On going pregnancy after abortion

Hi ladies, this is a very sensitive subject to me so please no negativity. I’m here for some advice.

4 weeks ago today I had a medical abortion, at 6+6, I bled heavily for a week then I stopped for a couple of days then I started bleeding lightly. I then stopped for 3 days and now I am bleeding again but this time it’s come with a lower backache, almost like what I experience during my periods or my previous pregnancies!

I was advised like everyone to take a pregnancy test on the third week, that I did and it came back with a strong positive. I was then advised by the nurse from Marie Stopes to take another test on the fourth week, which is today. I took a test this morning and again it has come back with a strong positive.

I must mention that my pregnancy symptoms stopped the day after the treatment. So this to me is all seeming quite odd.

Could this be a rare ongoing pregnancy? or maybe this could just be leftover pregnancy tissue that is causing a positive result.

What are the chances? I have called the nurse and I am on a waiting list for an appointment which I’m hoping won’t be long! For the meantime I am bugging out!

I have no knowledge to offer but I wanted to say I’m so sorry you are going through this 💐

Cheeseandpickle1 · 08/11/2019 22:14

neverornow

I’m sorry for your loss. Flowers
I had wondered if maybe it’s just picking up low levels. Although the nurse said that the line should be very faint if thats the situation. I will wait and see what happens. Like you said, maybe week 5 will tell me something different! Brew

Thank you for sharing your story.
Also sorry that you had to experience that!

I was heavy at first then it settled down, it’s been up and down since but I wouldn’t say it’s been too heavy, definitely not soaking through pads. Although I have had to wear night pads for these freak bleeds.
I will bare that in mind, If heavily bleeding occurs, thanks again!

Someone else said this above, regarding the specific, special pregnancy test.
The nurse had not advised me this, which is ridiculous. She should of told me where I could get one of these tests from. As I did use a standard test.
So maybe that’s the case then, that the test I used was too sensitive for this week.
Thank you for that.

Sorry I can't help.
But I really hope everything is OK and this is just a false panic. Good luck OP Sad

Hi Op,

I had a MMC day before my 12 week scan.

I had medical management twice and was scanned to see what not all the pregnancy had gone. As I was still bleeding. I then had the surgical option and bleed for 4 weeks but the test was negative after 3 weeks. I was terrified as Iv never been to hospital but I truly wish I had gone straight for that option in the first place.
Medical management doesn't work for everyone which was explained to me and I am one of them people.

Hope you manage to get things sorted. X

Wow that is scary, what a negative experience you endured. I’m sorry to hear this.
Thanks for sharing with me, I hope to have my questioned answered soon!

I'd be very concerned about retained products and you should get scanned ASAP

DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou · 09/11/2019 08:10

Please don't listen to the guff about sensitive tests.

If the pregnancy had cleared then ALL TESTS would be negative.

And please don't wait another week.

Huggybear16 · 09/11/2019 08:43

Don't worry about any specific tests - that isn't standard advice and doesn't apply across the board.

It's likely to be caused by "retained products of conception" and why the tests are still detecting HCG. This needs to be dealt with by medical professionals, so please do not delay seeking further help because you have read that others were given different tests.

Once they (medical professionals) know what they're dealing with, it can be dealt with pretty quickly and you can begin to move past this.

Good luck OP, what a stressful situation this is for you.

Funnybunnyfluff · 09/11/2019 09:05

@Cheeseandpickle1

I think because medical management doesn't work for everyone it caused me a lot of stress. Surgical albeit not the route I wanted was physically pain free and done.
Id advise anyone facing surgical to make sure they use a camera also.

Medical can be more stressful and painful and drawn out.

This is only my experience.

Thinking of you op xx

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou

Ok that’s good to know. Surely a test is a test right? I’m going to chase them up again today!

Huggybear16

Thanks for you advice I’m going to call up Marie stopes again today and if they’re still acting slow I’ll call bpas.

I’ve been on netmums all night and a particular thread includes so many women that have had ongoing pregnancies post abortion. Especially medical abortions. It seems more common than we think.

I’m going to try and get this dealt with today.

@DontBiteTheBoobThatFeedsYou
Thanks for your advice.
Why do you suggest using a camera? X

OP posts:
Cheeseandpickle1 · 09/11/2019 09:39

Bloody useless, I’ve called Marie Stopes, nurse said “we wouldn’t have you on high risk and just ignore you, you won’t get a phonecall as the clinic doesn’t work on weekends, you’ll hear on Monday, and if you don’t hear from them, chase them back up”.
I’ve called my local hospital and they need a referral from my gp for an ultrasound appointment. My gp aren’t even open on the weekend.
I’ve even looked into Bpas and no clinics surrounding are even open on the weekend!

This is beyond stressful, having to sit around and just wait to find out. Sad

OP posts:
GoldLeafTree · 09/11/2019 09:44

Could you ring your nearest EPU?

Cheeseandpickle1 · 09/11/2019 10:24

GoldLeafTree

I called the EUP at my local hospital and that’s when she said the ultrasound clinic isn’t open on the weekends. I find this insane. What if there was an emergency. I don’t think they want to know because I have not got a go referral!

OP posts:
Cheeseandpickle1 · 09/11/2019 10:39

I’ve even just spoken with another EPU and the nurse has said the exact same thing. That if I’m not heavily bleeding and in pain, only receiving a positive test then I must wait till i hear from Marie Stopes or contact my gp.
It’s so stressful but I suppose I just have to try and take my mind off things until next week. Which is much easier said than done!
Thank you ladies for your kind words and great advice.
I will keep you all updated. Brew

Sahej · 09/11/2019 23:40

When an abortion doesn't work they will advise against keeping the pregnancy due to abnormalities.
If you call the abortion clinic they will give you a scan alot sooner than hospital

Cheeseandpickle1 · 10/11/2019 08:37

Sahej
Yes I have heard they are fully against you keeping the baby.
Although there is a long thread on Netmums on so many women who have had ongoing pregnancies who have had healthy pregnancies and babies.
Hopefully I get a scan early next week to rule out certain possibilities.

OP posts:
Confusion77 · 10/11/2019 09:04

@Cheeseandpickle1 I hope you get an answer soon. Just to add though, the info about specific tests isn't "guff" or hearsay. The bpas midwife made a specific point about using the test she gave, I said I didn't need it as I have one left at hone and she told me not to use that after 2 weeks, and to use the one she gave. The one she gave had information on the box about being specifically for post termination use, and medical management of miscarriage. It also said in large print, something like "this is not a standard pregnancy test".

I'm really surprised that this isn't the same across the board to be honest!

Funnybunnyfluff · 10/11/2019 10:23

That's interesting @Confusion77
I was told you use a normal test.

RedRedWhining · 10/11/2019 10:26

I have previously worked in a termination clinic in a hospital and the pregnancy tests they sent home with patients were just standard pregnancy tests used in every single department in the hospital. I have sat in on literally hundreds of termination clinics and never has it been advised not to use standard pregnancy tests.

Really hoping it all gets sorted for you OP. Thinking of you Flowers

EwwwwGrossWTF · 10/11/2019 11:47

It's absolute fact that if the pregnancy had cleared, all tests would be negative regardless of the sensitivity.

So the difference of sensitivity is, in this situation, guff a moot point.
