problem wasn't with the phone, it was with using cheap screen covers from ebay. I've not really read too much though as I don't have a Samsung and DH and DS have older models

PennyNotSoWise · 10/11/2019 19:30

Thanks @WaxOnFeckOff Grin Love your username.

@middlemuddle there's Google Pay for android, but I don't use it myself.

YeOldeTrout · 10/11/2019 19:40

It may actually be called 'Samsung Pay' I don't use it, but I know it's on my phone (S8, cost me maybe £230 on Ebay 8 months ago). Little DS just paid £240 for a 2nd hand P20 (Huawei) on Ebay. Middle DS has an S7 he's very happy with (paid £169 for it on Ebay about 18m ago).

Who says that Huawei's are easy to hack? Confused The controversy is about them providing entire cellphone network hardware that China could use to spy on UK security services, not individual phones.

I also have an ipod (for listening to podcasts & music) so in both worlds. I think I find Android more intuitive to use, actually.

Paying £40/month means £480/year. For how long?? Just sounds so painful. I know DH has much better deals tied to our Broadband provider. So he pays like £10/month for 3.5 GB data/month, while the phones were bought outright: huge savings over what OP is planning.

I'd really recommend the Sony Experia phones if you're thinking of getting an Android phone. They have one of the best cameras.

I've only ever had Sony phones for the last five years and will never go back to either iPhone or Samsung. My current Sony phone is almost 3 years old and still going strong. DH has had iPhones and Samsungs and by 18 months they're knackered.

Android has everything that IPhone has now like Google pay if you want to use contactless on your phone. It's not like it was 10 years ago when the android apps were poor compared to Apple.

I don’t know if we under-use our phones, but DW and I have Galaxy A50s and they do everything we want. The camera is excellent (triple lens) and we send emails, surf the net, do internet banking, use Google maps for satnav and yet it’s only a mid-range phone. It also has 128GB of memory. I suppose the only things we don’t do are stream films or play games.

We are on contract with Virgin media and for 6GB of data per month, with rollover, we are paying £19 per month each. We were going to buy the phones and go SIM only, but we couldn’t better the VM contract deal on that basis. We also both have ipads but we don’t have difficulty switching between phone and ipad

I use Apple Pay on my phone, is there an equivalent on a Samsung?

Like I said upthread, I use this facility on my Wiley Fox phone. It's linked to my credit card account. Fingerprint sensor to start the phone so quite secure (and sometimes the system asks for my PIN as well, as an extra check).

When you said upthread that you couldn't buy a phone outright, did you mean this one or the much more expensive Samsung? This one is about £120, plus your data each month. I don't use a lot (use WiFi where possible) so only pay £5.

middlemuddle · 10/11/2019 20:06

I couldn't afford £120 on a phone for a while tbh, with Christmas coming up etc it'd be maybe mid 2020 but theres no real rush I guess. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Might be worth waiting to see if there are bargains on the 2nd hand/refurb market after Christmas?

Reallybadidea · 10/11/2019 20:10

Why not go to sim only on your current phone for a few months and save up to buy a phone outright?

Reallybadidea · 10/11/2019 20:10

Once your contract ends I mean.

Autumnfresh · 10/11/2019 20:16

I hated moving to Samsung and went back to iPhone. Dh has Samsung and his photos are better and I love the new Samsung where you can write on the screen, but not enough to move again. Love my iPhone

LER83 · 10/11/2019 20:54

I think prefering samsung/iPhone is a personal thing. I've always had samsung and find them really easy to use. My husband used to have samsung then had to get an iPhone for work. He had no problem switching to an iPhone, and really likes his, but I just can not get the hang of using it! I've currently got an s9. I moved from ee to o2, and currently pay £23.99 a month contract which gives me unlimited texts, 1000 mins and I think its 2gb data.

Evanna13 · 10/11/2019 21:10

I recently switched from the iPhone to the Samsung galaxy a50. I was worried but I actually love it. The camera is fantastic compared to the iPhone. That is the main difference I notice. It is a much bigger phone but I am very happy so far and delighted that I switched.

ChinUpChestOut · 11/11/2019 15:38

The swipey bit is different to the iPhone when you move to Samsung. I admit it's taken me a good two weeks to work out how to answer a call (swipe up) as it didn't occur to me look that bit up on a YouTube video.......

So swipe down to get rid of stuff close down apps and things, and swipe up to take calls etc, show a different screen. Like I said, long term iPhone user, limited IT intelligence and I'm managing the transition. I've surprised myself.

Rowgtfc72 · 11/11/2019 20:44

I've just got an A40. Not too big and thankfully idiot proof. I'm on tesco mobile so paid outright on a sim only deal but the A40 on contract was only 13 pound a month for a basic contract with phone.
