On going pregnancy after abortion

Hi ladies, this is a very sensitive subject to me so please no negativity. I’m here for some advice.

4 weeks ago today I had a medical abortion, at 6+6, I bled heavily for a week then I stopped for a couple of days then I started bleeding lightly. I then stopped for 3 days and now I am bleeding again but this time it’s come with a lower backache, almost like what I experience during my periods or my previous pregnancies!

I was advised like everyone to take a pregnancy test on the third week, that I did and it came back with a strong positive. I was then advised by the nurse from Marie Stopes to take another test on the fourth week, which is today. I took a test this morning and again it has come back with a strong positive.

I must mention that my pregnancy symptoms stopped the day after the treatment. So this to me is all seeming quite odd.

Could this be a rare ongoing pregnancy? or maybe this could just be leftover pregnancy tissue that is causing a positive result.

What are the chances? I have called the nurse and I am on a waiting list for an appointment which I’m hoping won’t be long! For the meantime I am bugging out!

This is the box. Low sensitivity. Because it can take a while for the hcg levels to return to normal.

Yes I cannot believe non of the nurses have told me about specific pregnancy tests!

I had assumed that at this point of time that any pregnancy test would do.
Although after hearing about the specific tests then that has taken me back.

This test says on the box 1000miu/ml. I'm sure the cheapo normal one I used was 20miu/ml. That's a HUGE difference!

Cheeseandpickle1 · 10/11/2019 14:25

RedRedWhining

That’s good to know.
I have been to A&E today with bad cramps that almost felt like contractions this morning. I couldn’t even move, I was also sweating, my back was drenched.
They have booked me in for a ultrasound tomorrow. The doctor didn’t really know what was going on, he gave me antibiotics because he thinks I may have a urine infection.
I’m not going to start the antibiotics until I know what my situation is. I don’t want to cause anymore damage if this is an ongoing pregnancy.
Touch wood all of my questions will be answered tomorrow.

Please please don't listen to the sensitivity thing.

It's been weeks since there termination and if all had been well all tests would be negative

There's a very very good reason why your nurse (any many others on here) do not mention the sensitivity of tests.

Because it makes no difference this many weeks past the procedure.

There may be a grain of truth in it 1-2 weeks post procedure in that a less sensitive test will show negative before a sensitive one.

But at this point it makes no difference.

Because all tests should be negative

Ok sure yes it probably is offered for earlier testing.
I’m hoping to have my mind put at ease tomorrow! I will keep you posted thank you!

Best of luck 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

I have had my ultrasound this afternoon, and unfortunately it was the worst outcome for me.
It is the dreaded “retaining product” Sad no sign of baby. I must say I do feel sad about this. Although I have a busy life with my two boys already, after a week of endless googling “ongoing pregnancies”, I somewhat got my hopes up to a second chance.
Thank you for all of your kind advice ladies.

Oh I'm.so sorry to hear that Cheese. What is the next step? Is it surgical?

I hope it gets resolved soon. Fwiw, I don't think it's recommended to carry on with pregnancy after a failed termination due to "abnormalities" .

Take care. Xx

Cheeseandpickle1 · 11/11/2019 13:48

It wasn’t meant to be unfortunately. The worst part is I know my husband will feel a sense of relief and it will be only myself with these emotions!
I’m waiting for the doctor to tell me my next step now. It’s either to take the treatment again, antibiotics or a surgical treatment. I’m praying it can be dealt with by a course of antibiotics as I don’t want to do this again. X

Try to remember though, your hormones are all over the place. It's totally normal to have a whole variety of feelings about he situation. Even if it had been as straight forward as it could be.

Cheeseandpickle1 · 11/11/2019 15:40

Yes I do feel very hormonal/ emotional. I spoke with another nurse, they’d like me to wait 3 weeks and then to take another pregnancy test. She is hoping it passes by itself without the need for anymore treatment. If it doesn’t then I’ll have to go down another route to remove all thats left behind.

OP posts:
Solihooley · 11/11/2019 16:24

Oh sorry to hear that op. Personally I’m surprised they would leave it another 3 weeks. I think I’d rather just have the d&c and get it over with.

Crunchymum · 11/11/2019 16:30

Sorry to hear your news OP.

I do agree with PP though and I don't think the wait and see approach is ideal (although I completely understand why you wouldn't want any procedures)

Best of luck to you.

Cheeseandpickle1 · 11/11/2019 16:34

I just think this whole process is outrageous. I had to chase up the hospital countless times this morning in order to even get the appointment today.
Now having to wait three weeks is just dragging this nightmare out!

raspberrymolakoff · 11/11/2019 16:57

If your feverish symptoms continue you could have an infection caused by the refined products. This happened to me after a m/c and to my daughter after a chemical termination and we both needed a D&C under GA as well as antibiotics to sort us out. Don't ignore feverish symptoms as you don't want to end up with sepsis or being very unwell. Sorry you're going through this.

Confusion77 · 11/11/2019 17:33

Oh god OP. No, I wouldn't accept a 3 week wait. Tbh, I was pretty horrified by how bloody hard it was to arrange a medical termination. Logistically I mean. One half day clinic a week where I live which was close 2 our of 3 weeks. It took 5 weeks for me to be seen. Thank God I booked so early. Still it was 5 weeks of the most hideous sickness.

So sadly, what's happening in your case doesn't surprise me.

Cheeseandpickle1 · 11/11/2019 18:38

Oh wow sorry you went through that!
I will take care of myself and make sure I look out for symptoms.

VisionQuest · 11/11/2019 18:44

Hi OP - just wanted to share my experience. I had a medical termination which resulted in retained products.

I ended up hemorrhaging 4 weeks after. I had a D&C in the end after taking a second set of pills which still didn't get rid of the rationed products.

If you feel ill, lightheaded or start bleeding heavily go straight to A&E. I think it's awful that they're just leaving you to 'see what happens' for 3 bloody weeks!

VisionQuest

Whats a D&C?
That sounds awful!
I cannot believe they’re making me wait either. I was at A&E on Sunday with severe cramps and the doctor gave me a set of antibiotics to take incase it was a UTI.
Even Marie stopes have been useless they have given me an appointment that’s in over a weeks time!

I keep trying to tell myself this too. My husband works abroad and I have 3 children at home to take care of by myself. Two of them being toddlers!
It just wasn’t the right time for us. I just don’t think we are made aware of the harsh reality of emotions that lay on us following an abortion.

OP posts:
Cheeseandpickle1 · 11/11/2019 19:21

And to be quite honest I don’t even know how they think it will “disappear by itself” if I have not been bleeding in the last few days!
I think I may visit my GP.
