wohmum · 08/11/2019 22:44

Mine helped at a local Foodbank .

lljkk · 08/11/2019 22:52

Dug over and replanted the elderly neighbours garden

How was that accepted? I thought it had to be for a formal organisation.

School puts on huge musicals that raise funds : DD's voluntering was being in the chorus. 2-3 hours Almost every Saturday for 7 months. DS is about to start volunteering at a wildlife shelter (silver, he can double up and have 'animal husbandry' as his skill from that, too). Anti-bullying group at school (bronze).

we’re struggling with ds2 as he’s not old enough to be a Young Leader or Volunteer at Scouts as he’s still 13. They need to be 14and a half to be Scouting
They need to be 14, not 14 and 1/2, but, this thread - which gets asked regularly on MN - shows why DofE say they should be 14 to start.
The '13' is an 'exception' in case they can join an expedition with their friends or something, not the usual age to sign up.
Some schools are poor in trying to start this in Year 9 rather than 10

ineedaholidaynow · 08/11/2019 22:55

DS became an Explorer Scout at 14 and I am sure he became a Young Leader at the same time

2Rebecca · 08/11/2019 22:57

Helped at the kayaking group he normally went to. Most schools have mentoring programmes kids can help at too

guessmyusername · 08/11/2019 22:59

Rainbows and Brownies and loved it so much is now an adult leader

Apolloanddaphne · 08/11/2019 23:23

Cornishmum00 · 08/11/2019 23:34

Local charity shop

Lyingonthesofainthedark · 08/11/2019 23:49

Litter picking at the last minute! Lots of.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 08/11/2019 23:51

Mine was also an army cadet so he used that as his volunteering - they raised money for Macmillan and sold poppies as well as the usual cadet stuff.

PandaG · 08/11/2019 23:57

Volunteered at our church Sunday school - six years and counting!
Others I know of - park run, charity shops, cubs/rainbows/brownies. Sports coaching etc. 30+ years ago I visited a local elderly lady, cleaned her brass ornaments as she didn't have the strength left to polish them, but more importantly chatted witg her for a couple of hours a week. I went in a pair with a friend, so we were never on our own...don't know if it would be allowed today but the woman seemed to really appreciate our company, and I enjoyed spending time with her.

MsPepperPotts · 09/11/2019 00:04

My DGS volunteered at Riding For The Disabled...He loved it!

SpringFan · 09/11/2019 00:09

One worked in charity shop silver and bronze. Also did some work with local nature group. Weekly work clearing scrub, building new artificial badger sett.
Other DC volunteered at library reading scheme and also helped at local cubs. Carried that on after he completed gold until he went to Uni.
I thought you had to be over 14 to do DOE

sansou · 09/11/2019 00:09

Y10 - Bronze - cleaning/painting duties at the air cadets'
Y11 - Silver - Parkrun - currently half way through

SunshineDays2019 · 09/11/2019 00:11

My DD volunteered at brownies. She loved it and carried on for over a year up to her GCSEs.

strawbebbies · 09/11/2019 00:28

Not my kids but my siblings and I (all early to mid 20s now) for our DoE and around that age did

  • Teaching computer skills to the elderly
  • Volunteering with a local youth group
  • Helping first year pupils at school (as 6th year buddies, classroom assistants and after school clubs)
  • Charity shops
  • Helping with rainbows and brownies
  • helping at local nature reserve (digging drainage ditches, maintaining meadow spaces, picking up litter)
  • Helping at council run kids sport classes
  • Helping at local community food co op and helping raise awareness of it by creating and handing out fliers
jokerreturns · 09/11/2019 00:31

Litter picking - local parish office provided bin bags etc

Sleepysquirrelin · 09/11/2019 07:50

Visiting a residential home for adults with learning disabilities. Chatting to them and befriending them.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 09/11/2019 07:53

Local primary after school drama club and choir

Trewser · 09/11/2019 07:54

Did reading at our local primary school, absolutely loved it, they loved her, now she wants to be a teacher.

Dd3 is doing Missing Maps at school. If you can find a teacher to lead and assess it's great and easy if rather dull

Trewser · 09/11/2019 07:54

Did? dd1

BlouseAndSkirt · 09/11/2019 07:56

Worked in a charity shop every Sunday afternoon.
Lots are set up for DoE volunteers. He took his CV to all the charity shops in the High Rc.
The experience helped him then get summer jobs.

MrsJoshNavidi · 09/11/2019 07:57

Volunteered in the local library. Putting books on shelves, that kind of thing.

northerngirl2012 · 09/11/2019 07:59

DS did this in year 9 & was 13 when started but just waited until he was 14 to volunteer with cubs as a young leader . There’s no rush to complete, you can do the other parts then do volunteering from 14. Or look for shops, elderly neighbours etc.

bananacakerox · 09/11/2019 08:01

Helped at cubs
Helped at gymnastics club
