So. Who will be the media’s Remembrance Day whipping boy this year?

Corbyn? For wearing the wrong coat/suit/tie/shoes/face?

Meghan-for being caught smiling at the wrong moment, or attention seeking for being seen at an event while there is speculation about her being pregnant?

Johnson? For not having his shirt tucked in?

William and/or Harry for not publicly embracing?

Kate? For something- can’t think what. Too many poppies? Wearing a headband?

boris looked a mess. he couldn't even stand still in the silence

Which is why the BBC showed footage of him on Breakfast this morn laying a wreath taken from 2016. Appalling bias.

They tried to fob it off as a mistake. Yeah right... so someone accidentally went to the archives from 3 years ago and accidentally spliced the footage of him laying the wreath (different colour, wreath was green) and accidentally inserted it into the footage. Instead of showing him looking like an overstuffed pillow and laying the wreath upside down. Like we wouldn't notice Hmm

CoolCarrie · 11/11/2019 18:23

Johnson could have buttoned up his bloody coat, scruffy bastard, even on a somber day like that he looked a mess.

CoolCarrie · 11/11/2019 19:00

Like an earlier poster I was in tears at the Chindit men, to see those old men get out of their wheelchairs and walk to show their respects was humbling and very moving, that is bravery, that is respect and that is sheer determination, unlike Johnston and many of his ilk.

My FIL was a Chindit - sorry, just had to tell you!

milveycrohn · 11/11/2019 19:30

Johnson was criticised in the press for having his coat undone.
Corbyn did not bow - just a slight inclination of the head. Compared to last year, his coat this year was fine; better than last year's anorak.
(After the fuss made of Foot's donkey jacket, he should have known better than to wear an anorak)
Swinson looked exemplary. A long black coat was ideal, and she managed just fine in those high heels.
The new lot - I think the Crown Dependencies - the woman at the end was clearly nervous, and kept looking along the line to make sure they all stepped forward together, etc - understandable I guess.
Note. According to Dimbleby, it was their first time of being at the cenotaph.
If you were watching for the first time, you would need someone like Dimbleby to explain who they all were, as in some cases it was rather confusing.
I suspect all the former Prime Ministers, Blair, Cameron, May, etc all disliked having to walk side by side, but I can't say I noticed anything untoward about any of them.

CoolCarrie · 11/11/2019 19:57

Kbear you have every right to be proud of your fil.

Idratherplayherewithallthemadn · 11/11/2019 19:58

The difference with corybn turning up last year in an old anorak is that he is the leader of the opposition.
He is notoriously anti war, anti army etc and has written about use of British troops in ww2. So as leader of opposition who may one day be in a war situation it all shows utter contempt and for the veterans.
Thankfully this year he has been obviously forced into a smarter coat.

It's rather sad though as he stands there, his own party is the hot bed of Vile nasty racism, his lack of action and his actions have led to rabbis calling out to the UK public, blaming him, corybn and saying they do not feel safe and will leave the UK if he gets in.

That's very poignant and sad. I find people with views as entrenched like Corbyns, he won't even accept or realise what is wrong.

Dyrne · 11/11/2019 20:01

Kbear such brave men, operating so far behind enemy lines in awful conditions. People like your FIL are amazing!

milveycrohn I can’t believe I’m still defending Corbyn, but he looked like he was genuinely reflecting on the moment - he bowed his head down for a good amount of time, almost like he was saying a prayer. To me that’s still showing respect. To hear the criticism you’d think he did a quick jerky movement but quite the opposite.

And I don’t mind the small cock ups or nervousness; that’s understandable given the crowds and the media attention. Things like Corbyn smartening up and Boris looking round gormlessly can be helped, however. I’m glad Corbyn took on board the comments from last year. The jacket he wore last year is a perfectly fine, serviceable jacket - but was definitely not appropriate for the occasion.

Stonerosie67 · 11/11/2019 20:38

KBear's FIL...we salute you Sir

Totally agree with everything CoolCarrie has written here, I came on to say exactly the same!

FaFoutis · 11/11/2019 20:48

Idratherplayherewithallthemadn
This is a thread about media bias. Consider why you believe those things.

ForalltheSaints · 11/11/2019 21:21

I have long felt that politicians should either not be a part of the Cenotaph, or maybe just one such as the Speaker or longest serving MP represent them. Or perhaps one who has actually been in the Forces when younger.

Earlier today I was at the Arc de Triomphe where the French remembrance was much simpler, and the wreath laying at 11am was just the President.

Gingernaut · 11/11/2019 21:22

BBC

Apparently showed footage of Boris last year.

Dapplegrey · 11/11/2019 21:30

Hopefully the bellend I just saw calmly stroll out with the poppy box under his arm, full of coins, in my local Waitrose in central London.

That’s awful. Did anyone try and stop him?

TheNavigator · 11/11/2019 21:37

(After the fuss made of Foot's donkey jacket, he should have known better than to wear an anorak)

I have to say it - I am compelled to say it every time this comes up - and it does every year.

Michael Foot did not wear a donkey jacket.

It was a nasty right wing slur and a very early example of fake news. It is a documented lie and it is still spouted as truth. Still ! After all this time.
one article - there are many

BertrandRussell · 11/11/2019 21:55

And it wasn’t an “old anorak” either!

It is fascinating how Johnson’s behaviour appear to have been completely passed over. Nothing seems to stick to Tories!

The Sun photoshopped an actual veteran out of photos to make Corbyn look like he was taking a jaunty stroll.

Sorry I have no idea how to do a link.

@Patroclus @Roussette

It’s always good to establish the facts first.

So. Who will be the media’s Remembrance Day whipping boy this year?
noblegiraffe · 12/11/2019 00:23

I saw a video of Johnson starting to walk to put his wreath down at the wrong time and having to shuffle back into line and wait.

Corbyn had a much better coat this year and a reasonable sized poppy - remember it was too small before.

milveycrohn · 12/11/2019 06:59

I am a bit confused by the 2016 reference, as for some peculiar reason, I actually watched the Remembrance Service TWICE!!!.
Once live at 11.00 am, and then later in the evening.
Johnson started to move too early, but you could see it was the current 2019 event, as he was in the Prime Minister position, and was laying his wreath in the correct spot.
(They all have their alocated spots).

ThePolishWombat · 12/11/2019 07:17

Meghan’s hat wasn’t formal enough

They can fuck off with that.
An almost identical hat was perfectly formal enough back in 1990-something when Diana wore it at the Cenotaph Hmm

BertrandRussell · 12/11/2019 07:21

Oh, don’t say that! The next headline will be “Meghan in bizarre attempt to ape the People’s Princess” Grin

Roussette · 12/11/2019 07:36

EnFinale And you believe that?

Go elsewhere and you will find conflicting reports on this, from ex BBC employees who have worked in the Newsroom. There has been too much lately from them for me not to be cynical.

PegHughes · 12/11/2019 08:07

EnFinale I'd find it much easier to believe that explanation if Johnson hadn't been conspicuously a bit untidy and inept.
Actually, I don't mind people being less than pristine and/or getting things a bit wrong. It's human and in no way lacking respect. It's the dishonesty and double standards that are annoying here. If Corbyn had done what Johnson did, the press would have (gleefully) gone to town.

It's just a little bit too convenient that the wrong footage was used, don't you think?

Roussette · 12/11/2019 08:13

Yes, very convenient. And laid the wreath upside down.
Look how last year the BBC transposed a picture of Corbyn, adjusted his hat to make it look more 'Russian' and put his face in front of a picture of Red Square.

I question BBC impartiality at the moment, and don't trust them the same as I used to.

PegHughes · 12/11/2019 08:20

I question BBC impartiality at the moment

Yes, I'm there too and I find it rather sad because it used to be my first port of call for news. I grew up believing in the integrity of the BBC but the last few years have made me question and doubt.

It pains me to say it but I just don't trust the BBC anymore.
